Tuesday, April 23, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

James Holzhauer game 14. James breaks the $1 million mark.
CONTESTANTS
Kevin Donohue, a principal from Los Angeles, California
Claudia Walters, a grant writer from Mesa, Arizona
James Holzhauer, a professional sports gambler from Las Vegas, Nevada (whose 13-day cash winnings total $942,738)
OPENING REMARKS
Alex: Thank you, Johnny. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen. When you were watching yesterday's program, and many, many people were, you saw our champion, James, set a new record. He moved into fourth place on the top five list of single-day winning totals. Actually, the record is that he bumped himself out of fourth place. No, no, no. The record is that he holds all five of the top winning scores.
[Applause]

CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS
Alex: Kevin Donohue is a principal from right here in Los Angeles. And you like to collect stones from memorable places you visit. What are we talking about? Gold and silver? Things like that?
Kevin: I wish. I wish.
Alex: Yeah.
Kevin: Whenever we're at a special place or a significant event happens in life, I like to pick up a little rock to remember it by.
Alex: What's the most memorable place you have visited that you have a stone to remind you of?
Kevin: Probably the Forum in ancient Rome.
Alex: Ah. Okay.
Kevin: It's an old stone.
Alex: You're not supposed to pick up stones at the Forum and take them home. The Italians frown on that.
Alex: Claudia Walters is a grant writer from Arizona who is celebrating with her husband how many years, your anniversary?
Claudia: 44 years of marriage. And before you ask, yes, I must've been a child bride.
[Laughter]
Alex: What's the secret to having a marriage that endures for 44 years?
Claudia: We laugh a lot at ourselves. If you laugh at the other person, that's not as good.
[Laughter]
Alex: And what's really bad is when you point and laugh. That's really bad.
Alex: James Holzhauer. We keep introducing him as a gambler from Las Vegas. But when he was a kid, his dad wanted to teach him that gambling is a rip-off. So what did he do?
James: Yeah, so we happened to be walking through a casino. I think it was in the Bahamas. And he said, "Watch how easy it is to lose this money." Put a dollar in a slot machine, won $7. And he--he kept betting the dollars back until he finally lost it all and was like, "See?"
Alex: Obviously it didn't work with you.
James: No, not quite.
JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
James found the Daily Double on the 17th clue. James had $8,200, Claudia had $800, and Kevin was at $600. James made it a True Daily Double, wagering $8,200.
MERCURY $600: While the planet Mercury doesn't have rings or moons, it's full of these with names like Bach, Beethoven & Tolstoy
(Alex: [Before James wagers, referencing James' "all in" gesture"] Are you gonna do the push?)
(James: Uh, okay. [Gestures as if pushing in a pile of poker chips] $8,200.)
(Alex: I didn't try to talk you into it. But okay.)
TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
WE WILL ROCK YOU $1000: In November 2018 this band flew high with 12 of 50 songs on the Hot Rock Songs chart, including "Bandito", "Morph" & "My Blood"
RHYMING PHRASES $1000: The plane seen here is called one of these due to its ability to collect water efficiently
(Kevin: What is a bucket plane?)
WE WILL ROCK YOU $400: In 2018 this band "didn't have a dime but I always had a vision, always had high, high hopes"
(James: Who is Fall Out Boy?)
SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
James: $20,000
Claudia: $1,200
Kevin: $600

Re: Tuesday, April 23, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
James with 22R in the J! round is owning the buzzer. Claudia & Kevin kept James to 19R in the DJ! round helped by Claudia getting 3/5 in PREGNANCY.
James could have easily gone for more on DD2 & DD3 with his huge leads. This was a day he could have set a new 1-day record with the 4/4 on big clues and huge advantage on the buzzer.
I learned today that Cary Grant was in the Beatles as Alex's impression while reading that clue was nowhere near that member of the Fab Four.
The FJ! clue was a head-scratching immediate no-doubter as I almost could not believe J! was asking something that would be better placed in the June tournament. Any misses that get posted here will be fascinating exercises in over-thinking. (Yes, I know that I am now setting myself up to miss tomorrow with a clue that will poll at 75% as I'll never learn.)
James needs to get one of those shirts with two commas.

This puts James's average over $75,000 per game. Put another way, his mean score over 14 games is higher than any score anyone in the past had ever achieved with the sole exception of Roger Craig's old one-day record. --Bob

Re: Tuesday, April 23, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
$1,155,000 for 15 games is $77,000 average. With $1,061,554 banked that has James needing $93,446 (and a win) tomorrow to hit the magical average. To even mention such hypotheticals would have seemed insane prior to James hitting the stage.

13/14 Games as runaways = 93%
13/14 correct in FJ = 93%
Season 35 correct FJ average for all contestants is: 53.28%
So his chance of losing is 7% * 7% * 53.28% = 2.7182% which makes his chance of winning 99.728%.
The streak of games probability becomes lower than 50% after 254 games.
Get comfortable.

I'm old enough to remember when Roger Craig held the record for highest single-game winnings, and didn't only rank 8th on that list.
Perhaps this encapsulates James's greatness as much as anything else: he could have set a new 1-day record if he had wanted to.MarkBarrett wrote: ↑Tue Apr 23, 2019 11:32 am James could have easily gone for more on DD2 & DD3 with his huge leads. Re: Tuesday, April 23, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
I didn't know that dragons were considered "mythical serpents". I don't think of dragons as serpentine. Then I remembered too late the "noodle dragon" style, which I was introduced to by Mushu from Mulan.
What was the TOM for Queen Elizabeth II? Any queen could have had 30 corgis and I saw literally no way to narrow it down.
Didn't recognize anything in that TV category.
However, I ran "Over".
I misread "after" as before and racked my brains trying to think of something important that had occurred in 1873. I knew 1873 was too late for the Civil War, so I just had nothing. Even just focusing on "two men" + "19th century" turned up nothing. Facepalm-worthy miss on my part, but it just wasn't there.

Re: Tuesday, April 23, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Was Claudia taking a nap during the first game of the taping day? She knew what she was up against and kept going to the top of the board. There was a very small window in DJ she could have put some pressure on James had she found one. But then again, she was never going to make it a TDD. Just frustrating to watch a player not even try to win.
James knowledge base continues to impress even though he did have a neg today. But much of the time, if you don't have a neg or two, you aren't ringing in often enough on clues you are sure enough on.

$1,155,000 for 15 games is $77,000 average. With $1,061,554 banked that has James needing $93,446 (and a win) tomorrow to hit the magical average. To even mention such hypotheticals would have seemed insane prior to James hitting the stage.

Only Ken and James have gotten 1 million in regular games, and it took Ken 30 games to get there, so yes.(I guess Brad, technically, got there in less games if you count tournament play, as he won 1 million for the M$M's in his 11th game played. Not really an apples to apples comparison though. Certainly the quickest in time elapsed from first appearance.)ACW wrote: ↑Tue Apr 23, 2019 7:51 pmjev15 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 23, 2019 7:46 pmI appreciate that you allowed for the possibility that James could accumulate $93,446 and lose.MarkBarrett wrote: ↑Tue Apr 23, 2019 1:15 pm

top box, dude....what other queen is the most widely known to the masses in this country in the history of the world?TenPoundHammer wrote: ↑Tue Apr 23, 2019 7:30 pm I didn't know that dragons were considered "mythical serpents".
Facepalm-worthy miss on my part, but it just wasn't there.

hope her plethora of grand kids give her a reaming for that horrid stratGolf wrote: ↑Tue Apr 23, 2019 7:43 pm Was Claudia taking a nap during the first game of the taping day? She knew what she was up against and kept going to the top of the board. There was a very small window in DJ she could have put some pressure on James had she found one. But then again, she was never going to make it a TDD. Just frustrating to watch a player not even try to win.
James knowledge base continues to impress even though he did have a neg today. But much of the time, if you don't have a neg or two, you aren't ringing in often enough on clues you are sure enough on.

But there was no big neon sign hint specifically pointing TO her. It could very easily be some other prominent, or not so prominent, queen.CasketRomance wrote: ↑Tue Apr 23, 2019 8:07 pm top box, dude....what other queen is the most widely known to the masses in this country in the history of the world?
