Jackie’s chat with Alex mentioned her appearance on The Dating Game. Here is the clip from 1980:
Jackie mentioned that the other segment on that show had Pee Wee Herman.
The players had some creative misses on the tea guy and the German place for the Beatles.
WORDS THAT SHOULD RYHME $400: Difficult & the stuff that’s kneaded to make bread
Eric was correct with: while I counted my correct as well.
The FJ! clue was solvable with the just the category and the Drive’s name as with or without the year it would not change my correct response.
This is what Eric had:
Jackie leapfrogged both Kyle Becker and Mary Ann Borer to get into the 12th spot and 13th with the upcoming Teacher added. A win tomorrow and she can go by four more players.

I'm curious what made that FJ solvable with the category and street name only - unless one has studied Welsh (which is how I recognized the language). I was feeling pretty clever but a little less so now.MarkBarrett wrote: ↑Wed Dec 19, 2018 11:36 am

Edited to add that I'm not sure what Trish was going for with that FJ wager.

The clues for handy reference in DO THE MATH since it's bound to be a topic of board interest:
$200: It's the decimal equivalent of 1/8
$400: 9 divided by 3/4 = this
$600: If x² + 2 = 18, x = this
$800: It's 5% of 400
$1000: (x + 1)² expands to this
One way of doing the math in the category:
Once Hammer checks in then the discussion can go to his thread.

Spoiler
$200: 2/8 = .250 so for 1/8 divide in half for .125 (really more know the math than do the math)
$400: invert and multiply so 9 times 4 is 36 and divided by 3 is 12
$600: take the 2 away from the left to leave x squared and take the 2 away from the right to leave 16 for x squared = 16 which is 4
$800: 10% of 400 is 40, so for 5% divide again to get 20

A surprising bit of deductive reasoning there. I would have said "4 or -4," certainly.
Oh, what has science wrought? I sought only to turn a man into a metal-encased juggernaut of destruction powered by the unknown properties of a mysterious living crystal. How could this have all gone wrong?
Re: Wednesday, December 19, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Jackie is full of stories. I love it.
Ran the Fab Four category.
Surprisingly I didn't struggle with the first four math problems at all. $1,000 cost me the run because I had no idea how to "expand" that or any other problem.
Also 4/5 on Tea and Architecture, missing masala chai and pedament.
Ralph Waldo Emerson = Harvard seemed obscure for the top box. Any reason I should know that? That entire category seemed absurdly YEKIOYD.
Only 0/5 today was the Superhero category. Yawn.
Obviously Welsh with the "cwm" part, but my brain is getting zero results for "Welsh" + "poet".
Lach Trash: Hamburg, Lipton, casserole/hyperbole, plus four. Also got the "bargain bin" and Okeechobee DDs.

*raises hand* sure would! My exact answer at home was '4 or -4' but if I were on the show? Definitely -4. It was a free $3000, gotta spice it up somehow. Also not sure why we're spoilering this.
A 4 day champ!!! Please make it 10. Or 20. But also, better FJ wagers? It'll be interesting to see what she bets with a crush lead.

My kids and I have long had a private joke about how Sean Bean's name should be pronounced like "Seen Bawn", so there was no way I was missing that one.
I would have been willing to bet Dylan Thomas was born much earlier than 1914, but Welsh + Poet can't be anybody else.

Re: Wednesday, December 19, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
A year ago and change, Wilbur Farley lost because he wrote "Sgt Pepper's Lonely heart" before his light pen stopped working. He interpreted the morning briefing instructions to mean that "Sgt Pepper" alone would not have been accepted. Today, Jackie made exactly that response and was credited.
The following clue appeared to ask for a completion to the lyric "Let me take you down 'cause I'm going to" so Jackie appropriately supplied "Strawberry fields". But the confusingly worded clue actually wanted the song title of which has an additional word that appears later. Alex paused and she supplied the "forever" in time.
Pet peeve on the math front. They always do this. If x² + 2 = 18, x = this. Eric supplied a partial response, "What is 4?" But did Alex pause and wait? Of course not. He ruled Eric correct. Sorry, buddy. Even a wimpy math teacher would only give you partial credit for that.
Another pet peeve. Huey Long is not the only famous Louisiana politician with that last name. "Who is Long" should get a BMS. If you can't cough up Huey, you don't deserve the points.

I'm 33 years old and "Lake Titicaca" still makes me giggle.
Coryat: $35,000
J: Got the DD. 5/5 on Math and Fab Four, 4/4 on Banned Books, 4/5 on Higher Education (knew it had to be either Arizona or ASU, and wasn't feeling lucky enough to commit to a guess) and Tea & Sympathy. 2/4 on Words That Should Rhyme.
DJ: 1/2 on DDs (made the same mistake as Eric). 5/5 on Architecture, 4/5 on Lakes and Fab 4. 0/5 on Superheroes (as is to be expected).
Missed FJ. Recognized that "Cwmdonkin" looked Welsh (though for a brief instant I thought it was Cherokee, based on the character forms in Sequoyah's syllabary: Tsa-la-gi, the Cherokee autonym, looks like CWy), but I always forget that Dylan Thomas is Welsh.
LT: Hamburg (I had literally just been reading the Wikipedia article on the Beatles this morning), Lipton, Harvard, chains,

I've never studied Welsh, but I do have a knack for picking up certain patterns of letters in the written forms (or, at least, Romanized written forms) of languages I've never studied such that I can identify them quite reliably. I couldn't ever begin to explain those patterns for you; I just kind of pick up on them intuitively. I suspect I'm not the only one.Elijah Baley wrote: ↑Wed Dec 19, 2018 12:22 pmI'm curious what made that FJ solvable with the category and street name only - unless one has studied Welsh (which is how I recognized the language). Yes on FJ. Thought the name sounded Welsh so went with Dylan Thomas, who I believed was. I wasn't positive on the birth year but it seemed like a fine answer to put down.
I'm glad, too, because seeing that FJ category at first, I was like "I got no chance".
