Re: Wednesday, February 19, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
MacKenzie sure liked that material in the DJ! round. It was 17400 for Sam after DD2 at clue 7 with MacKenzie at 6600. When MacKenzie found DD3 at clue 16 she trailed 20200 to 11400 and still trailed with 19400. For those last 14 clues MacKenzie went all the way up to 30200 as she went on a tear.
After DD2 and before DD3 Sam had three picks. He went to $400 in A DISASTER AREA where he already played DD2. Bad move. Sam went to FAMOUS TEXANS $2000. Fine. Sam then did FAMOUS TEXANS $400 to close out that category. Terrible move.
It was funny that MacKenzie and Sam played so well yet they did not know who "Can't Read".
INTERNATIONAL SPORTS had me hopeful for soccer as it's better for me than cricket, rugby etc. I figured I would not have to sort through Ronaldo or Messi while reminding myself this time to not forget Beckham.
The clue was a puzzling instaget. Is it really that easy? Yes, as there was no doubt for winning 5 in combo with always qualifying. There was no other country that could even sniff that distinction as I knew France only had 2 and could not forget the crying over Italy not making it last go-around.
Until the 16601 was shown by MacKenzie the outcome was somewhat in limbo as Sam went for the farm. No monkey business with the wager by MacKenzie. INTERNATIONAL SPORTS could have caused fear by some leaders and nice to see the champ convert both with response and bet.
Sam could have won on many different days this season as he was decent in spots on the buzzer, had wagering nerve, and seemed very calm playing the game. Credit to MacKenzie for not being fazed by big deficits in the midst of the DJ! round.

My thoughts exactly. I briefly wondered if it could be Argentina, France, or Germany, then realized there was no TOM to lead you away from anything but the obvious.MarkBarrett wrote: ↑Wed Feb 19, 2020 11:03 am

I had three countries in mind, all South American. For some reason I had Uruguay as one option. Maybe because I believe they hosted the very first one or something? But then I went Argentina over that and Brazil. But in retrospect I should have known it. Pele's Brazilian and he's one of the biggest names in FIFA history.

Although it is mostly the result of Sam not making a particularly wise move by betting everything for FJ, it is still worth noting that $46,800 is the second highest non-winning total of all time, behind only Adam Levin's $53,999 in James Holzhauer's 18th game.

Germany (including West Germany) has won 4, so not far behind.MarkBarrett wrote: ↑Wed Feb 19, 2020 11:03 am

J! Archive says this is the first time the word "Tushie" used on Jeopardy! (Though I can find "tush" several times, including two references to George Bush and two for Dennis Franz )
Re: Wednesday, February 19, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Ran 4 Letter Words. Despite a lot of hit-and-miss for me, going 4/6 on the $2,000 boxes gave me a fantastic $30,400 Coryat.
There's a Mr. Burns in The Simpsons?! Shows you how much I watch it... Also overthought $600 and said Mr. Krabs.
History for $400 felt like negbait for "shooting star".
Poll request on "Why Johnny Can't Read". That seemed insanely obscure for the top box. It has only one other hit, and Rudolf Flesch only five, the last being in 1998.
I made the connection of Verne = 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea but still didn't wake up enough to go "hey wait, maybe that means 'league' is a form of measurement." Hate misses like that.
I was 4/5 in Mythological Creatures, Potpourri, and Disaster Area. "Hippogriff" stung the most because it was a wheelhouse category but I just couldn't pull it in time.
No guess on FJ! You could have given me the hint of "South America" and I guarantee you I would've guessed literally everything BUT Brazil.

Re: Wednesday, February 19, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
MacKenzie's decision not to push all in on DD3 was curious. Clearly she'd be around $20,000 behind with no DD's remaining in the event of a loss either way, yet she still didn't bet enough to take control of the lead.
Instaget FJ.
Poll request for Feminine Mystique.

Coryat $39,000 (48R, 2W)
DD 2/3
FJ
A brainfart on Sphinx kept me from a 40K, 3/3 DD game. Followed it up with another brainfart on chimera, no idea on the Harry Potter one, then got back on track.
It was nice to see all 60 clues for a change! MacKenzie seems like someone who could go on a run.

Request seen for the Friedan work. Alex seemed quite forgiving of the Beauvoir work neg of it.Ironhorse wrote: ↑Wed Feb 19, 2020 7:35 pm MacKenzie's decision not to push all in on DD3 was curious. Coryat: $43,000 (49R, 0W)
DD: 3/3
FJ:
LT ($3,400): Henry VIII, The Feminine Mystique, rector
That was one helluva game. Loving all these great DD wagers.
Stayed clam on Russia in the Disasters category despite being fairly confident it was right, which kept me from running it.

So what tipped everyone off to Brazil anyway?

I guess DD1 shows they don’t care about offending China.
Close to an instaget on FJ. I remembered Brazil won three straight at one time so I went with them.

Brazil is sort of a Pavlov for a big soccer country (associated with Pele, for instance).TenPoundHammer wrote: ↑Wed Feb 19, 2020 8:03 pmSame.True North wrote: ↑Wed Feb 19, 2020 8:02 pm Stayed clam on Russia in the Disasters category despite being fairly confident it was right, which kept me from running it.

Ugh I answered Feminist Mystique for Betty Friedan.
Why Johnny Can't Read is something you should just know if going on J! How is it a TS?
Knew FJ had to be a South American country as not many Euros made it to the first World Cup.
From there, went with the obvious.
