I didn't think of the countries that broke up specifically, but just went to Eastern Europe. My thought process was "Bulgaria/Belarus, no. Slovakia/Slovenia, yes. Oh yeah, they were part of previous countries." The geography quizzes certainly help. When I do the Sporcle European Countries quiz, the countries are linked in my head. Ialways go "Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Montenengro..."xxaaaxx wrote:"Part of other countries til the '90s"? Hmm...Yugoslavia and Czecho.....Slovakia -> Slovenia, done. Doesn't hurt that I've been doing a ton of geography quizzes lately.

I spent so much of Think Music trying to parse the question and figure out what they were looking for, that I didn't have much time to answer. I got as far as Czech, and got no further.

I kept trying to figure out how Chechnya and the Czech Republic started with the same 4 letters. Czechnya? Once headed down the wrong dusty trail, I never recovered.

Another Pavlovian (or should be) connection. Thomas Hart Benton = Missouri.twelvefootboy wrote:I'm wondering how many Jboarders got the Jeff City clue. I'm native Missourian or I'd never known it. Thanks! Have you ever done the Monday night trivia at St Stephens?IronNeck wrote:Haha, best of retro-luck! Since she mentioned being 5 feet even, I imagine she had to stand on blocks to be roughly eye-level with Rob and and Ernie?
Also, I take comfort in knowing that if I'm ever on the show I will force someone to stand on the blocks, as I'm 6' 5".
Alison and I were the holdovers from the first day of taping, so it was cool to see her win. I forgot she had come from that far behind to win. She actually had a two-month old at home, but as a teacher on maternity leave she had to use the time off when she had it, and it looks like it paid off for her!

Even better! They have hydraulic lifts behind each podium to keep everyone relatively level with each other.IronNeck wrote:Since she mentioned being 5 feet even, I imagine she had to stand on blocks to be roughly eye-level with Rob and and Ernie?

And they warn you against immediately going to shake eachother's hands after the game lest you forget that you or they are on a lift and run the risk of falling or tripping.mcsheffrey wrote:Even better! I have a new perspective on Mr. Benton. I thought he was just a graffiti artist hyped up to be important by our local Chambers of Commerce. We really don't have much claim to fame here in the Sho-Me state. F5 tornadoes are only sexy for a few minutes. Thanks to the many Jboarders for 'splaining to me that Benton was a real thing. It ain't no Bayeux Tapestry IMHO, but art is like porn - you know it when you see it. Or not.earendel wrote:I got it because of the association between Benton and Missouri. I've been a Jeopardy! fan for many years, but just recently found this forum. As everyone knows, Alex is fastidious about correct pronunciation, whether in English or a foreign language. Hence my surprise last night when he incorrectly used the Spanish rather than the Portuguese pronunciation of 'Jose' in this question:
"Abbreviated FAO, this UN agency headed by Jose da Silva of Brazil leads the world's efforts to defeat hunger."

Take a peek around the other threads but prepare to lose a few hours of your life. And go to the one about how you got your screen name and do some 'splaining. The mods here are great and I'll continue to suck up until they grant me my preferred byline (FIGLAM)!

I've heard about the risers, and was hoping to experience them myself, but being just a tad shorter than Iron Neck I fear only if I"m playing against Kareem will that happen.IronNeck wrote:Haha, best of retro-luck! (late to the party, but catching up!)
The last time I heard the name "Abelard" was the first time I heard the name "Abelard": FAMOUS PAIRS $1600
Musical instruments just might be my worst Jeopardy! category. Zither? not in a million years.
I love horror movies, so shout out for The Conjuring 2, which features a zoetrope (a new word for me - incidentally, I think I need to purchase a real life dictionary and stop relying on the Internet. Which edition would people recommend?)
Lights, camera, action: how does private chamber = camera, pray tell
Fountain pen same as quill? judges? That's an odd piece of SCOTUS trivia

Pretty sure they mean quill as in a bird feather dipped into ink for writing so, no, fountain pen is not the same.morbeedo wrote:Fountain pen same as quill? judges? That's an odd piece of SCOTUS trivia

"Chamber" is the literal meaning of camera (still used in the expression in camera). I thought that was a pretty good get for the contestant, the clue evaded me entirely.morbeedo wrote:

Heh, I had the exact same neg as you. I've often received fountain pens as gifts or souvenirs, so my mouth said it before my mind realized "quills" would be more logical.morbeedo wrote: Fountain pen same as quill? judges? That's an odd piece of SCOTUS trivia
