Re: Tuesday, October 22, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Sometimes it seems like challengers smell blood in the water when the champ has a winning total under $10K. Martha and Andre were after the belt from the start and Ryan was quickly playing catch up.
It was almost amazing to get 61 clues today as the board skipping and drawn out clue selections, negs, and TS clues had me expecting the time's up signal to be ahead of clue #30 both times.
The FJ! category had me expecting the range of Swift, Carey, Adele, Whitney and Katy Perry although I did tell myself that if it was old school to be ready for who turned out to the right one. At no point did I have Cher under consideration and even if I did she would have been immediately dismissed.
When I saw the clue I locked in my correct response and was fairly confident I was right as no one else could have those credentials the clue provided.
This seems to be the most relevant previous clue in the Archive on the subject:
6446, aired 2012-10-01 SINGERS & ALBUMS: She's the only artist to have No. 1 albums in 5 consecutive decades, from the 1960s to the 2000s
BADuBois should be able to get it this time.
The sole solve for Martha got her by her -3500 miss on DD3. John Boy is going to love that CLASSICAL MUSIC category.

@#$#**! I was flipping a coin between the two responses the contestants ended up giving and guessed the wrong one.
The correct answer... I have a bad habit of always underestimating her accomplishments. It seemed inconceivable to me that she has had 30 Top 10 albums, but yup.

The Baby Boomer curse strikes again...younger contestants might not realize that Cher couldn't have been hitting the top 10 as early as 1963. And what's up with Ryan's FJ wager?

This feels obvious, but I might as well codify it: Poll request for Cher.

Ya, think? It's always fine to ask to make sure I don't overlook a plausible poll option.OntarioQuizzer wrote: ↑Tue Oct 22, 2019 11:29 am This feels obvious, but I might as well codify it: Poll request for Cher.

Cher's career started in the early 60s, so it's not that outlandish. "I Got You Babe" came out in 1965.

Maybe not, for someone who didn't grow up in that era. I think you'd be hard pressed to find a boomer confused enough to imagine that Cher's success pre-dated the Beatles in the US.

I totally disregarded the Billboard / album sales angle on this one and thought 'Who else could be the #1 Female Musical Legend other than Aretha Franklin?'

Re: Tuesday, October 22, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Never considered Cher, but I agree that anyone with a good sense of music history would have ruled her out on the dates. Pondered for a brief moment about Aretha but realized quickly that (a) her acting credits were too scarce and insubstantial to justify the slash-occupation and (b) the clue was clearly written about someone still living. After that it was just a matter of pulling the name associated with the picture in my head. I had to get to "Babs" before I could get to her full name.

Re: Tuesday, October 22, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
What surprises me is that it wasn't even close. Cher as a solo act has had only 6 top ten albums, none before 1989. But she did have 12 top ten singles. And a duet with Beavis and Butthead, which is some kind of achievement.

Comment on one of the comma clues:
Spoiler
A serial comma is commonly known as a "Harvard comma" as well as an "Oxford comma"... either should be acceptable, right?

Re: Tuesday, October 22, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
The Monday thread staying busy with comments about yesterday's FJ! clue has me laughing as some of the people have not even got to Tuesday's yet. Cher is going to be getting more action.

Anyone else try Dolly Parton?
Re: Tuesday, October 22, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
I recognized every name in British Prime Ministers, but knowing only the names and not their relevance, I went only 1/5. Should've gotten Thatcher, but had a brainfart and the only famous British woman I could think of was QEII.
Yet another game of 4/5s for me: blanked on ornith-, and couldn't pull "regeneration" in time. However, I ran "B" List.
I thought "printing press" was not well pinned on Comma for $200. "Translator" made more sense to me there.
I've heard of "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" but never pinned it to a composer. No hope on the rest of the category.
There actually WAS a "London bridge"? No guess on the rest.
0/5 in Bridges and Classical.
1963? Too early for Parton, way too early for Reba. Cher didn't seem to quite fit either. Also seemed too early for Streisand, and I couldn't tell you the first thing about her musical career. Didn't think she was prolific enough to have had even one top-10 album. Just threw up my hands in defeat and left a blank screen, which I figured was more correct than Streisand anyway.
Lach trash: God, comma splice

Somehow this was instaget (1963 + singer-actress brought Streisand to mind immediately), even though her having 30+ top 10 albums is news to me, and rather surprising. 30!? *shrug*
Also kinda surprised that Cher is nowhere close, given how popular she's been for so long.
