Re: Monday, October 14, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Yeah, by now I have to accept that J! players may not know the guy who sang "Lost In Love" and "All Out Of Love" while it still stings my '80s music heart. But not knowing the Chicago poet? That should never be a stumper.
Clue selection was not optimal with DD3 hiding and finally Susan found it with 3 clues left.
Anthony: 14300
Erin: 10400
Susan: 6200
$1000?
Susan got it right and remained in third. It's fun to imagine another scenario of going for all of it and it leading to a tiebreaker clue with Erin at the end. Not to be. And Susan or Erin probably would have left money on the table for FJ! wagering even in a 12400 each situation.
The FJ! clue is the kind where it does not matter how long it took me or how confident I was with my response. I wrote the correct five letters and that is what counts. Along the way I had NACL in working off seeing "sodium" and tried to do a letter scramble to spot something. I was close to writing "ranch" since I had three of the letters. Bringing that "H" into play was enough to save me as I realized the Cl in my thinking was not necessary with nothing chloride in the wording. I made my "L" an "H" to have new letters to look at and just before time was out I added the "O" to make something connected with cheese.
As Alex went to Susan and gave her words to the positive for her response it was a very nice realization to know that I got lucky.
Tough break for Anthony keeping up the non-sweep streak that cost him the title. I would think that is one cheese/chip dish he will not have an appetite for for a while.

Re: Monday, October 14, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
With the mention of the Contestant Zone on the weekly poll there is another thing that comes up sometimes. Erin's picture shows a different outfit than what she had on to play today. My guess is the collar had a strobing effect through the camera lens and she had to change into what looked like a dress with Lewis Carroll characters.
Just because someone has on a different outfit between Contestant Zone picture and game play outfit does not always mean that person will win.

I'm a chemist so this was the biggest slam-dunk of any FJ for me in quite a while. I've even imagined that combination of chemical symbols before AND I frequently use sodium citrate for that exact purpose. Why can't they all be like this!?

After a more than 30 minute Internet outage I got to this funny point in the game while archiving it:
On to the DJ! round.
Spoiler
Re: Monday, October 14, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
For some reason, WNEM aired an ad for J! in the first commercial break, which featured a clue from a previous episode.
I assume "dulcet" is a no-go on Speak Softly for $600?
Anyone else think that Bayou for $1,000 was HUGE HUGE HUGE negbait for "beaver"? I've NHO the nutria before, and for me to have NHO an animal is extremely rare.
I just couldn't stay clam in the Louisiana category. Also had catfish for crayfish and Dallas for Houston.
I would literally never think of fishing as a job, so I understand the triple neg there. I, too, had lifeguard.
NHO either song on Love Songs for $400. I consider Whitney Houston auditory torture so I don't want to here them either. Also can't say I've heard of Air Supply either.
Blanking on "vacation" cost me the run in V 8.
All but the DD in Poets Laureate.
Sodium = Na. Cheese melting? Na....... Nacho. That works.
Lach Trash: murmur, Lake Michigan, Carl Sandburg

Re: Monday, October 14, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Coryat 35200
43 R
1 W (but it was a $2000 clue, I also said Superior)
DD 3/3
FJ
Twilight Zone moment of the day: the last Wikipedia article I read before watching the show was Lawrence Ferlinghetti...
Erin crushed it on the music clues. IMHO, that's what won her the game.

3/5 and +$3200 on the music clues taken away leaves Erin with 9200 and still in position to take the game in the FJ! round with Anthony's miss. Erin won for overall better buzzer work while 6W and 2nd place after the DJ! round is not the best path to victory.

She also got "Vacation" for 1200 in the V-8 category, so 4/6. Still, it felt like 6/6 to me... maybe because I barely know anything about music so I'm easily impressed...MarkBarrett wrote: ↑Mon Oct 14, 2019 8:25 pm3/5 and +$3200 on the music clues taken away leaves Erin with 9200 and still in position to take the game in the FJ! round with Anthony's miss. I was looking forward to the clue based on the category. I thought it was going to take some effort to get it, but it ended up being an instaget.

I too, was flumoxed by the use of the word "job" instead of occupation. It only became obvious after Alex gave the answer.TPH wrote: I would literally never think of fishing as a job, so I understand the triple neg there. I, too, had lifeguard.
but I was sure it couldn't possibly be lifeguard. Whichever one guessed that was definately guilty of not staying clam.
Another poorly worded clue (IMO), was the first round DD. "Gives them names of hunters" could have been interpreted as giving names to the (alligators). Plus, there are orginizations that capture the reptiles and relocate them.

The problem is "reverently," which doesn't quite fit. But I think it's close enough.MasterCone wrote: ↑Mon Oct 14, 2019 9:00 pmA fourth for dulcetbluejaylink wrote: ↑Mon Oct 14, 2019 8:58 pmI also had "dulcet"Foretopman wrote: ↑Mon Oct 14, 2019 8:23 pmFWIW, I also said "dulcet"TenPoundHammer wrote: ↑Mon Oct 14, 2019 7:30 pm I assume "dulcet" is a no-go on Speak Softly for $600?
I'm not at all ashamed of my guess of Bill Bojangles Robinson (1878-1949) for "most famous male dancer." Different genre, that's all.
The FJ category was intimidating to me, but NaCHO would have been a snap even without the melting cheese hint.

The state of Louisiana says these reptiles over 4' can be considered a nuisance & will give you the name of a hunter
My problem with it is that I took hunter as a TOM and guessed crocodiles...which I gather don't roam in Louisiana...

And baby makes five! I'm taking points away from everyone because dulcet does not sync with the category, SPEAK SOFTLY. Hushed, muted, murmur and what were the other two? I also had "earth tones" for "muted" so I got dinged twice. And dulcet really means smooth or sweet, but who knows what TPTB woulda done!MasterCone wrote: ↑Mon Oct 14, 2019 9:00 pmA fourth for dulcetbluejaylink wrote: ↑Mon Oct 14, 2019 8:58 pmI also had "dulcet"Foretopman wrote: ↑Mon Oct 14, 2019 8:23 pmFWIW, I also said "dulcet"TenPoundHammer wrote: ↑Mon Oct 14, 2019 7:30 pm I assume "dulcet" is a no-go on Speak Softly for $600?
Sorry, but I don't think Susan was playing to win. She surprised me by going to $1600 in IM PEI, and then surprised me again by making a weak late game wager. Anthony, on the other hand, was hot out of the gate but got burned on melted cheese. Ouch. I've been there (well, not on the show yet) - I mean, sometimes it just doesn't click. Tough break, but Erin played well and she won me over with her smile (and Humpty Dumpty Tweedledee / Tweedledum).
I hate to do this, but Susan reminds me of Brett Somers; Anthony, Adam Scott; and Erin, Jillian Bell
CLOWNS!!! Great story, perfect set-up and punch line, without any creepiness. (Joker, btw, is phenomenal)
