CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: Jerry Vinokurov's family immigrated to the United States from the Soviet Union some years ago. And I guess at the time you didn't speak English, but you learned by watching a television program.

Jerry: Correct. So MacGyver was a daily appointment at my house because my dad is an engineer and he was really into it. And so I watched it every night, and that was a show that helped me learn English.

Alex: You were a very young person to learn how important duct tape is.

[Laughter]

Jerry: Yes, yes. I have learned that lesson forever.

Alex: Oh, good.

Alex: Stephanie Hunt is a graduate student from New Jersey. I attended university in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

Stephanie: Yes.

Alex: Your family has an ancestral home that is a historic site there?

Stephanie: That's correct. My, uh, great-great-great-great whatever on my maternal grandmother's side, uh, were the first people to, um, uh, move to the Ottawa area. And so, uh, one of their homes is now, uh, a national historic site--the Billings estate. And so when I was a kid growing up in Ottawa, we'd go there a lot.

Alex: Good place to visit, isn't it?

Stephanie: Yes, a lot of fun.

Alex: Yes, indeed. I love that city.

Alex: Buzzy Cohen is our champion, ladies and gentlemen. And you once met Brian Wilson and had an interesting conversation with him, I understand.

Buzzy: I did. I was hearing some music that he had made before it was released, and they were playing it for us. And in the middle of playing it, he just turns to me and goes, "What are you gonna do to summon the spiritual force to get this record on the radio?" And that's not what I do.

[Laughter]

Buzzy: I don't put records on the radio. So I just looked around nervously for somebody to save me, which, eventually, they did.

Alex: Good. Now I--I just mentioned, ladies and gentlemen, that he had an interesting conversation with Brian Wilson. I daresay that every conversation with Brian Wilson was an interesting one.

[Laughter]

FINAL JEOPARDY! CATEGORY
LITERARY QUOTES

VENUSIAN MONOLOGUES/MARTIAN CHRONICLES
Crush for first place.
Jerry: Wager $2,401 to cover Buzzy, but no more than $6,399 so as not to fall behind Stephanie's doubled score.
Buzzy: You have the hope of surpassing Jerry if you come up with the correct response. Bet at least $7,001 to force Jerry to wager to win while also protecting your position from being usurped by Stephanie.
Stephanie: Unfortunately, your score is less than the difference between the scores of the first and second place players, so unless they both blunder, you're competing for second place and have no hopes of first. Wager as much as you desire, but remember, you'll have better chances of advancing to second place if you have a larger sum left over on a Triple Stumper.

FINAL JEOPARDY! CLUE
More than once this 1897 novel quotes from Deuteronomy, "The blood is the life"

FINAL SCORES
Stephanie: $5,000 + $4,995 = $9,995 (What is Dracula?) (3rd place)
Buzzy: $9,400 + $7,001 = $16,401 (What is Dracula?) (33602-day champion: $16,401)
Jerry: $16,400 - $2,401 = $13,999 (What is Germinal?) (2nd place)
(Alex: I wonder if it might've helped you if I had said... [Imitating Count Dracula] "The blood is the life.")

Shall we agree not to build contestants up based on their other trivia achievements before their episodes air?

Shall we also agree that Alex using a pseudo-Russian accent for a clue about Turkey is a new low?

After the hype over him in yesterday's thread, I was rooting against him. Nothing personal and I apologize if he is reading this, but I just thought the hyperbole over him was way over-the-top. (My rooting against him was mainly to make his fan club look bad). I think it is silly when people say someone is going on a long run after one big victory. Predicting someone will run over everybody like Matt Jackson before they play a game is just nuts.

He did have the highest Coryat, but forgetting the rules of the category in the first round cost him a lock. If Buzzy had gotten the Warren DD, he has the lead going into FJ. I did like him going all in on it. I was surprised he missed FJ, but sometimes it just doesn't come to you. When I saw him scribbling towards the end and his body language after the music stopped (and Alex's accent), I knew he was in trouble.
Shall we also agree that Alex using a pseudo-Russian accent for a clue about Turkey is a new low?
At least he didn't do his Dracula voice when reading the FJ answer. I thought I heard a trace of it, as if he was trying to stop himself from doing it.

Congrats to Buzzy on breaking the superchamp conqueror curse.

Ironically, Jerry's quiz bowl prowess is probably what did him in today. Quiz bowl doesn't have categories that require a specific kind of response like "of the" movies; it doesn't try to get cute with puns or other TOMs, like referring to something written by Mindy Kaling and a "project" instead of a book; and quiz bowl answers are things like obscure books by Zola instead of something that everybody knows about. Although both Jeopardy and quiz bowl involve clues and responses, each one require a somewhat different kind of thinking to get to the right answer. Matt Jackson managed to have great success at both formats, but Jerry didn't seem to have the sort of "lateral thinking" that Jeopardy requires.

I learned the importance of duct tape not from MacGyver, but from the Red Green Show.

Uh, the middle girl, uh, had uh, a bad, uh, case of "uh", uh, in her, uh, interview, uh.

====

Lach Trash: Revere, Nebraska, George Carlin

Woo, another Guardians of the Galaxy clue. My only get in the category too.

"Dombey and Son"?!?

NHO contract or auction bridge, or silk screen.

WLT Bill Maher at $400?

...Okay, if I'm insta-getting THIS many FJ!s, then they MIGHT be a little too easy. I never thought I would complain about FJ! being too easy...

Lots of guessing in this game. You could tell Jerry really wanted to win.

I swept the WWII category and the movie category.

FJ was pretty instaget.

I never thought I'd see three whiffs at a Nebraska clue when spotted Platte.

Wow. I thought for sure Buzzy was a goner, both when he was getting crushed in DJ and when I saw that slam dunk of a FJ clue. Instaget before Alex finished reading, and yeah I was waiting for the accent.

I thought there were some very weird categories tonight that might have hurt our QB star.

Have seen too many episodes of True Blood to miss this FJ, but I would have thought Dracula was written 20-30 years earlier.

Really? Animal House?!? It's not like Richard Dreyfuss was wearing a toga in the scene.

I do feel for Jerry. He was visibly crushed at falling short of the dream.

Had no idea who Jerry was... But based on yesterday's hype, was expecting great things. I think those kind of expectations hurt Jerry... He was visibly upset throughout the game.
Congrats to buzzy.. Little weird categories. J round felt harder than DJ..that Dickens category was too cute.

I thought it was earlier, too, but went with Dracula just the same. I think I was mentally tying it into the Mary Shelley, Lord Byron horror story challenge.

Alex busted out a number of unfortunate voices tonight. Ugh.

Ouch ouch ouch. How many times have we seen that, though? I was going to say something yesterday, but didn't want to jinx him, especially since he is a fellow alum and works at my other alma mater. That did look like a total bummer for him.

The clue writing was lazy/unconventional in this episode. Which is exactly why everyone who is serious about getting on the show needs to watch and keep score for a lot of episodes, no matter how great they are at quiz bowl. Sometimes the writers throw ridiculous curveballs like... finding words in Dickens titles.
Some of the triple stumpers were painful. Who was President in the 1970's? It's a $400 clue. There are three choices. Pick one! Oh wait, you're also spotted the current Secretary of Defense.
Where is the Platte River? That should've been a Pavlov for "Nebraska."
That FJ belonged in the Teen Tournament.
Hoping for a third lap

Since they were looking for the book title and not the character, I take it "Count Dracula" would not have been acceptable.

He didn't seem to be listening very well. Not only did he forget the "of the" category but he kept giving the full Dickens titles after it was clear that only the word was required. And I know this is small, but he mispronounced Broad after Alex correctly pronounced it with a long o...And Tom Thumb instead of Gulliver?
I wouldn't have cared about any of this if he hadn't been built up here yesterday...
