Jeffrey Schwarz, a private investor from New York, New York (whose 3-day cash winnings total $62,300)
OPENING REMARKS
Alex: Okay, thank you, Johnny. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen. Good to have you with us. Some days, it's just as important to be lucky as it is to know the correct response, and that was the situation on yesterday's program. All three players missed Final Jeopardy!, but Jeffrey, our returning champion, wagered cautiously and wound up with the most money at the end. So he's playing today against Ian and Dan. I'll wish all three of you good luck. Pick up your signaling devices and here we go into the Jeopardy! Round. Let's take a look at the categories now.

CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS
Alex: Welcome back. Over the years, in our attempts to make Jeopardy! even more exciting, we have tried different things. Different tournaments, a tournament with a computer. Dan Hess, you're from Los Angeles, and I understand that in college, you came up with a way to make Jeopardy! more exciting also.
Dan: Yeah, it's a game called Drinking Jeopardy!.
Alex: Hello.
Dan: Yeah, I think you'd like it. Basically, my friends and I, we DVRed, we recorded several episodes' worth, we had our favorite adult beverage. And basically you shout out the answer like at home, but if you get it right first, your fellow players have to take a sip. If you get it wrong, you take a sip.
Alex: How many times did your opponents wind up on the floor?
Dan: I'd like to think more often than I did.
Alex: Okay, good.
Alex: Ian Booth is from Washington, D.C. Decided to work with international issues when something bad happened to you.
Ian: When I got tear-gassed in Peru.
Alex: What were the circumstances?
Ian: Well, I was down there for study abroad in Lima. I was just trying to find some Chinese food, which was normally easy enough. I was having some trouble and asked a police officer, who thought he'd have some fun with me, gave me directions that led me to a riot that was just wrapping up, and--because of the tear gas, and I walked into a cloud of that. And I thought, "Well, this is just the kind of thing that doesn't happen to me often back home, and it's interesting." And I got my Chinese food.
Alex: Good for you.
Alex: Jeffrey Schwarz is our champion, ladies and gentlemen. You know, you've been with us a few days now, and I keep looking at you and I say, "Gee, he looks familiar." Do you ever get mistaken for Will Ferrell?
Jeffrey: Too many times I have been.
Alex: Really?
Jeffrey: I have been. People have come up to me and said, "Are you Will Ferrell?" And--which, you know, I don't nearly have the talent or the good looks of him, but interestingly, last month, I was in New Zealand with my family, and someone came up to me and said, "You look like an actor." And I was about to say, "Will Ferrell," and he said, "Brad Pitt." I said, "I'm coming back to this place."
Alex: Okay.
JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Dan found the Daily Double on the 24th clue. Jeffrey had $6,800, Ian had $800, and Dan was at $2,200. Dan wagered $2,000.
CELEBRATIONS OF THE MONTH $800: National Magic Day, on the anniversary of Harry Houdini's death
(Alex: [*]. Think of Halloween.)
TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
THAT RAISES A RED FLAG $600: The five red stars on this region's flag refer to China's flag
(Ian: What is Taiwan?)
CELEBRATIONS OF THE MONTH $600: Canada Day
(Alex: Less than a minute now.)
SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Jeffrey: $6,800
Dan: $4,200
Ian: $2,400

Jeffrey: $11,600
Dan: $9,000
FINAL JEOPARDY! CATEGORY
PRESIDENTS: BORN & DIED
VENUSIAN MONOLOGUES/MARTIAN CHRONICLES
Three-quarters for first place. Stratton's Dilemma.
Ian: Wager $8,601 to cover Jeffrey.
Jeffrey: You ought to wager to cover Dan, but since you cannot win on a Triple Stumper if you do so, you should choose between wagering $0 and maximizing your winnings with a wager of all $11,600. You are in Stratton's Dilemma, calling for a wager of more than $6,400 (to shut out Dan) or less than $5,600 (risking the possibility of being passed from behind by Dan). Go with the smaller bet if you believe a Triple Stumper is more likely than a singleton miss by Ian.
Dan: Consider risking between $2,601 and $3,000. This will top a $0 wager by Jeffrey while still beating Ian on the Triple Stumper (should Ian wager to cover Jeffrey's doubled score).
FINAL JEOPARDY! CLUE
Born the farthest west in the continental U.S. of any president, he would later die farthest from his birthplace
FINAL SCORES
Dan: $9,000 + $4,000 = $13,000 (Who is Richard Nixon) (2nd place: $2,000)
Jeffrey: $11,600 - $6,500 = $5,100 (Who was Herbert Hoover) (3rd place: $1,000)
Ian: $14,600 + $8,601 = $23,201 (Who is Nixon?) (New champion: $23,201)

Re: Friday, June 1, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]
Ian was a little slow getting the hang of the game, but the learning curve was rising by the end. A game’s worth of experience should help on Monday for a smoother start.
The FJ! category tricked me as I thought it was going to be Coolidge for being born on July 4th and some combination of the three who died on July 4th. Nope, more recent history than that and I agree with Alex there will be plenty of home solves. I knew the states and I knew the guy, so as for any week in regular play I’ll gladly take 80%.
8 weeks and 40 games to go this season.

I wasn’t sure here, but I knew Nixon was Yorba Linda. Didn’t know where he died, but that seemed good enough for a guess. 5/5 for the week!

There are only two presidents born west of TX and one of them is still alive. Kinda narrows it down.

Re: Friday, June 1, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]
I can't say that Jeff resembles Will Ferrell like Chad Smith does.
FJ seemed too obvious, but I could think of no other U.S. President who was born in a west coast state.

I spent the entirety of the Think music wondering if I had forgotten an Oregonian or something. Super-instaget FJ. My forehead is still sore from yesterday's smack after the FJ reveal, so I needed an easy one.

Got stuck on Reagan because of his pre-Presidential career, totally blanked on Nixon.

Nixon immediately came to mind but it seemed so easy that I spent all of the think music wondering what I might have missed.

He'd pretty much have to die in Hawaii or maybe the Marshall Islands to be closer.

Not a strong FJ category for me, but the presidents I associate with the far west US (i.e. California) the most are Reagan and Nixon. I knew Reagan died in California, so I went with Nixon and hoped for the best.

32 right.
Celebrations of the Month (3), I Like Turtles (1), The Third Man (4), Movie! (2), Red Flag (4), Es For You (4)
Show Biz Nicknames (3), Day & Night Bookstore (2), Musical Instrument (2), Spy Stuff (4), "P"laces (3), Herbs & Spices (0)
Lach Trash: Clara Bow
Instaget FJ because I remembered that Richard Nixon passed away in New York City.

Well, Nixon was from California... can't think of anyone else, let's go with that.
Not many people can say they've lost four times on Jeopardy!.

Like Jeffrey I said Hoover for FJ. I would have said Nixon, but I really thought he died near his home in Yorba Linda.

Re: Friday, June 1, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]
Nixon spent his last years in New Jersey, after a brief unhappy sojourn on the Upper East side of New York. A Sunday installment of the Spiderman comic strip at the time showed him living next door to the Kingpin. Later he (Nixon, that is) and Jackie K-O lay critically ill in the same hospital at the same time.
I'm smart and I want respect.
