"Barbara Lowe" 2nd Episode

Post by Roadgeek Adam »

Well, I've discovered something interesting tonight courtesy of an anonymous friend of mine, there's at least a video of "Barbara Lowe" flying under the radar.

These screenshots I've attached come from her second game's final. I figure you people will want to see the final to play for yourself, those it's really rudimentary. Being this is the very first time I've ever seen "Barbra Lowe" in action in video, I can see all the ideas of her behaviour

Note, her competitor in the middle podium gets some heckles from the audience as well.

I apologize if these are already known about, this is still a rare find in my book.

No, they are asking for the position of Pope, not a specific person. Yes Pius was the one serving until 1870 but that’s not what the clue is asking.

OQ cross-checked this clue against the FJ! resource and it's not there. Do we have a date certain?

I only have final, and only small bits of it. if people remember when she was on in 1985, this would be her 2nd show. It's from a tape of clips from the 80s in game shows.

Also, I really cannot provide the access for this. Here is the scores going into final and coming out of it.

Lowe: 2800
Middle (named David): 2200
Right: 1900

Finishing scores:

Lowe - 4401
David - 4400
Right - 1

This article places Goldbart's run in 1985.

https://www.miaminewtimes.com/news/a-da ... ny-6364198

With 4 games for him and 5 for Barbara, we'd need an uninterrupted 9 day gap somewhere in the first half of Season 2. That narrows it down.

(An obituary indicates that Goldbart died on the exact anniversary of the airdate of his muffed ToC DD. Maybe his ex-wife did curse him.)

Followup: This article places Lionel's games in February, which means they were actually 1986.

How'd you like to have your ToC experience spoiled on the front page of the Entertainment section, huh? In other news, I really miss newspapers.

TV Tropes says Lowe's games were March 1986, which checks out.

Was never shown. The clip cut his out for some reason. Unless you can read the screenshot I've added.

Also, the middle contestant's name is David Perry.

Thankfully I have a newspapers.com account, which I've used to help RKS on his Fleming era TOC work. Here's the article closeup

So, from this article, by the same author, Lionel's first show was Friday, February 28, 1986. Game 2 is Monday, March 3, 1986, Game 3 is Tuesday, March 4. Game 4 is Wednesday, March 5. His loss and Barbara Lowe's first appearance is Thursday, March 6, 1986.

Barbara Lowe's shows are:

March 6
March 7 - Game in my pictures.
March 10
March 11
March 12

Then you'll like this. I can help build out the next few days too.

Clint Swett, then a writer from the Sacramento Bee, was one of the 3 new contestants on the Thursday show. He ended up being a 2 day champ.

He posted a two page worth article on his experience, detailing finals and bids. These shows taped in October 1985, so you can assume Lowe's ones were as well. She and her quirks are well mentioned in the piece.

I'm hoping this stuff can be used to at least update Lionel Goldbart's J-archive profile, which lacks the March 6, 1986 date of his loss.

Is it in a Facebook post and you can't download it? If so, here are a couple of ways to do that:

1. Visit the url in your browser and change the address from www.facebook or m.facebook to mbasic.facebook, which loads the page in a Web 1.0 format meant to work with older devices, in which the video frame with the "play" icon on it is a link to an mp4 file (I think of a relatively low quality), which you can right-click/Save As.

2. Even if the post is private, you can use this downloader site by pasting the html source of the page. It will output direct links to the video files of various qualities that, again, you can right-click/Save As.

Stefan, it's on YouTube, but it's unlisted. I'm not sure they really wanted public. I had to ask a friend of the person if I had permission to post the screenshots. I may get the edited clip provided for public, give me about 24 hours.
