Alex: Rachel Donegan is a graduate student in English literature who taught in London, am I right?

Rachel Yes. I--

Alex: What subject and to who?

Rachel: I taught English language learners to refugee girls from the Middle East and Africa during my internship in London. It was unbelievable. Most of these girls had never even been in school before.

Alex: Now who were the best students and who were... [inhales] down at the bottom?

Rachel: My best student, English was probably her sixth or seventh language that she had learned--

Alex: Wow.

Rachel: --and she was learning it at a rate f-far exceeding the rest of them. It was inspiring.

Alex: Okay.

Alex: Terry Kent, originally from eau Claire, Wisconsin, was raised by deaf parents.

Terry: Yes, Alex.

Alex: And you want to send out a hello to them today? How would you do that?

Terry: I'd say [signing] "Hi, uh, Mom and Dad. I'm happy to see you, and I'll see you later at the wedding."

Alex: Oh, all right. Good for you.

Alex: Claudia Gray--substitute teacher from Monrovia, California.

Claudia: Yes.

Alex Tell me about your dog.

Claudia: [Laughs] Oh, dear.

Alex: 'Cause I've heard stories.

Claudia: We have a 1-year-old, uh, Bernese mountain dog named Calvin.

Alex: It's a big dog.

Claudia: He's a big dog. And he eats anything that's not nailed down, including the kitchen wall and entire socks, whole.

Alex: You may have told me more than I wanted to know about this dog, but...

Claudia: Yeah.

Seeing as they tape weeks in advance, not likely.

I just had my audition today - an easy board will make me feel better about my chances of getting on.

I'll just say it now: Wow.
Spoiler
Our middle guy went TDD despite being only $400 off the lead and it bit him in the ass big time.
Compact Disk and CD were both 0-fer for me. Not a glimmer of recognition in either. Likewise with Carolingians — I thought that was a typo at first.

blah blah blah I never freaking get Final Jeopardy! right blah blah.

I instantly guessed South Africa for FJ!, as I knew I wouldn't be able to think of anything else. Also, if I were Rachel I would have bet $0 or $1, so that I could win/tie as long as Claudia got it wrong (assuming that she made the MSB).

And how many games did Claudia win in total? I didn't get to see the spoiler...

I'd like to know if he would have got it had he correctly processed the clue. The clue itself was easy for a bottom-row clue.

Neil Diamond in the top row seemed out of place. His album titles are not all that well-known.

On FJ, I was busy thinking of every country other than South Africa.

A gutsy move, but I was pretty sure he'd miss it, since I knew Claudia was going to win.

Funny they had a clue about Toto, which sang the song Africa, which was the subject of FJ. The song also has a line about Mars. The astroid Eros crossed the orbit of Mars.

Thought of South Africa, went with Ethiopia.

It does?

In an oblique way it does, as the song mentions Olympus and the largest mountain on Mars is Olympus Mons.

No, it doesn't. The exact lyric (per Toto's official website) is "There's nothing that 100 men or more (not "on Mars") could ever do!"

I didn't like this board very much.

I guessed correctly on Neil Diamond from remembering the "touching" lyric from "Sweet Caroline." I probably wouldn't have been confident enough to buzz in on it, though.

I can't fault Terry for the TDD. I really feel bad for the guy for having the brain fart up there. It could happen to anyone.

I guessed correctly on FJ. I wasn't sure what the hell the "very different places" part was supposed to mean, but I took it to mean that they were looking for a country that was located on the other side of the continent. South Africa it was.

Someone want to tell me why Liberia was not correct? It gained independence in 1847, according to Wikipedia (although from whom, isn't clear).

Well, I guess Terry decided to go big or go home...and he went home. I don't have any problem with that move. Assuming that he felt that science was at least a fairly strong category, why not try to put yourself in a spot where you'll almost certainly win with a single correct response. I was shocked at how easy the clue seemed at first reveal, as I instantly thought of both topaz and quartz. I wasn't entirely certain they were right, but felt fairly confident. Too bad for Terry that he misread the one key word in that clue, but at least he went down shooting I suppose. Hopefully for his sake he picked a country other than South Africa on FJ. That may make him feel slightly better since the other two players both got it right, although it was possible that he could have finished DJ with a lock game had he gotten the DD and a couple other clues gone differently.

Does anyone know where players are sent if they don't qualify for FJ? Meaning, are they able to watch the game's conclusion from some position off-camera or are they escorted away from the stage and back to the green room? Terry was back on stage for the chat during the credits, so I assume that he got to watch the FJ as it happened, but I can't say that I've ever seen this referenced before. I can't even remember the last time we had a player miss out on FJ, as I've been posting the scores nearly every day since sometime last summer, and I don't seem to recall ever having to enter a negative number before.
