I said "What is the Rhône" in my best Bill Murray deadpan at the appropriate moment:

Then I burst out laughing when the very next clue called for "What are the Finger Lakes?" Sadly there was no follow-up for Mexico or Titicaca.

I'll just say to you and the others that went with Austria, I'm glad I didn't think of that. I might well have switched from my initial thought of Monaco on the strength of Conan the Barbarian. This Is Kirk! wrote: ↑Sat Dec 07, 2019 2:15 pm Despite the word "history" in the FJ clue I was think the inference was that the country is associated with a current movie star, so I went with Arnold thinking that was the barbarian tie-in.

Watching the clip, the other people seem very surprised and impressed that he knew the Finger Lakes. But he was in central Pennsylvania, which isn't all that far from the Finger Lakes. They shouldn't have been surprised nor impressed that he knew that one.opusthepenguin wrote: ↑Sat Dec 07, 2019 5:13 pm I said "What is the Rhône" in my best Bill Murray deadpan at the appropriate moment:

"Racket science" had a pretty obvious clue, and Alex did say all responses began with an R. I think someone would have gotten it. And I, for one, would have gotten rickets science if I'd seen the $400 already.MSTieScott wrote: ↑Sat Dec 07, 2019 1:23 pm To assess the difficulty of the sports category: I know next to nothing about sports and I got the four non–Daily Double clues right. I knew what the Daily Double was going for, and the only reason I got it wrong was because I couldn't remember exactly how many people were on a football team and said "13." (Of course, I also blurted out "KBG" like a dummy later on, so maybe I just have a problem with precision.)
I liked the rocket science category -- it was silly fun. Better suited for the first round than the second, I concede, but I still enjoyed it. I like a little bit of levity in my Jeopardy!.
Exactly. Everybody stands and stares at the first clue, Alex clarifies the conceit of the category, and nobody's sad because it was the lowest amount on the board. I have absolutely no problem with the occasional category that punishes the contestants for not starting at the top.talkingaway wrote: ↑Sat Dec 07, 2019 12:13 pm And, honestly, Alex - was that $400 clue really going to help if you didn't know the category format? "Racket science" isn't a thing. The only thing it does is save $800.
Since I seem to be the only person who looked it up...
After the collapse of the Western Roman Empire in 476, Monaco was ravaged by Saracens and barbarian tribes. After the Saracens were expelled in 975, the depopulated area was reclaimed by the Ligurians.

"Colorful" would be a reductive word to apply to the histories of Germany and Austria... A cozy little place like Monaco, no problem...

Incidentally, 42 is not a number that Jackie Robinson wore while at UCLA...seaborgium wrote: ↑Sat Dec 07, 2019 2:53 amI knew Jackie Robinson was 42 because I'm an Angeleno who's not completely blind to sports...
...but 42 is now the number most associated with him (by far), so it made the most sense for UCLA to retire that number.

It was the "website" reference that pretty much put us in the present. Why are they hawking a 25 year dead American heritage? I spent a couple hours there in the '80s and of course visited the Grand Casino looking for James Bond. Ironically, the table limits on the main floor were less than even downtown Vegas - very much a low roller place. They might have been playing for quatloos or blood diamonds upstairs, but I think there was 5 dollar roulette and quarter slots. This Is Kirk! wrote: ↑Sat Dec 07, 2019 2:15 pm Despite the word "history" in the FJ clue I was think the inference was that the country is associated with a current movie star, so I went with Arnold thinking that was the barbarian tie-in.

As far as I can tell, the only trace of barbarians in Monaco today is someone entering the casino without wearing a tuxedo.

one can be blind to sports and still get that one...i mean they made a movie about him with the title of "42"seaborgium wrote: ↑Sat Dec 07, 2019 2:53 amI knew Jackie Robinson was 42 because I'm an Angeleno who's not completely blind to sportsxxaaaxx wrote: ↑Sat Dec 07, 2019 12:57 amAs a huge sports nut, it's hard to judge clue difficulty, and if sports is just a complete black hole category for you then they're all hard obviousy. I'd say that "identify the team Derek Jeter played for" and "identify the hockey legend known as "the great one"" were probably easy, and "identify Jackie Robinson's number and "here's a picture of Mike Ditka" were probably medium. Knowing that football fans -- and especially Seahawks fans -- are called "the 12th man" was one I would be surprised if a non-football fan got right.Charis wrote: ↑Fri Dec 06, 2019 11:30 pmI ran that category, and sports generally is a nightmare category for me. Easy run of the category.
Actually, poll request for the 12th man clue? I'm curious how it played for everyone else. As I said, sports junkie, no way to accurately judge since it was $3k in free money here.

Catching up. I was at MFF over the weekend.
NHO "tails" on a jacket or Peter Pan collar.
Ran L_M_O, 0/5 in Old Books and surprisingly, Rocket Science.
"Magic Mike" was my only miss and only NHOI in Rest of the Title.
Elliptical was my only miss in Adjectives.
No guess on FJ! Could be literally any of them, and I saw nothing narrowing it down. I didn't know Monaco was even a country, nor did I know that Grace kelly was from there.

Don't change that last bit, Grace Kelly was not from there; she married into the royal family.TenPoundHammer wrote: ↑Mon Dec 09, 2019 8:18 pm No guess on FJ! The best thing that Neil Armstrong ever did, was to let us all imagine we were him.

I learned Magic Mike from Julia Collins. (I spent a little time typing a description and then decided show was better than tell in this instance, so I found the video and made an excerpt.):TenPoundHammer wrote: ↑Mon Dec 09, 2019 8:18 pm "Magic Mike" was my only miss and only NHOI in Rest of the Title.

Coryat: 38,600
50 R/1 W
DD: 3/3
FJ:
LT: 12 (DD), William the Conqueror, rickets science
Given the FJ! category, I felt it perfectly appropriate to prepare by humming "The Final Countdown." The clue seemed like a WECIB, but apparently the "WE" is Germany. Maybe Jennifer and Katie read the clue as "filled with Bavarians, royalty, & even a movie star."

Well, both teams are owned by the estate of Paul Allen, so I guess you were sorta close.Foretopman wrote: ↑Sat Dec 07, 2019 9:03 am I know the difference between the Seattle Seahawks and the Portland Trailblazers. I fully understood the response should be one more than the regular number of players, but completely whiffed on the sport.

Despite my wife and 66% of weekly poll respondents getting it, I still don't understand how anybody got this FJ. Other than the BS CYA pin "its website says" (reminiscent of the European capital Nicosia), practically every European country could fit the clue.alietr wrote: ↑Sat Dec 07, 2019 8:35 am So sorry it didn't work out for you, Randy. I got FJ right, but I don't think it was a good one. On the reveal, Germany would have seemed to have been a better response. Or Austria, for that matter.
Does anyone know what barbarians have to do with Monaco anyway?

I do want to note that I consciously avoided the sports category but not because Im not good in sports, quite the opposite, I knew the whole category. I was hunting for the Daily Double and I did not think that it would be in the sports category, much to my chagrin, it was! Who would've thought?!Category 13 wrote: ↑Fri Dec 06, 2019 9:16 pm Jennifer continues to make the occasional throwaway guess. Went even farther way in FJ, figured the barbarians were a reference to Vikings, so guessed Sweden.
