Fourth Podium Poll for 2/21/2020

Post by opusthepenguin »

We'll discuss the poll here rather than in the game thread. The tribe spoke decisively on that issue in the last poll.

Quite an opportunity for a fourth podium would-be champ. I suspect there will be several boardies that MacKenzie can consider herself fortunate not to have faced in this game. Recall that MacKenzie entered FJ with $10,600. Since there's "only" $16,000 in lach trash, you would need to get FJ right, as MacKenzie did, to come out the victor.
CORRECT RESPONSES
$800 OOO, SORRY: a discus
$200 THE WRITERS ARE TRYING TO BE CLEVER: Puritanism
$800 THE WRITERS ARE TRYING TO BE CLEVER: Dave Barry
$600 MAKE A SELECTION: Mike Piazza
$1200 3 "M": summertime
$1200 PULITZER-WINNING JOURNALISM:
$800 IN THE ARTS WORLD: an individual animation cel
$800 YOU KILLED ME!: Billy the Kid
$1600 YOU KILLED ME!: Anwar Sadat
$2000 SOUTH AMERICAN PLACES: Paramaribo (Note: Only take credit if you placed the accent on the "ma". (Note: Just kidding.))
$2000 3 "M": somnambulism
$2000 YOU KILLED ME!: Thomas à Becket (Note: Also credit yourself if just said Thomas Becket (or Becket). Alex did include the à which was added centuries after Becket's death, possibly in mistaken imitation of the the name Thomas à Kempis. But you wouldn't be penalized for failing to make the same mistake.)
$2000 IN THE ARTS WORLD: Turandot
FJ INTERNATIONAL AWARD TROPHIES: Palme d'Or

For me, it all hinges on that Puccini clue. There's a chance I would have caught myself in time and said Turandot instead of Tosca. If so, I pick up $10,600 in trash and lose to MacKenzie on a tiebreaker. Otherwise I lose outright.

I forgot to click the FJ! clue box. If it is not too much trouble could you please check that little box for allowing a revote? Thanks.

I would have matched her $10,600 and also gotten FJ.

And then I'd have beaten her in the tie-breaker. :)

How are you getting $13,000? (EDIT: By doing math properly, apparently.) Even assuming you meant :| when you put :( , I'm getting a total of $12,600. If you actually meant :( (i.e. you guessed and got it wrong in those slots), you're stuck with $9,200 (Edit: $10,000) and a coulda woulda shoulda.

8400 but I woulda had some negs. Arrow for hammer, Serbia for Bosnia, and missed FJ with Cannes Film Festival, missing the palm connection.

Clam on the $200 (I was right on the edge of getting Puritanism, having seen the quote before) and $600 (Mike Piazza was the only Dodgers catcher I could name and I remembered him from the first half of the '90s, but I didn't know he started in 1988), neg on the second $1,200 (I should have known better, but "former Yugoslav" caused me to Pavlov to Macedonia. Gets on everything else net me $12,800, and then I win with a get on FJ. It could have been a clean sweep on the ungotten clues (I also got the two missed DDs right), but I'm not complaining.

I am quite surprised at the very low get rate for Bosnia. What else were people saying?

Mark Barrett mentioned North Macedonia which used to have "former Yugoslav Republic" right in its (provisional) name. I suspect most of us clammed. On a DD, I'd probably gone with Serbia or Croatia. After the reveal, I realized that Bosnia sounded familiar as a place for war atrocities. But I've gotten used to it being Bosnia and Herzegovina and have developed a dislike for choosing it as a response because it takes too long to type on Sporcle.

I'm surprised so many people got the "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" clue right. I had no idea and chimed in with "What is a film reel?" just to take a stab.

Even with that slight neg, that's $11,600 and a FJ get for me.
