No chance for me on FJ. I think the clue was a bunch of crap.

The clue and category are fine by me. Gotta keep feeding the geriatrics to keep the show alive and pimp the funeral home and nursing home commercials . My whine is the ubiquitous presence of boomer music and culture in every public space. If it was a retro thing that would be fine, but it HAS NEVER GONE AWAY!
What was crap was the review - “the best & worst tendencies of L.A.-situated rock” & was an “unflattering portrait of the milieu”.
Did they like it or hate it? Is it the group or the music they are bashing or loving? It became fashionable to hate the Eagles much later, but I'm sure there were early adopters. I thought it might be an early(?) review of disco, but the category was a surrender to me from the get go. I wonder if Eric felt so strong about the category (insert ageism here) he willfully made the all-in bet for the extra cash in case of a Jason miss?

Golf's point (in addition to Eric misstepping with his wager) is that Shari's all-in was fine.John Boy wrote: ↑Fri Jul 26, 2019 7:04 amEric's strategic situation (IMO) was more complicated than most. If Shari is no factor he could wager $0 and hope that Jason makes the $1 lockout bet and misses. Or he can be3t $2,401 in case Jason wagers $0 and he (Eric) gets it right.
If I were Eric in this scenario I wouldn't bet $0 because I don't want to risk a tie-breaker (we saw one last week and I thought it was heart-breaking to see a guy pin all his hopes on winning the buzzer battle, one shot to win or lose).
That said, in Eric's place I would advise $7,200. That wins the 2-way battle by a buck in the event he and Jason both miss, and it maximizes his winnings if he gets it right and Jason misses. I can't imagine a good reason for Eric to go all-in.
In Shari's place I predict that's what's going to happen with the leaders, so I bet $1,199. That way in the event of a TS it's Jason 4799, Eric 4800, and Shari wins with 4801.
But you are right. In this game there were two dumbass, throw-the-game-away wagers.
In all of the above Eric is the bigger gray-area situation, again IMO. But this was just a sad endgame.
I think if Eric was going to bet anything, he should have bet exactly double his deficit to Jason (i.e. $4,800). That way if Jason bets $2,399 to stay ahead of a $0 wager from Eric, Eric will beat him by $1 if they're both right. Furthermore, if Shari does bet $1,199 and gets FJ right, Eric beats her by $1 if he misses. (This scenario always occurs when second has 80% or more of the leader's score and third has exactly 50% of second's.)

Re: Thursday, July 25, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
There is no reason for Eric to allow Shari to win on a $0 wager or even missing FJ, that's just throwing away winning chances. Because of this, Shari must get FJ correct to have a chance to win, so why not wager everything? Especially since Eric could simply wager $0 because of the necessary cover wager from Jason. Yes, Shari could wager $0 in hopes of a silly wager from Eric, but that's not a given. Regardless, Shari did not make a poor wager.John Boy wrote: ↑Fri Jul 26, 2019 7:04 am Eric's strategic situation (IMO) was more complicated than most. In all of the above Eric is the bigger gray-area situation, again IMO. But this was just a sad endgame.
The valid wagers from Eric are $0, $2401, and $5999. Jason should wager $9601, Shari should wager $6000. Let's run the numbers using this season's stats. Using this game's Coryat's, let's assign Eric a 60% chance of winning a tie-breaker. Of course the below numbers do not take into account category confidence.
RRR = 50 = 24%
RRW = 39 = 19%
WWW = 33 = 16%
RWW = 29 = 14%
WRW = 17 = 8%
RWR = 17 = 8%
WRR = 12 = 6%
WWR = 11 = 5%
$0 wager = (.24)2000+(.19)2000+(.16)12000+(.14)2000+(.08)12000+(.08)2000+(.06)(.6)12000+(.05)(.6)12000 = $5060 and 30.6% winning chances.
$2401 wager = (.24)2000+(.19)2000+(.16)9599+(.14)2000+(.08)14401+(.08)1000+(.06)14401+(.05)2000 = $4872 and 30.0% winning chances.
$5999 wager = (.24)2000+(.19)2000+(.16)6001+(.14)2000+(.08)17999+(.08)1000+(.06)17999+(.05)2000 = $4800 and 30.0% winning chances.
In the above Shari has 4.4%, 5%, and 5% winning chances. So should Shari wager $0? There is a 21% chance of both her opponents missing FJ, she's always going to beat Jason in this scenario, but how often is Eric going to wager more than $6000? If it's 25% or more then she increases her winning chances. And admittedly, with constant sub-optimal wagering, this is a possibility.
Let's take a look at your suggestion of Eric wagering $7200 and Shari $1199.
$7200 wager = (.24)2000+(.19)2000+(.16)1000+(.14)1000+(.08)19200+(.08)1000+(.06)19200+(.05)2000 = $4028 and 14.0% winning chances. Why would Eric throw away half his winning chances?
What if Shari wagers everything vs. Eric wagering $7200?
$7200 wager = (.24)2000+(.19)2000+(.16)4800+(.14)2000+(.08)19200+(.08)1000+(.06)19200+(.05)2000 = $4776 and 30.0% winning chances.
What actually happened
$12000 wager = (.24)2000+(.19)2000+(.16)2000+(.14)2000+(.08)24000+(.08)1000+(.06)24000+(.05)1000 = $4950 and 14.0% winning chances.
In summary, the above is just a lot of numbers saying Shari did just fine and Eric is throwing away money if he wagers more than $5999.

I would've been tempted to do just that for the extra money due to high confidence in that category. But from a pure betting strategy p.o.v., it was a foolish choice.

I was stationed in Germany 1975-1978 and missed out on a lot of the pop music of the era. I got as far as the Eagles, but couldn't ID "Hotel California" as the album, so I just left it as "The Eagles" hoping they had a self-titled album in there.
I knew it was 8 to 10 years too early, but I remembered "Pet Sounds" by the Beach Boys being pretty roundly criticized before it evolved into the being thought highly of, so that would have been my second choice, even knowing it was wrong.
I'm not the defending Jeopardy! champion. But I have played one on TV.

Wheelhouse FJ category for me, and instaget. I’m sort of an Eagles fan, but also can understand a lot of the criticism of the band, and HC the album has the Eagles’ weaknesses on glaring display, especially in the Henley-dominated whinefests Wasted Time and especially The Last Resort. But the album also showcases the band at its peak - the title track in particular is a genuine work of art. I saw them on tour in 1977, supporting the album, and it was quite a concert - but Joe Walsh stole the show with Rocky Mountain Way and made me a lifelong fan of his.
Oh, and Eagles hate by the chattering classes - some of it justified - was absolutely a thing since the beginning.

At the break, I was 14/15 (all but The Jeffersons). Not bad.
I, too, couldn't figure out how to BMS "windshield wipers". That was a tough clue.
No guess on FJ! I love the Eagles, but the "L.A." TOM just seemed to set me further off course. The tone of the review seemed more fitting for a hard rock/punk group to me, and I just couldn't think of anything in those genres that fit 1976. It turns out the Ramones released their first album in 1976, but they were from Queens.

Definitely. I happened to know exactly what the clue was talking about and still struggled to phrase the response. I mean, the guy didn't invent a special kind of windshield wipers that only operate intermittently. So... Some of my favorite country songs come from 2005. I wasn't listening to Top 40 back then, but the fact that "Hollaback Girl" was the second biggest hit of 2005 does not give me much hope.
I think Baby Boomers have way too much say in pop culture, but I don't categorically hate all their choices. I will gladly listen to the Eagles, but there are at best three Queen songs that don't send me straight to the toilet.

I’ve always despised the iggles but that FJ was an instaget. At least if Jason answered incorrectly, he named the greatest album of all time. Although Exile On Main Street has nothing to do with California. I’ve been traveling all over this summer, including Oslo wherein we went into The Big Lebowski bar so it was fun to see that clip above.
