On another topic of discussion, I have never heard of any of those terms for the comma (Oxford, splice, whatever). My teachers referred to it by the generic "comma blunder."
It's not a blunder, it's a necessity. Why would you use commas for an entire list except (suddenly and inexplicably) the last one?

Consider the following:

"I am so grateful to my parents, my sister and God."

That sounds like a really messed up family tree. Or how about this one:

"Yesterday for lunch I had a sandwich, chips and mac and cheese."

Like nails on a chalkboard to me....
Not to get all religious on everybody, but shouldn't God come first? Put Him first and there's no ambiguity...
As to the 2d - you may not like how it looks - I don't either, for the record - but it's not ambiguous. Seems like overload for lunch tho...
why? that lunch consists of 3 things...seems light

Mac and Me. Or should I say Mac, and Me?

I'm always surprised at how much I "don't know" things that I really do know. I had tip-of-the-tongue syndrome with "Reefer Madness" - I knew it, and I knew I had seen the film version of the musical version of the film (!?) with Christian Campbell, but I couldn't get the title in time. Still haven't seen the "original", though.

Ok everybody, let's gather around Mr. Grouch and sing "People" to him until he feels better.
Or better yet, have Celine Dion do it.
i love celine dion...my 2nd favourite musical act after cannibal corpse

Not ambiguous? Were the chips a crushed topping on the mac n cheese? (Not a horrible combination, BTW.) Were they a separate side dish? Is this mystery food a combination of chips and macaroni with some kind of cheese as a separate dish (sounding more on the horrible side)? Are you British, implying that the chips are rectangular bits of fried potato, or are you American, making the chips thinly sliced circular bits of fried potato?

I think there's plenty of ambiguity there.
OK, if you worry that your readers will be unfamiliar with the dish (?), you've provided another choice to set it off - mac n cheese. Whether they're British or American chips is not cleared up by the comma placement...

My wife is a thrift shop fanatic, so I spend a good amount of time in the vinyl racks of Goodwill et al. It's comical how hard the recording industry was trying to sell Barbra Streisand and Barry Manilow as sex symbols during the '70s.

floridagator wrote: Tue Oct 22, 2019 9:36 pm I ran classical music, but at least one of the reasons that the contestants had trouble with it was that they attacked it from the bottom up. It would have been much more straightforward to play from the top down, as the game is designed to be played.
How would that have helped in this instance? The clues weren't connected in any meaningful way.

In the studio yes. At home, I wouldn't have written down anything if I had a gun to my head, because I was ten billion percent certain that my only choice was wrong wrong wrong.

Practicing doing something 180 degrees different from what you plan to do during the real game seems like a winning strategy.
