OPENING REMARKS
Alex: Thank you, Johnny, and welcome, ladies and gentlemen. You know, it never ceases to amaze me how important Final Jeopardy! is in resolving our matches. Because the wager is important, as we discovered yesterday with Andrew winning the game even though he didn't come up with the correct response, winning it by just $1. What's going to happen today with Liz and Todd? Well, let's start finding out. Good luck. Here we go. Let's take a look at the categories, shall we?...

CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: Liz Rapelye is from New Jersey, and this young lady likes to collect tall, tacky, pointy things from all around the world. Are we talking about slim, rude guys?

Liz: No, I'm talking about little famous monuments, you know, that they sell in gift shops. My favorite is the Statue of Liberty with a little snow globe in the middle--

Alex: Uh-huh.

Liz: --which is great, and my Washington Monument that is also a thermometer.

Alex: Oh, so we're talking about souvenir stuff from the United States. What about abroad?

Liz: I have the Eiffel Tower, and then I also have Edinburgh Castle from my trip to Scotland.

Alex: Okay, good for you.

Liz: It's not that tall, though.

Alex: All right, Todd Grabarsky is from L.A., but he once had a difficult job in New York. Whenever I travel to New York, I feel for these guys. You once did what?

Todd: I worked as a bike messenger.

Alex: That's scary.

[Todd chuckles.]

Alex: You have to deal with traffic, and sometimes you guys go the wrong way on one-way streets, and you don't always obey the laws, am I right?

Todd: Uh, I'll plead the fifth on that, Alex.

[Laughter]

Alex: How long did you do that?

Todd: A few months--I was in between jobs, I was biking everywhere, so I figured why not make some cash while doing it?

Alex: Yeah. I hope you didn't do it during the winter months.

[Todd laughs.]

Alex: Yeah? Okay.

Alex: Andrew Haringer is from Squamish, British Columbia; he's our champion. Whenever I hear the word squamish, I think of, "Hey, that must be a good place to go fishing." Am I right? What other outdoor activities are there?

Andrew: Yeah, sure. Lots of salmon--we've had record salmon runs the last couple of years. Uh, it's called Canada's outdoor recreation capital, so there's amazing rock climbing, uh, kitesurfing, mountain biking, hiking, all that stuff.

Alex: And you're into all of that?

Andrew: Well, not all of it--

Alex: A lot of them.

Andrew: --but a few of them, yeah.

Alex: You look like you're in shape, too.

JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Andrew found the Daily Double on the 22nd clue. Andrew had $4,800, Todd had $1,400, and Liz had a deficit with -$3,000. Andrew made it a True Daily Double, wagering $4,800.

CHARLIE $1000: In the 1850s this American inventor wrote "Gum-elastic and Its Varieties"
(Alex: And we have a minute to go.)

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
THE NATO PHONETIC ALPHABET $800: U:
As an adjective, it means "unvarying"
(Liz: What is unwielding?)

THE NATO PHONETIC ALPHABET $1000: N:

Four-fifths for first place.
Todd: Wager $12,801 to cover Andrew.

LOL - JUST LOL

LOL @ AT for not noticing that Charlie Oscar Whiskey Sierra spelled COWS

LOL @ Andrew for his answer of Jean Chretien

LOL @ Liz for thinking the European Central Bank has its headquarters in a country that isn't part of the EU and doesn't use the Euro

I only got today's final because of yesterday's LL match.

Lach Trash: uniform, Truth or Consequences, heifer.

NHO: Sierra Madre, Birdman.

Derp moment du jour: "Oh, checkpoint Charlie was on that WALL that ran through BERLIN and formerly divided Germany. What was that WALL called again though?"

I thought "oak" was incredibly tough for $200 in Whiskey. (Did anyone else know that?) Jack Daniels was by far the easiest in that category and should've been $200 IMO.

I should've known Monongahela = PA because of "Gonna Take a Lot of River" by the Oak Ridge Boys, but it temporarily evaporated from my mind.

NHO any of the titles in Entertainment Adverbs.

I thought The Old Man and the Sea was undervalued at $400.

WLT Carnegie or Ireland at $400?

No guess on FJ! NHO the Main River so "Mainhattan" was meaningless to me. Frankfurt is popular for Americans?!?

This was a well-played game. Congratulations, Andrew, on another win. I had 38 correct responses including a bunch of triple stumpers: Uniform, November, Jessica Lange, Argentina, Truth Or Consequences, Tagus, heifer, Hereford, Jacques Chirac, and Israel. Didn't get FJ.

Alex meant that Frankfurt is a key airport hub for Americans flying to Europe. My recollection is that it is called the Frankfurt-Main airport.

I didn't know where the ECB was based, but the Main part of the clue gave it to me.

That was the easiest category on the entire board for me.

Alex butchered the pronounciation of Hereford. I've heard it as three syllables all my life.

I fell for the Faye Dunaway trap. Also guessed Amsterdam for FJ.

I have heard the English county with three syllables (I am singing a tune from My Fair Lady in my brain right now), but the cattle breed has always been two - like herferd - in my experience. If that's how he pronounced it, it wasn't butchered at all.

That was one heck of an FJ bet by the champ. Glad it worked out for him.

Never knew Frankfurt had the nickname "Mainhatten." Well, now I do. :-)

Better than t/3 of tonight's contestants, I knew that the clue was referring to the Main R. and some city in Germany. But I didn't know which city, sadly, so put down Dusseldorf. Sigh. Thus ends a run of 15 correct FJs in a row, which, since it included the Celebrity week, should probably only count for 10 in a row.

Wasn't certain, but guessed oak and was pleasantly surprised. I was also expecting a possible overturn on the other one at the interview break; the whiskey is Jack Daniel's, but the clue asked for the man, named Jack Daniel.

My LT: uniform, November, Hereford, T or C, heifer, and Argentina. On the last of those I would have been as clueless as the contestants, but for knowing that "General Belgrano" was the Argentine carrier cruiser sunk by the British in the Falklands War.

FJ was basically an instaget; I was almost certain the ECB was based there, but also remembered the city's official name is Frankfurt am Main, distinguishing it from another, far smaller Frankfurt on the German-Polish border.

34 right.

NATO (1), Charlie (2), Oscar (4), Whiskey (3), Sierra (4), Cows (0)
Sleepy (4), CUR (1), French (5), Adv (4), Lit (1), Dan (5)

Lach Trash: "Argentina", "Truth or Consequences", "Jacques Chirac", "USA", "Israel"

I mainly focused on bank and thought of Zurich right away. If I said a German city, it more likely would have been Berlin instead of Frankfurt. Good job by Liz to get out of the hole.

Jack Daniels should have been negged. Jasper Newton "Jack" Daniel.

Disappointed we didn't get the other two clues in NATO; that would have been an easy 5/5.

Another Amsterdam here. I think I should stop playing off the Clue of the Day; the pronunciation of "Mainhattan" might have made me think of the river and got me to the right city. Or maybe not.
Oh, what has science wrought? I sought only to turn a man into a metal-encased juggernaut of destruction powered by the unknown properties of a mysterious living crystal. How could this have all gone wrong?

Is Sierra Madre pluralized? An easy game & the champ was impressive. Lots of lach trash here too. I got the answer from the name of the Frankfurt airport as someone else noted above. Nice to see the heavily red contestant make a nice comeback & give herself a fighting chance in FJ!
