Game Recap for Show #6283, 2012-01-04

Dave Leach game 5.

CONTESTANTS
Jaldhar Vyas, a software developer and Hindu priest from Jersey City, New Jersey
Nicholas Campiz, a graduate student in geography from Gainesville, Florida (whose 1-day cash winnings total $12,200)
Dave Leach, a software analyst from Atlanta, Georgia (whose 4-day cash winnings total $60,884)

OPENING REMARKS
Alex: Thank you, Johnny. Well, it didn't take us long. We're in the first week of the new year, and we have our first co-champions. We gave away $24,400 yesterday to these 2 players--Nicholas and Dave. Does that mean that Jaldhar is a bit at a disadvantage against these two experienced ones? It all depends on the categories, doesn't it? So good luck, and let's take a look at the categories for this first round of play today. They are...

JEOPARDY! ROUND CATEGORIES
OLD KING COAL (5/5) (Alex: [Laughs] I love the spelling on that one.)
SCRIPT DOCTORS (3/5)
NAMETH THE BIBLE BOOK (5/5, including 1 correct Daily Double)
ODDITIES (4/5)
THE MAIN ALCOHOLIC INGREDIENT (3/5)
BEASTLY EXPRESSIONS (5/5)

THE RIGHTS & THE WRONGS
Dave: 15 R (including 2 rebounds), 0 W
Jaldhar: 9 R (including 1 DD), 3 W
Nicholas: 2 R, 0 W

Clues revealed: 30
Triple Stumpers: 5
Jeopardy! Round Potential Lach Trash: $4,600

SCORES AT THE FIRST BREAK
Dave: $3,400
Jaldhar: $2,200
Nicholas: $1,800

CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: There are 15 generations of Hindu priests in Jaldhar Vyas' family...

Jaldhar: Yes, indeed.

Alex: So it would seem logical to talk about that. However, I'm not going to do that. I want to talk about something that relates more personally to me. Tell us about that.

Jaldhar: Yes. I like to visualize my goals. And, uh, when I was 13 in 1984, I had just arrived in this country and noticed the new game show with the dashing Canadian host, and I decided that I wanted to be like you. Uh, still a work in progress, but my whole life, you've been my mustache role model. [Laughter] So it was a sad day--September 18, 2001. A day that will live in infamy.

Alex: A date that will live in infamy--the day I shaved my mustache.

Jaldhar: Mm-hmm.

Alex: Okay.

[J! Archive note: Alex actually shaved his mustach on the show aired September 21, 2001.]

Alex: Nicholas Campiz, good news for you--we--our researchers, during the commercial break, checked up on "a bird of a different color", and we found enough mentions of that to award you with a correct response. So you're picking up $1,600. Your total is now at $1,800. Now I want to hear about your visit to Mongolia. It's a place I've never been, and I would love to go there. And how was it for you? You didn't speak the language, obviously.

Nicholas: No. Uh, there was a--there was a Peace Corps volunteer out there who showed me around, but it was about negative 40 degrees.

Alex: Were you living in a yurt?

Nicholas: No. Uh, it was a nice Communist flat--

[Laughter]

Nicholas: --that we lived in.

Alex: There are no nice Communist flats. I've been there before the fall.

Alex: Dave Leach is our champion. Speaking of traveling...

Dave: Mm.

Alex: You want to go to Europe? Have you been?

Dave: I've never been, and my girlfriend Leslie is an avid traveler. She's been trying to figure out a way to get me over there all this time.

Alex: Where, in particular?

Dave: Well, in particular, she has family in former East Germany. And, uh, they came to visit us in Atlanta last year. We'd love to return the favor.

Alex: What city?

Dave: It's a little town called Bautzen, near Dresden.

Alex: Beltzen?

Dave: Bautzen.

Alex: Oh, Bautzen.

Dave: They're known for their mustard.

[Laughs]

Alex: Oh, okay. All right. Bring some back for us.

Dave: You got it.

JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Jaldhar found the Daily Double on the 29th clue. Dave had $6,200, Nicholas had $1,800, and Jaldhar was at $2,600. Jaldhar made it a True Daily Double, wagering $2,600.

NAMETH THE BIBLE BOOK $800: "They bemoaned him, and comforted him over all the evil that the Lord had brought upon him"
(Jaldhar: I'm gonna regret this, but let's make it a True Daily Double.)
(Alex: Why will you regret it?)
(Jaldhar: I--because I have no idea what the category is about.)
(Alex: Well, then, I'll read the clue for you and then you'll have some idea.)

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
THE MAIN ALCOHOLIC INGREDIENT $800: ...In a Gauguin

THE MAIN ALCOHOLIC INGREDIENT $1000: ...In a Rob Roy; vermouth's along for the ride, too

ODDITIES $1000: From 2007 to 2011 the president, V.P. & prime minister all had the same family name in this country of Indochina
(Alex: The name was Nguyen ["WIN"], or Nguyen ["NOO-yen"], and the country was [*].)

SCRIPT DOCTORS $1000: 2005 & 2007: Julian McMahon as this comic book doctor who was struck by cosmic waves
(Jaldhar: Who is Doctor Strange?)

SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Dave: $7,200
Jaldhar: $5,200
Nicholas: $1,800

That happens every once in a while. Archiving the games is a time-consuming activity, so there are occasional lulls in the stream of updates, especially around the holiday season.

By the way, Congratulations to Dave Leach on becoming a five-time winner! I look forward to seeing you play in the Tournament of Champions! :-)

I said "Johnny Got Your Gun"; I feel I should get partial credit for knowing it was the Trumbo book that they wanted.

Congrats on win #5, Dave!

I still wonder if Alex realized why you were laughing at the "leech" clue.

I was as clueless as the three contestants, SWAGging For Whom the Bell Tolls. I've never heard of either the author or the book, so I'm pretty much pegging this as my most difficult of the season.

Not a chance on FJ.
Fell into the same trap as the contestants on FJ. I actually did read the book of the correct response once upon a time, so forehead slap for me.

Congrats Dave! Outstanding performance.

Never heard of the book or the author on FJ! Bounced around a couple Hemingways just to say something in the era.

That was a rough first round for me; hoping DJ! is a little kinder. I had definitely never heard "bird of a different color", but I did Google it and see a few references. I imagine J!'s researchers undertake a more thorough inquiry, but glad to see Nicholas got credit.

Dalton Trumbo is far better known for his work as a screenwriter, which is how he would have landed in front of HUAC in the first place.

Congrats to Dave on the 5th win and likely ToC spot. I am looking for a rematch in the finals of the next ToC between Jason and Dave, kind of like Vik Vaz and Bill MacDonald in 2006!

After an an easy board last night, I got absolute destroyed by this one. But I am glad that Dave handled it masterfully!

I have never heard of the book (or movie) or the author that were the subjects of the FJ clue, and Literature is one of my best categories. I did a search for the author and the work in Gyaankosh, which is an archive of sets of quiz bowl questions that I have used to study, and there was only one hit. The tournament where it came up was an all Literature tournament, so it was probably a tough clue. Is the movie more famous? I doubt this one was as hard as Liederkranz but maybe it will poll similar to Damon Runyan? I knew it was wrong but I guessed A Farewell to Arms, just to have a guess. The category made me think of Hemingway.

Umm. Define "on time".

You know that archiving the Jeopardy! games is not a paying job, right?

14/30, 10/27.

Most amusing thing today was the Hindu priest taking a TDD on a Bible category, outright saying he didn't know what the category was about, and getting it right. (I got 4/5, clamming on I Kings. Also ran Beastly Expressions.)

I got Art Clokey, but was honestly expecting that to be a TS.

No clue on FJ! I notice only one other hit in the Archive for that title. Surprisingly, it was a mere $800 on a "regular" game, and a contestant got it.

One of the benefits of having once worked in a bookstore is knowing about books like Johnny Got His Gun. It was a standard summer reading assignment at one of the local school districts, which now seems remarkable in retrospect.

Incidentally, Morris Dickstein's book Dancing in the Dark is an excellent primer of 1930s culture, though even having read it the only novel I could precall was The Grapes of Wrath.

I forgot to ask: is "mad as a wet hen" a common phrase? The rest of that category was a breeze, but that one had me staring at the screen.
