CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS
Alex: Welcome back. At the beginning of the show, we mentioned some of the many awards that David Faber has received for writing and commenting about finance. Finance--very important to us. Somebody sneezes in Athens, and our stock market goes down.
David: That is true.
Alex: But it's a dull subject. It's way above my head. I don't understand it. Are we gonna be dealing with finance for throughout the entire political campaign that's coming up, and then into the future beyond that?
David: Uh, certainly, we are. It's very important when it comes back to things, for example, like the U.S. budget deficit and taxes--those are all finance-related issues, Alex, and those will become very, very important--probably, and should be, one hopes, discussed to great length between the two candidates.
Alex: All right. Now tell me about your charity.
David: My charity is New Visions for Public Schools. It's a charity that supports the 1.1 million students in the public schools in New York City, with a lot of different programs designed to enrich their experience, make sure they graduate, go to college. Also runs a number of charter schools, two of which I'm on the board of.
Alex: All right. Education.
David: Yes.
Alex: Good for you.
[Applause]
Alex: Dana Perino. A little birdie told me that you were getting ready for this tournament by working out with Karl Rove. Is that correct?
[Dana laughs.]
Alex: Were you practicing with Karl?
Dana: Uh, well, Karl was not just "Bush's Brain". He was everybody's brain, so I had to tap into that.
Alex: But you realize, of course, that that will only help you with the clues on the far right side of the board.
[Laughter]
Dana: As long as that helps me win, I'm okay with that.
Alex: Okay. Now tell me about your charity.
Dana: I'm playing for P2V, which was--it used to be called Pets 2 Vets. It's a charity that helps connect our military veterans that suffer from PTSD with a rescue animal--usually a dog. And it's amazing what the two of them can do together. It helps them deal with all sorts of things that they went through in their life. It hasn't had a lot of notoriety to now, but hopefully with this, we'll be able to match up more veterans with pets.
Alex: Good for you.
[Applause]
Alex: As you all know, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar spent 20 years as one of the biggest stars in the NBA. He set records that I don't think will ever be matched. And in the past 20 years, you've done all kinds of things. You don't seem to be able to hold a regular job.
[Kareem laughs.]
Alex: You've been a coach, a mentor, you've written six or seven or eight books. Now you're a cultural ambassador. But are you getting more satisfaction out of the freedom that you have now?
Kareem: Oh, definitely so, Alex. It's great to do things, uh, where your heart and your mind lead you and, uh, not have to be at practice at, uh, 9:30 in the morning. It's--it's, uh... it's really very rewarding.
Alex: All right. Tell me about your charity.
Kareem: The Skyhook Foundation. Our purpose is to encourage young people to exercise their minds and, uh, realize the power of knowledge. Uh, we do that by, uh, putting them together with mentors who will encourage them to pursue careers in, uh, education and become innovators in the same way that, uh, they pursue trying to be athletes or entertainers.
Alex: All right. Another charity that affects our young people. Good.
[Applause]
TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
LAKERS $800: People walk like Egyptians around this lake formed by the creation of the Aswan High Dam
(Kareem: What is, uh, Lake Aswan?)
THE FIVE $200: The 5 movie ratings in the U.S. are NC-17, R, PG, PG-13 & this one
(Kareem: What is X?)
(Alex: No.)
[Loud laughter from audience]
(Alex: You went in the wrong direction! We were looking for a [*] rating, not an X rating. Remember, Kareem, this is a family show.)
THE FIVE $800: "The Five Ways", a work of 13th c. philosophy, lays out 5 proofs for the existence of this being
(Alex: Gotta go for the obvious. The existence of [*].)
THE NEW YORK TIMES 21st CENTURY HEADLINES $200: In 2003 the headline read, "Davis Is Out, Schwarzenegger Is in By Big Margins in California" in this type of vote
(Kareem: What is the California gubernatorial race?)
(Alex: I need you to be a little more specific.)
(Kareem: What--what is the California gubernatorial election?)
SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
David: $2,800
Dana: $2,400
Kareem: $1,200

19 right today. Maybe these people perform poorly under pressure but it seems so slow and painful. Some of them seemed very easy.
As for FJ, I have NEVER heard that being used to describe a snail or tornado. Ever.

Re: Tuesday, May 15, 2012 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)
These boards MAY be a cut harder than teen week, but there was nothing to miss today. And the teens were a lot easier to watch.
I'm guessing Alex doesn't speak Japanese. gozaimasooo?
I'd make a crack about Fox and the negative conservatism/intelligence (maybe sophistication of thought) connection, but Vanya might be offended to the point of rudeness. Chris Wallace tomorrow... And Karl Rove was 'everybody's brain.' Better leave that one alone too.

I don't get it. No stalling, no scenery-chewing, no applause, fast clue selection, and we still reveal fewer clues in J! than we did on Monday?!? HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE?!?!?!
(Also, LTaM at 18, time's-up beeps at 20. There is NO way those 3 clues took up a whole minute. Seriously, what the hell?!)
Absolutely no clue on FJ! I have never seen a picture of the Guggenheim before. I did a Google image search and my first thought was "orange construction barrel".

Predictable comments/jokes from predictable posters aside...
Instaget FJ. Nothing else to say about this one, very little entertainment value. I think I'm out. Celebrity weeks are always a test of patience, but this one has been brutal so far, and I'm not in the mood for three more episodes of this. I'll just play the FJs from the thread/archive.

Well, Kareem seemed a little slow to me (again with slow play from an experienced player), but yeah, the J! rounds have been practically unwatchable.TenPoundHammer wrote:I don't get it.

Kareem gets his 2nd YouTube moment in 2 appearances. Can't help laugh though. Now how that was a triple stumper is beyond me.
I got final but am a bit disappointed in Dana.

The funny thing is that Kareem actually had some good gets in there. Too many mistakes sunk him, though.

Yes, the play didn't seem slow to me. Kareem was a little draggy, but he was faster than Robert Gibbs was yesterday and no slower than Chris Matthews. But they did have more TS, so maybe that killed the time. Also, the interviews last longer since they talk about themselves and then explain their charity.
My first thought on the movie ratings was X, then remembered it's not a real rating and they were going in descending order. Surprised no one got the rebound after Kareem's missed layup.
I've never seen the Guggenheim or heard it described. Went with MOMA just to have something. It does pop up a lot on the show and it has weird art, so it seemed like it might have a weird design.
FJ betting wasn't the best. The leader had a lock and bet to protect it. The other two had no reason to go all in. but it does not matter if you come in second or third, so it is no big deal.
I'm now batting .500 on knowing who these people are. Kareem was the only one I'd heard of. How I'd forgotten Bush's press secretary is beyond me. But why do they have a former basketball player in a week devoted to Washington DC "insiders"?
With only one DD found, I'd say this game was worse than yesterday.

Gawd this was painful. How on earth do all three clank Yom Kippur? Day of Atonement? Seriously? And no one gets Tom Clancy or Michael Crichton?

To be fair to Kareem, I think he did know that yom meant day but misspoke. The others, not so much.DBear wrote:Gawd this was painful. How on earth do all three clank Yom Kippur? Day of Atonement? Seriously? And no one gets Tom Clancy or Michael Crichton?
