MacKenzie was not kidding about that pistachio: https://www.google.com/search?q=new+mex ... Q4_pfMOzoM
Hammer is going to love this top box stumper: The OED defines this phrase that includes a U.S. city as “a very short period of time”
I got it backwards going from second to minute and then recalling an Olsen Twins movie title.
Once again MacKenzie had to close a gap. After DD3 at clue 19 it was Amal 15200, MacKenzie 9600 and Judy 4600.
After clue 28 it was:
Amal 14800
MacKenzie 12400
MacKenzie closed the gap to 800 and today there was time for that all-important clue 30 as Amal negged and MacKenzie rebounded. Ball game.
I take my hat off to anyone who successfully precalls today's FJ! clue response off the category. The clue was a little out of left field while the tree to country connection is a J! favorite. This was definitely a pen down & relaxing 30 seconds.
MacKenzie turned a 7-letter response into an 8-letter one. If you are going to get embarrassed by the host and have to suffer through audience laughter then at least have it be worth $25K+

KNICKKNACK $1600: You don’t see these brass receptacles for tobacco chewers much anymore, at least not used for their original purpose
Any judges have a problem with my counting my "cuspidor" as an acceptable alternate response?
5W worth $6400 was too much for Amal to be able to maintain her lead by the end.

A $200-level clue masquerading as a Final.

Okay, I'm not sure that FJ should've been correct. I don't mind the double b, but it's not leb-EH-non, it's leb-AH-non (heck, I think lebb-UH-non would've worked).

Also, Vasoline is a thing. A pretty kickass song.

Learned League.
And +1 for knowing the Don Henley song. (Oh and growing up in NY helps~)

I know many of the customers at my store would have gotten Lesser-Known Names for $200 wrong...
====
Extremely difficult board for me. First time in forever that I've had a Coryat under $10,000.
0/5 in 5 of a Kind and TV Drama, but ran Silent K.
Vienna -> wienerschnitzel was too big a mental leap IMO.
Didn't know that basketball has centers, keep blanking on where the Caribbean is, didn't know NC-17 was actually still in use, had a brainfart on "dairy", and didn't want to risk butchering the Bumblebee guy's name.
Didn't know Downton Abbey had a movie recently, then blanked on both General Hospital and "telenovela". Also blanked on Ecclesiastes in the Bible category.
Also bombed Establishing Some Borders. Just couldn't get my mental map focused. I thought Argentina was somewhere else and that Vietnam was bigger.
0/5 in Kerouac as well.
No guess on FJ!
Despite MarkBarrett's guesses, I actually got Lach Trash on "new york minute". I do think it was a bit of an "old fogey" phrase for the top box though.

Also, as much as I think MacKenzie has been kicking ass, I think it was less about her closing the gap and more about Amal guessing her way out of the lead. "Moriarity"? Ya never know how your brain fires off, huh.

Re: Thursday, February 20, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Middle East + Cedar shouldn't be a FJ. I did spend 20 seconds mumbling "Lebanon had a space program!?" to myself over and over, but I don't know much about their history.
One of these days I'll actually get a Ray Donovan clue right.
New York minute a TS, eh? Hmph. Bunch of scrubs I tell ya

Re: Thursday, February 20, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Cedars + Lebanon rang a very faint bell after the fact, but too faint for me to hear in 30 seconds. Had it surfaced, i would have immediately dismissed it because I was 9001% certain that Lebanon was too small and obscure to have a space program.

The night visitors will have something to say about Amal’s negs as well as her DJ and FJ wagers.

Coryat: $36,800 (46R, 0W)
DD: 3/3
FJ:
LT ($2,600): New York minute, Weiner schnitzel, baccarat (DD), Chile, Niger
Shut out on Kerouac, even with what should’ve been a easy one at the top if I was studying Pavlovs more (beat poet = Allen Ginsberg, always). Still a good DJ despite that, running three other categories.
Just as Alex said, Middle East country + cedar = instaget FJ.

Other than letting third place back in the game and dropping below the leader’s MSBIW on a miss I don’t see what was wrong with her FJ bet. Did she misread the scoreboard and think she was in the lead?
Instaget FJ based on cedar. Add me to those shocked Lebanon had a space program.
Alex is lucky Judy didn’t demonstrate her kickboxing skills after he said cedar should lead to one country and she had it wrong.

I have no problem with it. My dictionary defines cuspidor as simply "a spittoon".MarkBarrett wrote: ↑Thu Feb 20, 2020 12:47 pm KNICKKNACK $1600: You don’t see these brass receptacles for tobacco chewers much anymore, at least not used for their original purpose
