Re: Thursday, March 5, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
The writing looked like shutter to me.
I have vaguely heard of that book but put DJAMH for FJ. Paul rebounded from his poor wagering yesterday to become the only one to wager properly in FJ. But I also didn’t get his bet in the first round. Holding back $400 on a category that could well be related to the law and was at least basic American history?
I guess going with Czech Republic is an easy error if you aren’t old enough to remember Czechoslovakia. I don’t have that problem.

Nope, true. But in fairness I’m not reading it very faithfully, it’s in my car and I read it when I’m stuck waiting for someone in a parking lot.

Got Final right away and then spent 25 seconds convinced it was wrong because why would the clue give you “title island.”

And gets it wrong. But I'm sure you'll reiterate how someone has better odds of winning from $0 than $4200.
"House of Pain" was also the name given to everywhere they shot The Island of Dr Moreau (1996)...
The best thing that Neil Armstrong ever did, was to let us all imagine we were him.
Latest movies (1-10): Everything Everywhere All at Once (10), Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken (6), Black Sunday /1960/ (6), Marcel the Shell with Shoes On (7)

Re: Thursday, March 5, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
I knew Frankenstein was wrong because of "title island", but had nothing else. As usual, J! shows their love for multi-modal clues: you've got the book, and you've got the poorly-recieved 1996 Brando/Kilmer movie. You even have the 90s group House of Pain - I personally can't stand "Jump Around" when it plays during sports, and I never knew they were named after the novel.
I could have at least guessed Treasure Island as a "title island", but the clue was clearly going for horror. Heck, even Gulliver's Island would have been a better guess - even if that's not actually the title of the book (and is, I guess, a mash-up of Gulliver's Travels and Gilligan's Island).
I can never remember the difference between "glasnost" and "perestroika" - for a bottom row clue, it was VERY generous to give one and ask for the other. To me, it's tantamount to asking for comedian Laurel's partner.
Anyone else feel old with the "retro phrases" category? Anyone?

By that logic her FJ wager was perfect. But I'm sure you'll reiterate how someone is better off with no chance to win than with some chance to win.

Re: Thursday, March 5, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Frankenstein made sense for about half a second before I reminded myself of "title setting." The Island of Doctor Moreau was all I could think of to make sense of a lab on an isle. I knew it had been a movie, but I couldn't come up with an author to reassure myself it was a novel, British or otherwise. (Upon looking it up and finding H.G. Wells wrote it, I'm sure I knew that before.) But I didn't have anything else, so I stuck with it.

Shutter Island is by an American author (Dennis Lehane), by the way.

I realized my 3-year-old daughter has stats from last night:
Coryat $1,000 (1R, 0W)
DD 0/3
FJ
LT: The Bad Seed
I'm so proud that her first-ever correct response was bottom-row Lach Trash.

Judges, if I said "cuff" instead of "collar" do you think that's acceptable?

Your scores are really impressive. I'm jealous! What are you doing differently than others to get those scores?LucarioSnooperVixey wrote: ↑Sat Mar 07, 2020 12:17 am 58 R (Meghan McCain was my only miss.)

My head-canon is that LSV is actually Watson, having traveled back in time from the exact moment in time that the Turing test was first passed.MattKnowles wrote: ↑Sat Mar 07, 2020 1:12 amYour scores are really impressive. Went to Island of Doctor Moreau pretty quickly; I’ve never read it or seen the movies but knew the general gist of the plot, knew it was British (H.G. Wells), and “house of pain” sounded plausible given the plot.
Agree with Golf about the wagering.
