Beth has found 5/6 DDs and converted 4/5 of them. In one hour of taping time she has made about 3 years' worth of receptionist pay as Alex mentioned that yesterday's win was twice what she makes in a year.

Ian's 6200 felt like about half of it came from sports clues. He was lucky to get the $2000 for second as Julie bet the farm to fall to third.

Allow me to join the contestants with a miss on the FJ! clue. In 30 seconds there is no excuse for me at home not to think of the right thing. The players have a better excuse being in studio conditions and the game already decided.

Even though the clue had 1932 I still found myself having to knock away December 1941 things that kept popping into my head. Keying on the year then had me circling things around the Great Depression. I understood I needed two short things though could not get there in time.

It's at the point when I tell myself I'm good enough to get 7 FJ! clues in row right and silly enough to let a gettable 8th one fly by.

It's a great FJ! clue for the instaget crowd as if it occurs to you it's a slam dunk. I'll be in the riff raff room with Beth, Julie, & Ian while looking for company from others here.

I'm surprised it took me twenty seconds or so to get the FJ...it seems obvious in retrospect. How many other famous phrases were associated with FDR, after all? Also surprised that it was a triple stumper.

One other thing that I had to dismiss during think time for having one syllable was "chat" while "fireside" ended that detour.

Coryat 35200 (45 R, 4 W)
DD 3/3
FJ

LT: 9000 (fourth-podium victory!)

On this clue...
Spoiler
More than 950,000 square miles: this sea that touches Africa & Asia, among others

I said "Arabian Sea" and counted myself wrong. However, it is greater than 950,000 sq mi and touches Asia and Africa. Does the "among others" keep me from being able to check the box?

I doubt they'd have given it to you, but I don't think their intended answer (touching only ONE other continent as it does) justifies the wording, either.
I'm smart and I want respect.

For some reason, my Coryat scores have gone off a cliff again. I'm barely 50% of my average the last few days. Am I just hitting bad boards or something?

====

Poll request on Deepfake. I've been all over the Internet and never heard of it.

Biggest ocean? Could be Atlantic or Pacific, I see no way to narrow it down, nor any trick to remember it. I went 0/5.

Heisman I had down as 0/5 before any clues were revealed.

However, I ran the Eggs category.

Also 0/5 in Musical Quotes and Meeting God.

What was the TOM for Henry VIII or football in the top box?

"Two monosyllables" + FDR led me nowhere. All I could think of was "big stick" but that didn't seem right. Even if "New Deal" came to mind, I would have rejected it because in my brain "deal" is two syllables (dee-uhl).

How did this episode frustrate me? Let me count the ways.

Playing from the top down/No DD hunting
Julie picking the only clue from the nine left guaranteed not to hold the last DD
Beth not wagering $4801 on the last DD to go for the lockout with two clues left (I would have fainted had she done so)
Beth wagering a laughable amount on a 2nd row DD
Julie's FJ wager
Ian's FJ wager
Beth's FJ wager
Random guessing on Sea of Japan
Paris in American Cathedrals
FSU being accepted

I think I lost count. Happy Thanksgiving.

Add Pocahontas to the count? That's the one that had me laughing.

Coryat: $31,600 (42R, 1W)
DD: 2/3
FJ:
LT: search engine, US/UK, Saudi Arabia/South Africa, European Union, New Orleans (DD)

Weirdly, I did very well on the bottom row (9/12) and terribly on row 4 (4/12). I was stunned that FJ was a triple stumper, it came right away and I never thought it could be anything else.

I said web crawler for search engine, looking it up left me pretty confident it would be accepted, so I counted it. Thoughts?

I also went for the Life of Brian negbait, clearly it’s been far too long since I’ve seen Holy Grail

FSU is a pretty standard abbreviation for Florida State, almost (but not quite) as universally used as MIT for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Apart from that, I agree with you.

Another game in which "being of a certain age" helped, I believe.

TS/LT on Cyclotron ( I learned about that in Jr. High when it was still a relatively new invention) and Squanto (which I imagine is no longer taught at all). Also (though not a TS) the Scantron, which has gone the way of the mimeograph and microfiche.

Not a juggernaut job by the champ, but compared to this pair of opponents she looked like one.

And seriously, folks? New Deal another TS? No one? Anyone? Bueller?

So am I the only one who doesn't think of "deal" as a one-syllable word?

I'm curious too. I was really surprised to see this one TS. I thought the whole internet was going hysterical over deepfake technology and how we're at or almost at the point where video can be produced that undetectably makes anyone appear to say or do anything. This being the internet, the big thing that's worrying/exciting people is the possibility of cheap celebrity porn. Anyone's head on the body of an actress/actor who works for less than scale.
