Game Recap for Show #7952, 2019-03-19

CONTESTANTS
Megan McAllen, an attorney from Washington, D.C.
Bren Inman, a store manager from Puyallup, Washington
Lindsey Shultz, a physician and health care analyst from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (whose 3-day cash winnings total $79,602)

OPENING REMARKS
Alex: Thank you, Johnny. Hi, folk. I'm not sure Megan and Bren would agree that it's a great idea, but it is certainly possible for Lindsey to hit the $100,000 mark today. It's within range, of course. Let's see what happens, though, in this half-hour, shall we? We start off with the Jeopardy! Round, and we begin with these categories...

JEOPARDY! ROUND CATEGORIES
THEY NAMED THE COLLEGE FOR ME! (4/5, including 1 missed Daily Double)
HATS INCREDIBLE (5/5)
THE BOOK TITLE TITLE (3/5)
TRIPLE "O" RATED (5/5) (Alex: That letter coming up three times at least in each correct response.)
U.S. CITIES (4/5)
TV's MIDDLE CHILD (5/5)

THE RIGHTS & THE WRONGS
Lindsey: 11 R, 0 W
Megan: 8 R, 1 W
Bren: 7 R, 2 W (including 1 DD)

Clues revealed: 30
Triple Stumpers: 3
Jeopardy! Round Potential Lach Trash: $2,800

SCORES AT THE FIRST BREAK
Lindsey: $3,600
Bren: $400
Megan: $400

CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: Everybody loves dogs, and Megan McAllen from Washington, D.C. has a special dog who is or was a member of the Canine Corps.

Megan: He's a member of the Canine Corps at the Historical Congressional Cemetery in D.C., which is still a functioning cemetery, but it also is a place where lots of historic people are and were buried, including John Philip Sousa and J. Edgar Hoover. So my dog can run around there off-leash and pay his respects.

Alex: Oh. Your idea of paying respects is different from mine.

Alex: Bren Inman from Washington state. You're playing guitar with your eight-year-old son. Are you developing a future rocker here? What is this all about?

Bren: You know, he says he doesn't like rock music. So my son Henry took up guitar a little while ago, and I've played for a really long time, so it's a lot of fun to kind of just jam out with him. He's really good.

Alex: But is the emphasis mostly on rock, or...

Bren: Yeah, with the guitar playing for sure, yeah.

Alex: Yeah. Okay, good.

Alex: Lindsey Shultz is our champion. We keep introducing you as a physician and healthcare analyst. But what's your academic area of interest primarily?

Lindsey: The thing I'm focusing on right now is called harm's reduction. The basic idea is you stop looking at public health policies as either black or white. So the best example we have right now is when we're thinking about e-cigarettes. They're really great for helping adults who have nicotine addiction. They're really bad for introducing teenagers to nicotine. So it's a balance of how do we make sure that they get into the right hands, used by the right people, to make sure that they do the most good that they can.

Alex: Good for you.

JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Bren found the Daily Double on the 20th clue. Lindsey had $3,600, Bren had $1,000, and Megan was at $1,000. Bren wagered $800.

THEY NAMED THE COLLEGE FOR ME! $600: This Big 10 school in Indiana kicked off in 1869, named for one of its early financial supporters
(Bren: What is Marquette?)

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
U.S. CITIES $1000: P.T. Barnum was once the mayor of this most populous Connecticut city
(Megan: What is Hartford?)
(Bren: What is New Haven?)

THE BOOK TITLE TITLE $800: "Action Figure! The Life and Times of Doonesbury's Uncle ____"

THE BOOK TITLE TITLE $1000: Eugene O'Neill's play "The ____ Jones"

SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Lindsey: $7,600
Megan: $3,600
Bren: $600

It’s easy to already imagine all the crying there will be over adding a “The” to one of the TV show titles. J! rules permit it although some viewers have a very difficult time with it.

Megan earned laughs with the capper to her dog running off leash in the cemetery story as her pet is able to “pay his respects.”

Lindsey easily worked over her challengers today while leaving plenty of opportunities for the buzzer not important with the good handful of clues she did not know. 4th podiums will be busy picking up the trash.

The FJ! clue was another guess hit for me as I matched the challengers with the get. Pick a place and I did. The clue said “much closer” and following instructions I got lucky since I knew nothing about the war.

For cheezguyty when was the last time both challengers got a FJ! clue correct that the lock leader missed?

The tracker has movement:

Coryat: 40,400
50 R/0 W
DD: 1/3
FJ:
LT: Bridgeport, (Uncle) Duke, Purdue (DD), cappuccino, The Potato Eaters, Tenderfoot, Craig T. Nelson

Lindsay continues to be a beast. I know there are plenty of folks on social media complaining about the loudness of her signaling, but it's obviously working.

FJ! was sort of a WECIB. Like Mark, I'm unfamiliar with the war, but "much closer country across the water" points squarely at Morocco.

I'm familiar with the buildings of the same name, but I never thought of "brownstone" as a type of building material. Really good clue there.

I also whiffed on the deer DD, missing the 5-foot clue and going with fox instead. I think I was influenced by the name of controversial MMA fighter Fallon Fox.
Sprinkles are for winners.

Ran Triple O.

Bridgeport, Connecticut rings not the faintest of bells for me, and it cost me the run because I bit on the Hartford negbait. I was stunned when that was wrong, since I literally couldn't think of another city in CT.

Also missed only Hermes in Hats.

All but brownstone (NHOI) in Vocabulary.

3/5 in Voice Actors. Can't say I've haerd of Craig T. Nelson, and blanked on Clooney.

Surprisingly, I also ran the UV category.

Country across the water from Spain? Uhhhh.... IDK, Morocco? Sure, why not.

I narrowed FJ! down to a coin flip between Morocco and Algeria, and went the wrong way. "Much closer" certainly seemed to point toward those two countries, but I really wasn't sure how to narrow it down to one or the other.

Lol. when the most populous city in Connecticut came up, I pre called that at least two contestants would nag. Hardly anyone knows that Bridgeport is the correct answer.

Lol, just lol at Marquette being a financial backer of a college in Indiana.

For a sentence spoken without expression, I said Sotto voce. Judges?

That refers to speaking under your breath or quietly enough so others can't hear.

Eg "See you later!" sotto voce"If I can't avoid you."

to heighten your knowledge of cities by state you should try some jetpunk quizzes...that is where i learned that bridgeport is the largest city by population in connecticut

Everything I know about Chicago, I learned from a Sufjan Stevens album

And everything I know about the Red Baron, I learned from Peanuts.

"Is that a ten-gallon hat or are you just happy to see me?"

Friends don't let friends go to West Lafayette.

I can't hear "pork pie hat" without thinking about the Charles Mingus tune.

Punning on the term for casual assault and rape from A Clockwork Orange maybe wasn't the best idea.

There's also a Garden of the Gods in Shawnee National Forest in southern Illinois.

Pre-called Hatshepsut. Was disappointed.

Coryat: $42,400

J: 28R2P. Got DD. 5/5 on College, Hats, Triple "O", Cities, and TV.

DJ: 23R7P. 2/2 on DDs. 5/5 on Queens and Ultraviolet. 4/5 on Park-itecture, Vocabulary, Van Gogh. 1/5 on Film Voices.

FJ: Instaget.

yeah that was laughable...as soon as i saw big 10 and indiana it had to be purdue since there are only 2 unis in indiana that are part of the big 10 and the other indiana univeristy, which obviously does not fit the clue

I just wish they'd have the ToC sooner than later now. We lose another good champ from the leaderboard because of the extended wait.
