Thackeray; I thought of Austen, decided against that, and fumbled for another name to say. (I don't know why I ruled out Austen. It's not like two days before my entire thought process was "Lee? No, too obvious... but who else?")

Nimitz, poet laureate
Oh, what has science wrought? I sought only to turn a man into a metal-encased juggernaut of destruction powered by the unknown properties of a mysterious living crystal. How could this have all gone wrong?

Knew the laurel connection to Apollo, but somehow got stuck on the Olympics and never got to laureate.

On Monday I said "the no-man's-land between North and South Korea"; I count it as a get.

I know of Nathaniel Hawthorne's family history in Massachusetts, but in the moment the book just felt like New Hampshire to me.

For an alliteration bonanza, I negged with Nimitz and rebounded with Rickover. I would count that against my Coryat if I still kept them, but count it toward Lach Trash, since that is predicated on never being able to get in ahead of the players on the show and one of them took my incorrect response before I could hypothetically give it.

Thu - Poet Laureate

Spoiled on Rickover...it got put in the Monday thread...

I had neither Rickover nor Nimitz.

Benedict Arnold on Wednesday, no guess Friday.

I wrote down "What is the DMZ along the 38th Parallel" just to be sure
I definitely forgot it asked for mammal and said ostrich
I slapped my forehead when I clammed on Caligula.

Looks like I'm the only one so far who just said "laureate". I knew there was more than just poet

19th century novels are a real weak point for me. Guessed Austen.

Had no idea that Caligula meant "little boot"! And I'm not nearly enough of a Rome guy to get him from the year.

Rickover was not one I knew at all.

I did include "poet" in my Thursday answer, and I was sort of surprised to see that "laureate" was accepted.

There is, but the only other one I can think of is Nobel Laureate and that makes no sense in the context of the clue.

Weird clue for Caligula. I know they were trying for an elegant tie-in with "boot", but something like "...was showered with stilettos" seems more descriptive of the manner in which the end of his reign was effected.

Mon - Stop the clue at 1953 and it's easy. The nature angle completely befuddled me.

Tue - took 5 seconds to erase the Pavlov Tasmanian Devil to get to the Duckbill critter.

Wed - no way it's just Robert E. Lee. Picked Jeb Stuart.

Th - Poet laureate, of course. Why would you risk answering just "laureate", with the "artistic" adjective in the clue? I don't think the U.S. and Belgium are naming Nobel laureates, as far as the Nobel loophole goes. That is a generous ruling, imo.

Fr- I went with the blank answer. With lines like "showed that abysses may exist inside a governess", I will look this book up for an insomnia cure :). This one would have wrecked my week even if I don't make stupid choices on M/W.
Disclaimer - repeated exposure to author's musings may cause befuddlement.

Picking the wrong Bronte as did one of the contestants prevented a 5/5 FJ week.

Wouldn't have been surprised if they had counted just "laureate" as incorrect. Not sure I was surprised when they accepted it. Glad I didn't have to make the decision.

Had no good guess for "Lake District" -- didn't know it was beloved by Coleridge and didn't know it was a World Heritage Site. And that's with a visit to Lake District National Park with a full day at Lake Windermere a couple of years ago.

Little Boot = Caligula is one of those odd factoids that I didn't know I knew until I saw the clue. Don't know where the knowledge came from, but for some reason I did know it. Memory is strange.

Hyman Rickover was a fascinating character, and a biography of him is well worth reading and highly recommended. He was perhaps the Navy version of Billy Mitchell (except for the court martial part). He constantly battled the Navy brass, but had several powerful allies in Congress who protected him. The history of the nuclear Navy reads like a suspense novel, but really happened.
I'm not the defending Jeopardy! champion. But I have played one on TV.

I may or may not have learned that from the movie ...
