Game Recap for Show #7981, 2019-04-29

James Holzhauer game 18.

CONTESTANTS
Adam Levin, a sports information director from Ashland, Massachusetts
Jasmine Leonas, a social media specialist from Chicago, Illinois
James Holzhauer, a professional sports gambler from Las Vegas, Nevada (whose 17-day cash winnings total $1,275,587)

OPENING REMARKS
Alex: Thank you, Johnny. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome, everyone, to The James Holzhauer Show. I would have said, "Welcome to The Alex and James Show", but he kind of blew me out of the picture last week when he went over a million dollars. Keep in mind, all good things can come to an end, and that's what Jasmine and Adam are hoping for--but not in a nasty way--today. Let's see how things work out. Here we go. Jeopardy! Round. And today, we get to deal with these categories...

JEOPARDY! ROUND CATEGORIES
WAIT, SOMETHING'S "OFF" (5/5)
PUP CULTURE (5/5)
MOVIE STORES (4/5)
LODGEPODGE (5/5)
POTENT PORTABLES (5/5)
BREAKS & LIVERS (4/5, including 1 missed Daily Double)

THE RIGHTS & THE WRONGS

JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
James found the Daily Double on the 1st clue. James had no money, Jasmine was scoreless, and Adam had nothing in the bank. James wagered $1,000.

BREAKS & LIVERS $1000: The portal vein bring venous blood to the liver, while this artery brings oxygenated arterial blood
(James: What is the pulmonary?)

SCORES AT THE FIRST BREAK
Adam: $3,200
James: $3,000
Jasmine: $2,800

CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: Adam Levin is from Massachusetts, and he admits to being part of the worst a capella group of all time. Really?

Adam: It's true. Part of my college sketch comedy troupe--shout-out to Boris' Kitchen--we decided to parody a popular a capella group on campus at the time. And I decided because I have zero singing talent that it would be perfect for me. And we did some elaborate choreography but only sang one note. We were the Monotones.

Alex: The Monotones. Not as good as the Temptations.

Adam: Definitely we were not.

Alex: All right.

Alex: Jasmine Leonas is from Chicago, Illinois. A social media specialist. Podcasts.

Jasmine: Yes. Yes.

Alex: Podcasts are very popular these days.

Jasmine: Yes.

Alex: You have one. Tell me about it.

Jasmine: I do. So I host a podcast with a friend of mine, and we talk about plants in movies, TV shows. Treat them kind of as their own characters, and the science behind them and what the real story is.

Alex: It's like playing a game as a child, isn't it?

Jasmine: Yeah, it's really fun. Really, really fun.

Alex: Okay. Good for you.

Alex: James Holzhauer is our champion. I have noticed that in two of the matches, you worked things out so that you would wind up with a total of $90,812 as your winning total. That was not a coincidence.

James: No. On September 8, 2012, I got married. Still living with the consequences of that decision to this day.

[Laughter]

Alex: Whoa, wait a minute. Is your wife in the audience today?

James: No, she's not. I can say whatever I want.

Alex: Okay.

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
MOVIE STORES $1000: In "The Shop Around the Corner", Margaret Sullavan & this actor bicker at work but are sweethearts by letter

SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
James: $6,200
Adam: $5,000
Jasmine: $3,800

What? Alex does not watch Honey Boo Boo and her shows? It's "Alonna" and not "Alaana."

Alex was at his best after DD3 with, "We've got a game!"

And we sure did. James was vulnerable on a miss to lose to Adam and even to Jasmine depending on how the wagering went.

A miss for me on the FJ! clue as I could not figure it out in 30 seconds from home. On stage I would have only been worse on that type of clue. I did not need Alex to tell me Adam was correct when the response was revealed. Bien sur!

Three FJ! responses with no extra writing to begin the rule in place. At least James had a chance to acknowledge many of his family and friends.

It's nice to have a James game that was actually suspenseful going into FJ - his first game that wasn't at least a crush after DJ, meaning there were multiple scenarios where he could have gone on to lose the game. Adam played well and it was great to see him do what he had to do with his DD3 wager. With that said, there would have been a real "what could have been" situation if James and Adam had both missed FJ (not that that was likely with James now having what I believe is a record-tying 12 straight correct FJ solves; but with a tougher FJ he could have missed). Adam's massive FJ wager, while it enabled the exciting TV of his record second-place score, forced him to get FJ right to even have a chance of winning. Meanwhile, Jasmine's zero-dollar wager gave her no chance of winning, whereas if she had risked at least $5,234 (enough to pass James if he made the cover wager and responded incorrectly), she would have won on a sole solve, assuming Adam made the same wager that he did.

You can tell Alex has enjoyed James's run and even so much today that it was a close game.

Tough luck for Adam, he seemed like a really excellent player who just happened to run into unarguably a top 5 all times player.

This. Good thing gets and misses happened as they did, otherwise there would be serious PTSD risk.

Nevertheless, great fighting game. Adam showed how James could be beaten.

That was a decent game. I would be much more in favor of James run if more of his games were like this and fewer of them were blowouts that were over dozens of Clues before FJ.

I don't think I'm wrong stating that James would have lost if he hadn't found that Double Jeopardy round Daily Double.

Would "bed and breakfast" have been accepted for the "room and board" clue? I can't remember the exact wording that clue had.

I felt a little bad for Adam. He seems like someone who would've normally had a nice run as champion. Just wasn't happening against the King.

Fun game... shame Adam had to lose as he seemed like an excellent contestant, but I was rooting for James. Adam probably would have been a 7-game champ or so, but I expect James to be around three or four times that long still.

Anyways, it was cool to see James grind out a win on Friday with no DDs, and here grind out a win without crushing it, but now I think we are due for a few days of $100k+ victories this week!
I'm done. Abandon all hope ye who enter here.
