Nice job again by the CBS station in Cleveland, MS to break away from the hearings to air J! at the normal time.

Francois once again was skunked in the opening segment. Ouch, though he gets $50,000 for his troubles.

After Emma's big move on DD2 she went to CLASSIC AMERICAN PLAYS $800 to finish off the 2nd -5th clues there. Fine and makes sense category-wise, though DD2 was already in a 2nd box placement.

Emma got it right and then made the mistake of going to JIM CLASS for $1200. Wrong category in my opinion to find DD3. James had control and moved down to $1600. I was shaking my head at the selection. Emma got it right and asked for the $2000 clue which James got right.

James then did the right thing to move over to "R"CHITECTURE $1600 as I fully expected the DD there or the $2000 box with $1200 already gone. James found DD3 and bet the big 8615 to try to lock the tournament. He not only missed the clue, but missed it with a guess that did not fit the category. Tsk tsk.

Going into the FJ! round:
Emma had a max of 43200 (+26400) for 69,600
James had a minimum of 17785 (+49326) for 67,111

That meant Emma had a chance to take the whole thing. James was having none of that as he solved the FJ! clue just like Francois and Emma did as well.

James will play J! again and so will Emma. It's only a matter of when.

I joined the players in solving the FJ! clue by taking a guess and not with any real history/geography knowledge. I did a Hammer favorite for sound-alike to get one country and then picked where to go for a nearby dispute associated with the time period. I'll gladly take 40% for the ToC over 30% though both disappointing.

Monday brings back regular play with Andrew Thomson & his 2 wins ($30,800)

Code: Select all

Francois: 1800 1600 3400 5000
James: 49326 17785 67111 84896
Emma: 26400 21600 48000 69600
James: Bet $2,490 to cover Emma.
Emma: Francois can't reach you and you have to get FJ right to win. Bet it all (or at least more than $16,621) to clear James if he misses).
Francois: You're superlocked into third. Bet what you want.

Congrats to James on getting his revenge! What an AMAZING two-day final!

James and Emma both gave easily some of the most dominant TOC performances of all time. It truly was an epic battle all the way to the end, and by far some of the most exciting gameplay ever to come out of Jeopardy.

With the ToC over I like to revisit the three tiers. In my opinion anyone who makes the finals is automatically Gold. Anyone who makes the semis cannot be Bronze. From there it's open to interpretation and one's preference. If someone wants to put the QF winners who did not make finals into Gold I do get it.

I'll go with:

Gold: James, Emma, Francois, Lindsey, Kyle
Silver: Dhruv, Eric, Gilbert, Rachel, Steven
Bronze: Alan, Anneke, Josh, Rob, Ryan

It's easy to make a case to put Eric in Bronze and switch him with Josh or even Anneke for leading her QF game. I considered Gilbert for Gold and keeping Kyle in Silver where I originally had him.

The ToC kind of went according to Hoyle though some plot twists in the early QF games that shook things up.

If the ToC was replayed I would except a different mix of the 9 in the semis. It's one try though and it seemed to be mostly advantage to the more recent players.

Congrats to James on his ToC victory (he became the first 10+ time champion to win a ToC), and congrats to Emma as well for a well-fought rematch.

As far as the producers inviting either one back, I'd say they're definitely going to invite James back, especially if they want to match him against Ken and Brad (if they do I hope it's a second million-dollar masters tournament and not an exhibition match).

Now, I also saw a post on Reddit about whether the producers should bring him back to regular play, which made me laugh because that's not going to happen. The only way for James to surpass Ken is regarding to all-time winnings; he would have to compete in a special tournament in which the top prize is $1M and he wins the whole thing.

For those who wondered (like I did) what about Ken? Wikipedia:
Notably, 2004 74-day champion Ken Jennings gave up his bid in the 2006 Tournament of Champions in favor of an automatic finals bye in 2005's Ultimate Tournament of Champions, and therefore never competed in the regular tournament.

I was going to mention that the producers could've just had Ken compete in the Season 22 ToC instead of holding the UToC and giving him a bye to the finals. In that way he would've become the first 10+ time champion to win a ToC.

Gilbert really impressed in his semifinal match. But I couldn't justify Gold for anyone in his trash-filled QF. Many boardies, including yours truly, won that game (admittedly from the couch and not under the lights) from the fourth podium.

There were not a lot of surprises in that game. I'm glad it's over because all day I've been worried about getting spoiled on it somewhere on the internet. Some loser in Kankakee or some darn place puts up a web post or worse yet at a online news story and doesn't realize that most of the country doesn't see it until the 7-hour Eastern Time. And I really feel for the people on the West Coast.

When James blew The Daily Double, I really thought Emma would have an opening. But not a big enough opening. I got Final Jeopardy with no problem. The clues were obviously going for Japan. Then it was simply a matter of knowing who Japan had a long-standing dispute with.

I wasn't feeling a lot of suspense after they revealed Francois and found he had gotten it right.
I'd rather cuddle then have sex. If you're into grammar, you'll understand.

Now this is a way to end a tournament. I thought James had hit an Achilles heel moment by forgetting the category on that one DD, but he managed to hang on.

====

All but $1,000 in Nifty '50s and Snails.

"Liquor" BMSes to volume? Can they just get rid of the BMS entirely since it always, always, ALWAYS misleads the contestants? I thought they wanted a type of liquor.

Not unexpected, but I was 0/30 on the DJ! board.

No guess on FJ!

I really wish they would. They are completely inconsistent in its application.

53 R
DD: 3/3
FJ:
LT: Abalone, Volume, (Regency), James Renwick, Hiroshima

Misses:
Sitcoms $1000- Knew Beaver, couldn't name the other one.
Classic American Plays $800- Have heard of Adam Driver but never would have recognized him.
Classic American Plays $2000
Jim Class $1600
Before, During, and After $2000- Couldn't get Chayefsky, but I have heard of him.
Movie Foreign Cities $1200 and $1600

I am probably the first person to notice that James is the third ToC winner in a row to have his debut episode in April.

Great finish!
All three deserved to be in the finals. Is this the first time in a TOC finals that the qualifier who played the most games faced two qualifiers who played the fewest?
I had my worst game in ages; "Before, During, and After" ate me alive. But I did go 7/10 on FJ's this tournament, compared to 5/10 in 2017 and 1/10 in 2015.
Hoping for a third lap

I find that way too often, it misleads contestants. As I said, I whiffed because I thought they wanted a type of liquor, which may have also been what froze up the three onstage. I've also seen it turn into a game of "guess the synonym" where all three give close but not quite precise enough synonyms of the word that was BMSed.

Why not, and what else to do? It would be hard to justify deeming "liquor" wrong. Technically, a more helpful prompt would have been "be more general", but that would have given away too much.

Congrats to James on the win! And to Emma and Francois for making the finals! It was a great game to close out the tournament.

I had Russia on the final and picked China over Japan for the second country.

I got Regency after a bit. Not sure but they might’ve buzzed me.

Weak clue for FJ! Clearly Japan is one country and Russia is a fairly straight shot. No magic there. No pizazz!

I appreciate the harder material and intensity of play in the tournaments, but I’m glad this one is over. Next!

Born yesterday comes up again in recent Jeopardy! history, so I better look that one up.
