Which is why Japan can’t sign a treaty with the country it was at war with, since it no longer exists.

Coryat: $26,400 (37R, 0W)
DD: 3/3
FJ:
LT: Regency (DD)
Finally got to watch it, but very annoyed that I was spoiled by ESPN. I guess I should’ve known they’d have something on it, but it didn’t really register at 11pm after emptying my brain out at trivia. (The last category was questions James got wrong during his run; I saw every game and STILL fell into two of the same negbait traps he did!)
Disappointed that I missed Jesus of Montreal, I remember that was a big deal here in Canada when it won Best Foreign Film in 1989.

Near enough instaget on FJ
Avoided the negbait on ______ mi Amour. For 2K, it's not going to be Paris.
Wut's Being Measured is a good exhibit for taking the categories in order.

Actually I thought Hiroshima mon amour was overvalued at 2K, because the film is very well known (certainly more so than Jesus de Montréal). I don't know why you'd consider Paris as negbait, because there's no film called Paris mon amour.

So I went with Japan/S. Korea for this FJ, and I'm still not sure why the right response was so obvious...
As far as I know, the Russo-Japanese War was over in 1905....I didn't know they still had territorial beefs...
Whereas Japan had occupied Korea for 35 years until the end of WW2, and the exploitation of Korean "comfort women" by the Japanese has festered between the countries for decades...Seemed like land could just add to the issues.

Because the clue writers offered a French translation of the portion of the title given, French is spoken in France, and Paris is the capital of France.Mathew5000 wrote: ↑Sat Nov 16, 2019 8:07 pmActually I thought Hiroshima mon amour was overvalued at 2K, because the film is very well known (certainly more so than Jesus de Montréal). Korea lacked sovereignty during WWII, and South Korea is a postwar creation, so clearly would not have been a party to a WWII peace treaty.davey wrote: ↑Sat Nov 16, 2019 8:10 pm So I went with Japan/S. Korea for this FJ, and I'm still not sure why the right response was so obvious...

And Russia took the Kurils as their share of the victors' spoils. Though their invasion of Manchuria did coincide with the Bomb droppings, it also exactly fulfilled their agreement at Yalta to declare war on Japan within three months of Germany's defeat.
I'm smart and I want respect.

Re: Friday, November 15, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Finally got through this episode - and totally not surprised at the result. James cracked the door open for Emma, but slammed it shut in FJ!. I'm in the "Japan/South Korea" crowd, and Russia in retrospect seems SO obvious. I knew it was geographically close...I just went to the country closest to the southern tip of Japan, not the northern.
The liquor BMS seemed really, really weird to me, but I guess you could say that they would accept "volume of liquor" as an response, so in that sense, it IS a little more specific than just "liquor" alone. But the expected correct response is "volume", which, yeah, I would have been able to get if the categories had been done in order.
What time of day do they release the sixth clues? It would be nice if they did it earlier than at least 7 PM ET, so play-at-homers can hunt for categories with special rules or quirks. It'd also be cool if they gave at least some of those clues - particularly ones in problematic categories - to the contestants right before the round, so they could prepare. Then again, it's a good deterrent for DD hunters. You can hunt for a DD - but the fee is not understanding a category.
I can't see how anyone's brain works fast enough for before/during/after. Any hints? I finally figured out to start with "during" and work outwards, but still - three responses in that short of a time, many of which are multi-word? I blanked on the category even though I definitely could have scored on 3 of them given more time.
I am looking forward to "plain old stupid J!" next week. My brain hurts.

I have always imagined Alex would end his career with some sort of super-TOC with the top 15 (or maybe more) players of all time.
With his health being an issue we don’t know if he will be able to host S37. So putting together a mega tournament for this season may be difficult. So how about ending this season with a weeklong total point affair with Ken, Brad, and James?

In a normal game Brad bets $601, although Rick might well have not made the MSB.MarkBarrett wrote: ↑Sat Nov 16, 2019 12:43 am2001 ToC Finals 1:
Tad Carithers: 3300-2000=1300
Brad Rutter: 6000-3500=2500
Rick Knutsen: 6500-3500=3000
Has Brad lost to a human or not?
Pick an idiom for wanting to pin a loss (whether in quotes or not) on James for Day 2:

Weirdly, I got the J!6 one that morning on only audio, then went o-fer on the ones in the episode with the text in front of me. Usually I can get a decent number of them. I try to quickly latch onto whichever one of the three clues I figure out first, then go from there. That probably isn't too helpful...talkingaway wrote: ↑Sun Nov 17, 2019 12:17 am

- went all-in from a close second (then won when the leader bet $0 and got FJ right)
- bet from third to get (if right) $1 ahead of where first place would land if covering second by a dollar and missing FJ, ignoring that second place had a crush lead over him and would fall to a higher total covering him (then won on a sole get when second overwagered)
With the 2001 ToC F1 scores before FJ in a regular game, TS victory should belong to second place, but I think Brad might have squandered that opportunity.

Nobody but Emma can say "I had more money than James Holzhauer at the end of two out of three matches"
It would be just a little bit of a stretch to say a shorter version, "I beat James Holzhauer two out of three games."

This is one of the biggest differences I see between James and the other prominent J! gambler Alex Jacob (who IMO should also be in the mix when "top J! players" is being discussed). Alex's bets were always in my recollection well-calculated and strategic.jeff6286 wrote: ↑Sat Nov 16, 2019 5:09 am Agree there was no reason for Emma not to bet it all, Francois is not even in the conversation so she had literally nothing to lose. And also agree there was no need for James to bet more than the minimum needed, don’t have the numbers handy but it was $2500 or so. But in all likelihood neither of those moves was going to be costly and that indeed turned out to be the case.
One of the strangest things about James’ entire run is for someone who in every other aspect of the game is playing a cool, calculated, heartless killer, the absurd insistence on wagers with personal significance, even at times to the detriment of winning, is a bit baffling.
Not that this was a mathematical certainly at the time, but if he bets five dollars on the last daily double, he has the tourney won before final.

Sorry if this has already been answered, but is $76,923 the record for highest two-day total in the finals of a TOC? And where would Emma's $65,000 rank?
