GOAT Tournament Day 1 (1/7/20) Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Post by Jasper »

As I understand the rules of the GOAT Tournament, the two games televised on a given night constitute a match. The winner of the match will be the competitor with the highest combined score of the two games.

This raises the hypothetical scenario where someone may not win either game but still win the match. Furthermore, hypothetically, someone may not win a single game throughout the entire GOAT Tournament but still be declared the GOAT.

Am I missing something?

That just means strategy is like any two-day, total-point affair, like any of the ToC finals we're used to. The players all know that the objective is to win each match, not win any individual game.

There must be some kind of NFC East joke and a 9-7 winner to be made here going off Jasper's avatar.

GOAT Tournament Day 1 (1/7/20) Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Post by Jasper »

To Mark Barrett,

Re your off-topic post. No apologies for the Eagles' making the playoffs. NFC East champions.

As seen this past weekend, regular season records mean little in post-season play (viz., Saints, Patriots).

Based on your location, I assume that you root for the home team. Let's see if the 49ers do any better in their first playoff game.

Code: Select all

James: 33200 15000 48200 63200
Ken: 45000 12200 57200 69400
Brad: 10400 10000 20400 30400
Ken: Bet 6,001 to cover James.
James: You have Brad superlocked and you must get FJ right to win. Bet everything, or at least 3,000.
Brad: You are superlocked into third place. Bet what you want.

Let's see if I've got this right:

On the list of all-time regular-season money winners, Ken is #1.

James is #2.

And Brad is #403.

I wager 200 Quatloos on Brad.

PS: I would say to hell with the Eagles, but my beloved Cowboys put themselves out of the playoffs by their season-long underperformance, so I'll grudgingly concede that the Eagles won the division.

Next year different coach, altogether different (and better) results.

I've been holding very low expectations for this event and have found it impossible to develop a rooting interest. I hope it's able to get some ratings, for the sake of the show (I guess). Maybe James has paid attention to criticism about interrupting Alex on his correct responses and is more watchable now.

FWIW, I just learned that our local ABC affiliate (KODE, channel 12, Joplin MO metro area) is in a pissing match with DISH Network and is not available on my Satellite dish. I'm sure I can rig some rabbit ears. But watching or waiting on commercials with no clicker - nope. Looking forward to the game discussions and gossip here :).

I will take James in 6 (or one less than the maximum, if I don't have the format understood). Jennings in last place.

No break in the J! round. And Robert begins grinding his teeth at the though of more programming. :)

I'm hoping none of this gets pre-empted due to the Iran missile crisis going on right now. :?

Ken may regret not going bigger on FJ.

Players went 60/61, I think.

"Special treat" coming up in game 2 during the interview portion. Please be a dance battle...

(That J! round was easier than game 1.)

ETA: That DJ! round though. Oof. That's what I was expecting to see.

My Coryat in Game 2 was twice that of Game 1, plus 200. I was at 0 for a long time in the first round of Game 1. I'm sure many of you had similar experiences.
Impressive performances by all three! I'm a fan of all of them but Ken's long overdue for a tournament win... and with the most appearances of anyone there, I think he deserves the title.
Hoping for a third lap

I enjoyed watching this, I thought the production values were very good (new music orchestrations especially, ABC stars giving clues (maybe we will get sitcom stars tomorrow), they only aired one segment on a contestant (the others will be shown the next two nights). I also like the question writing, DJ! especially hard for me, but not too much that the questions were not fair. Also, the show's love affair with the Bible and the Oscars continues...

I'm with Alex - that think music seemed short. Did anyone time it?
