Last week in QF3 Will's opponent lost 1000 on DD1. It happened again today. In QF3 Will had 6200 to wager on for DD2 and 14800 to bet on for DD3. Will had those exact amounts again today. For one more coincidence Will gained 3800 both times on DD2.

Will lost big on DD3 today though he ended up with enough to still lead as Jong Ho only scored $800 on the remaining 13 clues.

This was taped in February so at the time the Kentucky Derby was still a go for the first Saturday in May. As of today it's Belmont this month, Derby in Sept. and Preakness in Oct.

The contestants were not ready to name the Confederate sub and a 2016 FJ! clue about it polled at 24%. I'll have to poll that stumper this week to see how it goes.

The FJ! clue was a quick solve for me to join the gentleman although I wished I had been a little more confident about it to put the pen down and stop thinking instead of still having uncertainty during think time.

Will has been the best of the three each time he played though today was tighter than last Wednesday. Onto the finals and perhaps as should be the toughest matchup.

Got FJ from "once the largest state in Germany" but hesitated because I didn't know it lasted until 1947 and thought it was weird to "abolish" it.

Judges .. "Sleeve" for Shoe?:

"Wearable term for the box from which cards are dealt for blackjack in a casino"?

I'm guessing no, as I'm surprised that I'm not finding much on Google for the term at all .. yet both myself and my g/f, who have spent our fair share of time in the casino (usually at poker tables though), both said it immeidately.

As a former card counter, that’s a definite no.

As a poker player, I’d be concerned you’ve got an ace up your shoe.

I got it from the “military power” reference. I also didn’t know it lasted that long.

No BMS on Hepburn? Or clerk?

Prussia is what I ended up on, but I would have thought it had disappeared circa WWI. I also found the word "abolished" puzzling, but that's apparently what happened.

I agree that there should have been a BMS on Hepburn. What gives, judges?

However, the contestants made me a truly happy camper when all three placed FJ wagers exactly, to the dollar, what I told them to! I can't remember the last time---if ever---that that happened. Jong Ho can console himself (a bit) that he would have won by proper wagering in the event of a TS.

I also did not know Prussia was an actual state (as opposed to a region), or that it had been formally done away with. But the "military power" part of the clue made it a no-brainer.

I knew Monitor and Merrimack were wrong, but danged if I could come up with the name of the Civil War sub. Poop.

Many congrats to Will for a very well-played game and for advancing to the finals. His vanquished opponents have no need to hang their heads either.

Not weird at all. It got carved up between Poland and USSR. The exclave centered around Kaliningrad (then Koenigsberg) is the remains of Prussia. :geek:
Guessed Canis Major for Orion on the first DD :( the contestants missing the Hunley.

Add me to those who got it right away but was confused by the wording.

I whiffed on Constellations for $200 because "hunting these" had me thinking "hunting grounds" or other similarly location-based terms, and thus not zeroing in on canes -> canine -> dog.

Ran Pop Music.

Yes, I got U.S. Government for $800 right.

NHO "house managers".

European History had "not even a WAG from Hammer" written all over it. Indeed I had no idea what to pick. I know there is something called "Prussia" but never figured out what it actually was.

Fun fact: Way back when, my school didn't offer history in 8th grade or 9th grade, and in 10th grade I just had ancient history for a semester. So, when I got thrown headfirst into AP European History junior year, I literally thought "Prussia" was some kind of weird repeated typographical error in the textbook. And it's the archetypal "I learned it in school but NEVER heard it outside of school ever" topic I can think of...until today. (Okay, it's only been on J! 232 times, and 5 times in FJ!...but many of those are either incorrect responses, or "prussian blue".)

Either way, I did get Prussia, although I agree that I thought it had gone away earlier - probably WWI if I'd been pressed on the date. "Abolished" would never have been the verb I'd use, but it's accurate. I was not confident about my response, but a get is a get.

I 100% agree on the BMS for "Hepburn" and "clerk" - I let out an audible gasp each time. Alex said "Katharine Hepburn" fluidly, as if it couldn't be anyone else. Perhaps they fixed it in post to remove the ambiguity for home viewers? If they're gonna accept that, they have to accept my response of "Bronte" to the "Name the third Bronte sister" clue. Oddly enough, out loud I said clerk for "clerk to the SCOTUS", but I'm 100% I would have been able to BMS myself to the right response anyway. I might have gone "clerk", "court clerk", "Supreme Court clerk" - do they let you BMS twice?

NHO phial. I figured it was archaic, but the British apparently still used it until a few decades ago?

When I was little, my parents always claimed that their anniversary was easy to remember because it was Bastille Day. That's only helpful if you know when Bastille Day is! I still have a hard time committing both to memory, but at least I got July. (But I'm embarrassed to say that I'm in my 40s and STILL have to think "June-July" to remember which one comes first when they're not connected.)

I stalled on "house manager", but I'm 99% sure I would had it back in February. The world is very different now. The impeachment seems years ago.

This game had tons of wordplay in it - and not in the obvious places. Every flower clue, the picture was unhelpful to me, but the wordplay was.

It's where they invented the color blue

Hepburn should have, but I disagree on clerk since you were spotted 'Justice' in the clue. If you clerk for a justice in the US, you're a SCOTUS clerk (or too obscure to be asked about on J! "Ooh, sorry, she was the first Justice of the Peace court clerk.")

The largest bit had me thinking Prussia really hard but it didn't seem to click until I realized what when they meant by eliminating it, it's now where Poland is.
The best thing that Neil Armstrong ever did, was to let us all imagine we were him.

I hate that Crayola themselves propagate the myth that they didn't change any of their colors whatsoever until Prussian blue became midnight blue. (Note the erratum on "Try Color" for $200 in this game, one of only three that I remember submitting myself.)

I had Prussia immediately then second-guessed myself and wrote down Bavaria, too. Luckily I ultimately stuck with Prussia. In hindsight it's obvious that Bavaria is an extant state and that should have eliminated it from consideration.
