It's the custom in Iceland for females to take on their fathers' first name +"dottir" as their surname. That was the giveaway.
The bigger giveaway was "island nation" in Europe. Forgetting the name, the only options are Iceland, Cyprus, Malta and UK. Add that with the Nordic- sounding name, and you get Iceland. If they didn't give the island, I probably wouldn't have risk a guess.
"Nordic sounding" my ass. That name could be from anywhere.
Yes, "Jakobsdóttir" totally sounds like it might be Irish.

"General Foods" was way too general of a name for me to get either. Not surprised with the top-box TS there.
Image

General Foods was a very important company. They owned Minute Rice, Jell-O, Kool-Aid, Log Cabin syrup, which was also mentioned on tonight's Show, Maxwell House, Birds Eye frozen food, and The Post line of cereals, including Grape-Nuts. They were also the original sponsor of Schoolhouse Rock.
I'd rather cuddle then have sex. If you're into grammar, you'll understand.

Try this Sporcle quizz and see how many you can guess:

https://www.sporcle.com/games/sproutcm/ ... wo_animals

That's based on a survey of 50 children's books. More details here:

Spoiler
No aardvark in the top two for A. Unfortunately, the article doesn't list all the also-rans.

Spoiler
"I'm rooting for James to run the rest of this week again. Hopefully he'll be locking up the next four and winning like $100,000 in each game to make up for this one."
So far so good.

The show is running the teacher's tournament next week for sweeps week, but with the ratings bump that James is generating they'd be better off with the regular games.

You know this already. "It is X sounding" is inherently subjective.

I could totally read that as Gaelic, sure.

And hell, who says the name of the leader has to be tied to the nation that they lead? Because when I hear the name "Barack Hussein Obama", I think that it's the most American name I've ever heard in my life.

Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir gained notoriety at the time she took office for being the first openly gay head of government ever.

AND the week after. So should James win today and tomorrow, we'll have to wait until May 20th to see his next game.

It is a fairly well-known part of Nordic culture - and particularly Icelandic culture - that they use last names with the suffixes "son"/"sen" and "dóttir" (daughter) to indicate their father. Her brothers use the last name "Jakobsson". Of the 63 members of the Icelandic parliament, 61 have such a suffix in their name.

You asked what the tease-out metric was, you received an answer. There's nothing wrong with not knowing the answer, but don't attack the messenger who's trying to explain to you how you could have come up with the answer.

Seeing the Go-Go's come up made my day.
I've been binge watching Go-Go's concert clips on YouTube nearly every night for the last couple weeks. :D

I never would have got that (without the video) by simply doing the math back to 1981 though.
My memory is not what it used to be. I swear "We Got The Beat" was 1982, not 1981.

It was a great battle on the Billboard Hot 100 when "We Got The Beat" was out. #2 for three weeks...and I was rooting for it...but it would climb no higher, blocked from ascending to the top spot all three of those weeks by Joan Jett and the Blackheart's "I Love Rock and Roll".

It was released as a cut on the Beauty And The Beat album in 1981 yet not released as a 45 RPM until the first full week of January 1982.

Island "nation". There are political disagreements but legally the island hosts two nations (or one and a quarter).

James must be slipping. I actually scooped up a triple stumper today (ratification). First time since Friday's game. Yepper, they sure have been cleaning the boards lately.

PS I know a lot has been made of James's streak of correct FJ answers (now 14 in a row and 19-1 overall). For comparison, in the same time period I am 17-3, well above my average, suggesting a lot of not-terribly-difficult FJ clues lately. A few have been harder but the only one he got that I thought was an amazing get was Europium. Overall, to paraphrase the immortal Chico Escuela, FJs and DDs have been "berry, berry good" to James.

In this game I had hope that Imar would make a better showing and make this a competitive game. Alas, not to be.

Imar was giving a good account of himself in the early goings but I got the distinct impression he stopped trying in the later stages of DJ. I know some contestants make a production of clicking their buzzer, but even given he was quite restrained, it seemed as if he wasn't even bothering to ring in. James is like Brad R, conceals the buzzer behind the lectern. Brad had this swaying thing going on, didn't he?

Does a nation have to be entirely coterminous with an island to be an island nation? I infer from your post that Haiti and the Dominican Republic (among others) don't count as island nations. I say if all of a nation's territory is on an island or islands, it's an island nation.

This.

"An island country does not border other countries except where they control their islands with other countries as in the case of Haiti and the Dominican Republic and are therefore not borderless."
