How did Emma defeat James? She found and converted both DD2 and DD3 while James played DD1 from a starting position on his opening pick limiting him to a $1000 wager.

The J! round total was a perfect $18,000 on the nose with no contestant misses and that nothing extra gained on the first DD other than the box value.

The DJ! round was almost as good with only a $400 clue being a miss then stumping the other two players.

I AM NOT A COOK made me laugh as my breakfast today (brown sugar cinnamon not strawberry) was in the $200 box and I know my dad likes that country guy’s breakfast bowls from the $400 box clue.

Very nice show and tell from Alex with his get well card from James’s daughter, Natasha.

One key point of the game was early in the DJ! round as Jay began play in CAPITAL “A”. James got both the $2000 and $1600 clues. Emma got control getting the $1200 clue when I’m not sure James was even trying to ring in. She stuck with the category for the $800 clue and found DD2 for the big double-up of her 7600.

For the search to find DD3 Emma went to the TV category $2000 and James moved play to perfectly reasonable SCIENCE to perhaps have the last DD. Emma got $1600 and James got the $2000 clue. Sticking with it James went for the $1200 clue. Nope, not there, although certainly could have been there.

James surprised me when he went back to the TV category. Jay picked up consecutive clues there and moved to the bottom of SOVIETS NOT BORN IN RUSSIA. That category as well seemed possible to have the DD. Jay added another $2000 and went to PLAYING A 3-4 for $2000. I think it was unlikely a DD would have been in the word play type of category.

Emma made the wiser move to get out of it and went back to RUSSIA. She was clutch getting the $1600 clue and then picked off the only remaining $2000 clue on the board to find the DD in POLITICAL PHILOSOPHY.

For James to be unheard from for five clues demonstrated how the challengers were tag-teaming him on the buzzer and perhaps messing with his timing.

Emma led at DD3 20400 to 17800 to 7400 with 16 clues after the DD left and $13,200 in value remaining on the board. What to wager? She added $3000 to have James trailing by $5600 with those 16 clues left.

After 20 clues Emma led 25400 to 20600 with $5600 worth of clues remaining. Emma added $800 on clue 21 to increase her lead to 5600 with now only $4800 in value remaining. With nine clues to go Emma was guaranteed the lead if she put her buzzer down or made no errors.

By the end of the round James cutting his deficit to $3200 was not nearly enough. James was defeated with no errors on big clues and not undone by his big wagering. Two challengers showed up and did enough to keep him in check.

Johnny will be announcing a 1-day total tomorrow for the first time since April 4th.

Great job by Emma to go 3/3 on big clues. Ken Jennings and his sacred records are off DEFCON 1 and Brad can reset from 4 to 5 for most money won in total.

Emma has not posted in a while though she is a board member and did run a TD game.

James was an amazing contestant with astounding success on the big clues and he can get ready for an expected invitation to a regular TOC. If he were to win that easily then I would have no objection to a special 3-man cage match with Ken and Brad.

Forget the crazy numbers that some kind of combined 2 or 3-day affair might do to totals and instead have the three of them play single game matches and first to 3 wins. It could go seven games or it could be just three games. 3-1-1 would be a perfect week and one person would be a decisive winner.

Oh yeah, there was a FJ! clue in this game, wasn’t there? 3/3 for the players and a correct guess by me for having no other name to lead me astray.

I did an Archive search of the right guy with Shakespeare and this turned up:
Spoiler

(I have enlarged the two that mention As You Like It
#7029, aired 2015-03-19 THE 16th CENTURY $2,000 (Daily Double): This British poet, playwright & contemporary of Shakespeare was killed in a fight in 1593, allegedly over a bill
#6813, aired 2014-04-09 ENGLISH LITERATURE $800: This "Volpone" author admired his contemporary Shakespeare but did find the Bard sometimes "full of wind"
#6728, aired 2013-12-11 AUDIO BOOK PERFORMERS $400: Monty Python's Terry Jones says of this pre-Shakespeare poet, "Once you get past the spelling, he speaks so clearly"
#6545, aired 2013-02-15 AN IMPORTANT QUESTION $1000: In "As You Like It", Shakespeare quoted this contemporary's "who ever loved that loved not at first sight?"
#4911, aired 2006-01-09 BRING OUT YOUR DEAD $6,000 (Daily Double): This Shakespeare rival & possible secret agent got the point on May 30, 1593
#4424, aired 2003-11-27 WRITERS ON FILM $2,000 (Daily Double): Rupert Everett appeared as this playwright & rival in "Shakespeare in Love"
#4167, aired 2002-10-15 WHAT CENTURY ARE YOU LIVING IN? $600: Christopher Marlowe (assuming he didn't fake his own death, move to France & write Shakespeare's plays)
#3629, aired 2000-05-18 JACOBEAN DRAMA $800: Francis Beaumont's usual partner, he may have teamed up with Shakespeare to write "The Two Noble Kinsmen"
#3432, aired 1999-07-06 THE WRITE STUFF $400: In "As You Like It", Shakespeare paid tribute to this "Dr. Faustus" dramatist, calling him the "Dead Shepherd"
#3254, aired 1998-10-29 DRAMA $600: Shakespeare's 2 greatest contemporaries: one was murdered in 1593 & one killed a man in 1598
#2052, aired 1993-07-06 SECOND PEOPLE $800: This author of "Tamburlaine" has been called "a second Shakespeare", but some think he was the first
#1697, aired 1992-01-07 AUTHORS $600: Born the same year as Shakespeare, this "Dr. Faustus" author was killed in a tavern brawl at age 29
#829, aired 1988-03-24 THEATER $1000: Contemporary of Shakespeare who wrote "Tamburlaine" & "The Jew of Malta"
#191, aired 1985-06-03 PLAYWRIGHTS $500 (Daily Double): Though Irish, he is considered, after Shakespeare, to be Britain's greatest playwright
How did James bet from a second place position? His $1,399 would have had him at $22,001 on a miss to make sure Jay could not double up and be ahead of him. If Emma had suspected James might bet that way she could have bet low and won if the clue had been a tougher one.

As the game went Emma did everything right to earn the title and the big pay day. What may be a harder task could be the elusive second victory that did not happen for these giant slayers:

Nancy Zerg
Victoria Groce
Michael Baker
Margie Eulner Ott
Scarlett Sims
Brian Loughnane
Diana Peloquin

James went absolutely stone cold on the buzzer in DJ, wow.

We’ve been really blessed by some great moments in the past five or so years. Love it.

Assuming the things I've been reading are true...

...it's pretty interesting that a few random people on Facebook had been saying things like "mid-March" and, more specifically, March 12. Some research showed that episodes taped March 12 would be airing the week of June 3. It would be interesting if that turned out to be correct with that degree of accuracy.

I wonder how those comments got let through while others seemed to be deleted very quickly.

Hey, some Greek.

I don't really have much more to add. I would occasionally check Reddit (where any such spoilers supposedly lasted seconds) and Facebook, which was somewhat less moderated. If I remember correctly, there was one guy who said he was there in mid-March when the episode was recorded and that James lost with a final total that he couldn't recall. Another woman, who did not claim to be at the recording, had apparently been tracking down rumors left and right (I did not see any of them) and reported, with a bit more detail each time, that James lost on an episode from March 12 (which would be airing this week) with a cash total just shy of Ken's (which would also be true) to a woman who otherwise shared more than a few characteristics with Nancy Zerg (which would also be true). All of that seemed oddly specific to me.

What's hilarious is watching all the Twittiots saying he made the wrong FJ wager and that's why he, uh, finished where he did.

Back in the early part of James' run there was a post on here that included a link to an interview with James. From that interview it sounded like his reign had ended. Not sure how far back I'll have to go to find the discussion.

I will learn not to post without reading ALL of the prior posts.

King James has fallen. Long live King James. His legacy is as the greatest regular-play contestant in the Trebek incarnation of the show. The way he now totally dominates the record books is astonishing. Now we'll get to see how he does in tournaments, including the inevitable matchup with Ken and Brad.

Why bet so little in FJ if you've got nothing to gain and nothing to lose? The novelty of it?

Perhaps like Ben Kenobi he knew there was a greater good that would come from his defeat. Perhaps his loss here will transform Emma into a Jeodi Knight.

23400 doubled is 46800. Emma would have won by a buck.

23400-1399=22001. Jay could not pass James in the FJ! round.

James did nothing wrong with his wager as on a tougher clue he could have won.

Sure there it would be reasonable for James to bet big just in case Emma ran scared or banking on his previous 31/32 on FJ! clues right.

The targeting on James's FJ! round wager should not be focus of today's discussion.

In every meaningful per-game metric, James was superior to Ken, over a vast sample size. Remember DHKendall's sig line.

IMHO there is no king of Jeopardy!--for one to claim such a crown one would have to have all four major records (highest one-day, longest streak, highest regular play total, highest total). James accomplished something incredible, no doubt, but all those coronations were premature. So do we get to learn who made that website yet?
