Did both of us say "The Ohio State University"? I remember before that was a thing and I'm amused it became a thing.

I'm currently a PhD student at tOSU, so you bet I did! Actually, I put THE Ohio State University. But close.

Question 4: Ohio Around the World

Post by barandall800 »

4. Ohio has many unique city and town names – but also many that it shares with other locales. Name one of the following Ohio city names shared with another locale, based on a brief description of the other locale (12).

This was a fun question to put together. Having cities and towns that share their names with other places is probably a thing in every state, but it seems like it's a lot more common here. It also seems pretty common for the pronunciations to be a bit different than what you'd think it would be. Medina (which is just south of us, as we live in Medina County) and Lima are both pronounced here with a long I, which definitely threw me off at first. And as a longtime Westerner, don't even get me started on how people pronounce Oregon here (that may not just be an Ohio thing, though?).

Question 5: Marvel Cinematic Universe

Post by barandall800 »

5. Cleveland, Ohio was the filming location for a few of the movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Name a theatrically released Marvel Cinematic Universe film (22).

Seeing as this question had the largest number of possible answers, the sheep is relatively small here, and a whopping 6 people scored singletons (with another 5 responses attracting only 2 people). Only one of the Avengers movies was given as a response; "Guardians of the Galaxy" went unused, unlike its sequel. I'm very happy to see that all 3 "Iron Man" movies were selected -- my wife and I are very huge Tony Stark fans. My wife, in fact, helped me get into the MCU. Before meeting her, I had only seen a couple Marvel films and thought they were nice, but wasn't too interested in seeing a bunch of them. Now I'm pretty much all in, which meant watching the emotional rollercoaster that was Endgame a few months ago was much harder than when I wasn't that invested.

For the record, the MCU movies at least partially filmed in Cleveland (that I know of) include our sheep, as well as "The Avengers" (Terminal Tower, a Cleveland landmark, is a prominent part of the scene with Loki allegedly set in Germany).

Question 6: Famous Ohioans

Post by barandall800 »

One more for tonight ...

6. Ohio is the birthplace of many, many famous individuals. Name one of these famous Ohioans based on their picture (14).

There are a LOT of famous people from Ohio. Not saying that that number may be lower or higher than any other state, but seriously. A LOT of famous people from Ohio. (Every day, it seems, I'll find out about some new celebrity that it turns out was born in Ohio.) I had quite the list to choose from: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_people_from_Ohio (Feel free to study that list in case I ever do a sequel to this game. :)) Yvette Nicole Brown was going fairly unused at the beginning of the entry period, but ended up being right behind the sheep. Speaking of the sheep, one of my all-time favorite moments of hers is her memorable turn on "Dancing with the Stars" back in 2009. (YMMV.) Another connection to one of the answers I have: Jamie Farr came to do a spirited narration of "The Night Before Christmas" at the Cleveland Orchestra Christmas concerts this past year (I sing in the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus). He was an absolute blast to hear and see. And I passed right by him in the hallway one of the nights! :)

The 23rd MCU movie, Spider-Man: Far From Home is being released in the U.S. on Tuesday, July 2. According to Box Office Mojo, it was released last weekend in China, Japan, and Hong Kong. Not sure what that says about when it would become a correct answer, but probably before the reveal is finished in any event.

Rome is not a city? Oh wait... you mean Rome, OHIO is not a city.
While the question does include the word "city" when referring to the Ohio place name, I didn't intend for that word to be completely restrictive/exclusive (though I inadvertently ended up entirely using Ohio places that are classified as cities), especially since the distinction between cities, towns, villages, etc. can be a thorny one (and in Ohio, with the addition of townships, it gets even more confusing). I like to err on the generous side when it comes to rulings, and as such I have decided to accept Rome as correct, since it does fit the clue as it stands (Italian city that's a namesake for a cheese you put on spaghetti and other pastas, and that also has a counterpart in Ohio) -- unless anyone has any serious objections.

The updated score should be reflected on the next standings. I'll check to make sure everything works smoothly.

Speaking of making sure the standings work smoothly ...
9021amyers wrote: Tue Jul 02, 2019 5:42 am I’m not listed in the updated standings, though that’s probably for the best.
I'm not sure how that happened. The standings seem to be a little wonky in general this game -- the Tracker didn't even generate any for question 1, the arrows that indicate changes in placement are all over the place, and of course this happened. I'll take a look at them when I run the results for the next question to make sure you (and everyone) are included, and if not I'll try to figure out a fix.

Thanks for your patience, everyone!
