What a nightmare for Rob and I would not wish that on any J! player other than perhaps Aaron Rodgers.

The clue with the reversal was BEFORE & LAUGHTER $800: Biblical first man’s donation to make his mate that ultimately turns into a term for a joke

Rachel got to Adam's rib and Rob made it Adam's ribbing. Alex wanted Adam's rib tickler. I took a neg with Adam's rib buster.

Rob was too good for his own good in finding DD2 and DD3 as he lost 5400 of his own score and then 2K more of house money. Credit to Rob to at least make it to the FJ! round as he needed both clue 29 and 30 to do it.

The FJ! category had me ready for a race around the map. The clue narrowed the search to a manageable number. I wrote the correct response quickly and it left me too much time to keep thinking and I switched to CT. My thinking for the switch was college towns or Patriots home was going to have a place of decent population while I did not know enough about CT cities other than the capital.

Nice game by Rachel to put herself in contention for a WC spot. It will take a few days to see if her wager needs to be revisited.

Dhruv was the best of the three and earned his comfortable seat in the audience to relax for the rest of the taping day.

Opus will be doing another poll as there was a lot of material available for the 4th podium, unfortunately.

Can anyone confirm whether I'm the first to sequentially and spectacularly crater on DD2+DD3?

On the whole, I attribute this painful performance to an equal mix of nerves and over-caffeination. (not to mention a pair of VERY worthy opponents)

Fritz Holznagel's ebook re: the buzzer is certainly pro-caffeine, but in the heat of the green room I chose to ignore his Chapter 6 caveat, "Binging or using an IV drip probably isn't a good idea..." as I consumed ~400mg of caffeine shortly before heading onstage.

I was a little worried when Glenn had me rewrite my R :) b because it was a little too shaky.
And then he had me rewrite it again...
And one last time did the trick. eek!

Missing that very first question, in a wheelhouse category, put me on my heels from the start. (this chemistry major saw "explosion-producing" and pictured alkali metals being tossed into lakes)

But the moment that really haunts me was the "pick out this highlighted African nation" clue.
I swear to you, the very last thing I looked at before leaving the hotel room that morning was THAT EXACT SPOT of the map of Africa. I went so far as to circle it and coin the mnemonic, "BBBurundi is BBBelow Rwanda."

But that map comes up in a clue 4 hrs later and I clearly recall taking the time to ponder, "Hmmmm, Rwanda or Burundi?" before deciding to buzz. More than enough time for Rachel Dhruv to beat me to the punch.

But this venting is not meant to obscure the undeniable fact that I had a ball up there, and it truly was an honor and a joy to be able to play the game again.

p.s. if anyone's interested in a buzzer-practicing rig, drop me a line. I'll give you a good deal. :)

edited to correct my flawed memory! (another reason I lost, clearly...)

I only have regular play Daily Doubles tracked since October 2004, but:
http://www.j-archive.com/showgame.php?game_id=5895 saw a player go from 1000 to -1000 on back-to-back Daily Doubles (with a pair of $1000 wagers)

That's the closest to your situation, and I don't have tournament Daily Doubles tracked on my spreadsheet.

Spoiler
I'm expecting this FJ to poll above 90%. Without the New England TOM, you would have had to rule out Virginia, PA, and NY (but all three should be easy to eliminate). CT did cross my mind because I thought "this is the TOC, maybe it's not the obvious answer" but then I remembered yesterday.

At least they're keeping the playing field level so far by not sticking anyone with devilishly hard FJs.

I found the use of the term 'urban places' in the FJ! clue a bit confusing. Are we talking just about city populations, or are we talking 'urban area' or Metropolitan Statistical Area (many of which cross state boundaries)?
Spoiler
Both Worcester and Springfield, MA (+ CT) show up in the top 100 of the latter rankings.

Let's go with Ferkins.

Rather than jumping right to Great Expectations (if they'd mentioned "Pip" I would've gotten this...) I went from ward to orphans to Oliver Twist to some unholy blend of Fagin and Sikes.

Thought of small states which might have only 1 big city, instead of states that would have been large enough to have many. Hit on Rhode Island.

I'm proud of you, Rob.

So how often does a total like 13601 make the WC cut? Seemed like an overly-conservative wager.

ToCs only:

2017: 12000 & 11500 wildcards - 9000 alternate
2015: 15000 & 14000 wildcards - 12800 alternate
2014: 11600 & 9100 wildcards - 7599 alternate
2013: 13000 & 14000 wildcards - 12000 alternate
2011: 16003 & 6012 wildcards - 2400 alternate
2010: 11500 & 4999 wildcards - 4700 alternate
2009: 10600 & 9900 wildcards - 9600 alternate
2007: 12000 & 11400 wildcards - 10600 alternate
2006: 14000 & 11000 wildcards - 10799 alternate
2004: 10600 & 4000 wildcards - 3500 alternate
2003: 0 & 0 wildcards - 0 alternate (Scores after DJ! mattered)

Rachel's 13601 is enough for a wildcard in all but 2015 from the most recent examples and at least an alternate for the semis (as meaningless as that is) every time.

That was then and this is now. Rachel either makes it or like many others before her who got the FJ! clue right and did not bet enough gets to play the "What If" game.

And that was the only reason I didn't go with a joke/poignant answer in today's FJ.

Reddit had a question about the last time a College champ won a QF match.

I read there but don't post so will answer here.

Terry O'Shea 2014
Before that
Vinita Kailasanath 2004
Pam Mueller 2001
Scott Gillispie 1991

Dhruv would be the first to win the QF match and then make the finals.

Looking ahead to Friday, teachers in the ToC:
Colby Burnett and Jason Sterlacci won their QF games and all others have not made it to the semis.

Caffeine free, me.

I suspected immediately that Massachusetts was the correct answer for final jeopardy. The capitals of Vermont New Hampshire and Connecticut are not even the largest city in their respective States. I can't believe Portland Maine is in the top 100 of population. That left Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Leaving aside the question of whether Providence is in the top 100 today, I knew there weren't that many places in Rhode Island that could be that high in population in 1840.

Worcester and Springfield aren't large enough to be in the top 100. The suburbs of Boston are pretty much hemmed-in by their 18th century borders.

One of Rob's answers made me laugh out loud. After the disaster that was Double Jeopardy, I can't even remember which one. Yes i do. After seeing it in the poll, it was metric system. Invented in the dark ages? Lol. Rob was the only one of that Trio that I remembered from regular play.
