To loosely quote scripture, "Come and let us pay homage." Wink Martindale attended earlier this week and today it looks like another famous person was in the house although my degree of certainty is a little less than when Wink was spotted:
Spoiler
Image
Alex announced the upcoming ToC on Monday and the message is the same. James and the other 14 players. Well, no matter what, at least two of the "other 14" will be in the finals.

For the FJ! clue I matched Alex in knowing the correct response today while I have missed my fair share of Bible FJ! clues over the years.

The common miss that already has company on this board was predictable although it was unfortunate to see all of the players go that way. The wagering? The board comments about wanting another superchamp woman player cannot happen with that kind of betting.

Andrew says thank you while I suspect Steve would have loved the FJ! clue to have played yesterday instead.

7x vs. 4x vs. 5x on Monday to get the ToC going. Can't wait and fingers crossed national events behave themselves 9:30 CT each weekday morning.

Welp, I guessed the same thing all the contestants did. I can see a poll question brewing...

Wow, I went for the negbait(is that the right term?) too. Any chance of an abbreviation glossary for this forum?

There's going to be some controversy over today's FJ. The producers' desired answer is NOT a denomination; it's a movement. That movement (the producers' desired answer) is present within a number of denominations, and there are a handful of distinct denominations that identify themselves as being within that movement. A very badly written FJ.

Maybe a poll question could be: 'I had the same answer as the contestants until I read the second half of the clue.'

I wonder how high Pentecost rises on the 'inside baseball' scale re Christianity. I wonder what an equivalent event or term might be for other major religions, and would J! contestants be expected to know those?

ETA: Of course, there is always 'Goliath of Gath'.

Yes, I think this clue can appropriately be classified as negbait

I don't think Pentecost is too obscure a concept for FJ personally. I know there will be complaints because some people want religion to be off limits (IIRC several people on here complained about Billy Graham being a FJ answer) but it is a major aspect of the biblical narrative.

Not a particularly great game to close off with before the TOC. Some tough clues, and a poorly worded FJ leading to another small payday.

At least we have the TOC starting next week. Definitely can't wait to see King James himself again!

I'm not a particularly religious person myself, but Biblical stuff is part of the game, and I understand that not knowing it puts me at a disadvantage (just like not knowing Justin Bieber or whatever else the whippersnappers listen to these days).

IMO, it is not. Negbait tempts a half-informed player to ring in and neg with the obvious response, and has an overall detrimental effect to the show because it tends to cause gun-shyness, thus silence, thus less entertainment for the home viewer. It also seems unfair to its immediate victim because his incomplete knowledge caused him to lose ground to two opponents who perhaps didn't know enough to be wrong.

In FJ, though, laying off is not an option (unless you didn't bet, when your guess is irrelevant). If you don't know the answer they want, you are going to neg regardless of what else you say or don't say. Thus the "negbait" concept does not apply.

For the regard, since I'm here already, I missed with Adventist and made a conscious decision to be no more specific. As for whether this was a bad clue, I don't know enough right now to state an informed opinion, and don't have enough battery remaining to inform myself and weigh in right now.
I'm smart and I want respect.

Okay, but this seems like an instance where a player might know the answer they want, given a little more thought about it, only that little extra thought doesn't come because the player latches on to the "obvious" answer like a gator to the limb of an intoxicated golfer. I've never heard anyone say "negbait" doesn't apply to Final Jeopardy!, but as an abstruse academic distinction, I can dig it, I guess.

7th-Day Adventist refers to something completely different and has nothing to do with the event mentioned in the clue. The only commonality is the word "day." However, the right answer requires a pretty high level knowledge of both the Bible + modern Christianity. The thing that almost threw me is that there's not an actual organization named Pentecostal, but rather many denominations that follow the general doctrines of Pentecostalism (Assembly of God being the largest, I think). So I almost said Pentecostal Holiness (a tiny group) before realizing that's too esoteric for Jeopardy and just went for the obvious.

Absolutely.

I've never heard of Pentecostalism.

Instaget, but I am a Pentecostal.

Over 250 million of us and outnumber Adventists 10 to 1, so while that is a good guess I wouldn't call it negbait or the right answer inside baseball.

"Day the holy spirit descended upon the apostles" = Pentecost -> Pentecostal, done. Another easy Frid...

...huh. This is why I'll never be a clue writer for J!, I have no ability to gauge difficulty. I would not have predicted a TS, or the early responses to this thread. The weekend poll should be fascinating. I'll let others hash out 'denomination' vs 'movement.'

The wagering, on the other hand, was entirely predictable. I often call out the '2nd place suicide wager' (Christine was stuck in Stratton's so it didn't apply tonight), but maybe it's the 3rd place players I should focus on. Why Jennifer, why?? *sigh*

The TOC awaits. FINALLY.
