Joe gets the honest dumbass award. At least it made no difference for anything. The clue stumped me and I could only guess a baseball player I knew died that year in hoping he got appointed to something of note.

This is the game! I've mentioned it on this board a couple of times, but I always thought the FJ was Gerald/Henry Ford and Michigan.

That's one I can check off the list of games I'd like to see again. Funny how old memories conflate.

I think I recall Bamaman posting about the Hoover occurrence. I definitely remember reading a description of it that said Hoover and not Ford.

According to the search feature, none of the times I have typed out “Hoover”, none of them reference this game. (Until now, of course). This is the first I recall hearing of this incident. It is rather amusing.

I couldn’t figure out exactly what civil servant meant and put Truman.

I searched your posts as well. I believe you, but I know I've read someone, possibly on the Sony board, describing the incident. As I recall, they remembered the correct response being Herbert, and the contestant, when asked if he meant Herbert, replied sarcastically that he meant J. Edgar, and Alex promptly ruled him wrong.

That incident is absolutely wild...I'd never heard of it before. Did it seem like Alex was formally asking him to amend the response, or did it seem off-the-cuff? I actually think what Alex did makes sense - most of the time, "Hoover" should require a little more detail unless you're already spotted a "Herbert" or "J Edgar". But on the other hand, the rules as I understand them would force "Hoover" to count, as it's the correct last name, and FJ! doesn't allow for BMS.

If your FJ response elicits a BMS, and it's the only one, reveal it first thing, and BMS it verbally. Say, "We need some clarification from one of our contestants, so next, I'll reveal the partially correct answer from one contestant, and they'll have 5 seconds to clarify it."

Yes, it alters the order that responses are revealed. And yes, it could create an anticlimax where a non-lock leader officially wins before the other responses are revealed. And it gives a little bit more time to mull over things like which Bronte sister wrote which book. But it opens up some possible FJ! responses without having to get too creative.

No idea what you do if two or all three players need a BMS, which I guess is why they (at least AFAIK) have the rule that "Final Jeopardy is final".

Two clues were missed because of it. I gave Bill double correct responses and it seems to fit the scoreboard situations.

talkingaway: I would say Alex was curious where the "Pat Br" was going and while there decided to follow up on the Hoover. To me it was not fishing for specification one way or the other and just Hoover would have been accepted.

Good news: With Alex mentioning the upcoming event I noticed for the first time in the Archive (had not recalled from 1996) that the four special games did not end the season and instead there a regular play episode to conclude S12. It occurred to me to check my tape to see what I had after the four games.

The tape was near the end and I found it had John McKeon. I rewound some more and the 4xer was still there. After a more lengthy rewinding I got to the last of the 1996 Olympic Games Tourney. From there I forwarded and found the game that concluded S12. John McKeon was S11 so my guess is I got at least some, if not all of his regular run on Saturday repeats in 1996.

What a pleasant surprise to find I had up to six regular play games not in the Archive. With the other one in 1992 I had forgotten I had that will give me others to archive when I finish the tourney games.

It is odd the Olympic Tournament didn’t have the normal two-day final and instead ended the season with one game separated by a week from the previous regular game.

The woman who beat Stephan on 7/12/96 had an unfortunate run. Her two wins were separated by an unusual tournament in the middle of summer. Not the best viewing time. Then she has to wait for her third game and draws a TOCer.

It was fun to take in the Sports clues with knowledge of things after 1992.

Alex indicated that if Rob had bet zero there would have been co-champions and both Cori & Rob would become semifinalists.

I'm going to do the other three 1992 TT games, one seniors game with a good video clip to share, then the missing 1994 QF teen games since I have picture requests and then go back to the regular play games I have that are not in.

Man up and read them! They're both short, especially Ruth. And they're both a fun read, especially Esther.

EDIT: Looking at the clue, I don't see how just reading the books would help much here. You'd basically have to know the fact or at least know that Esther is a later book that doesn't directly mention God whereas Ruth is the great-grandmother of David. So it's not too hard to guess which book struggled a bit with canonicity and which one always made the grade.

They still have those? What version are they using these days? English Standard Version is my guess. They used to be KJV. I assume it's still the "Protestant" canon only. Check the Table of Contents for Tobit and Judith and 1 and 2 Maccabees. I mean, if you feel like it. There's not much to do around there anyway, right?

I don’t know. I was the one that gave him November 5 and 6, 1996. There are 20 games still missing: 8 from September 1996, 8 from October 1996, and then January 23, 1997, March 5 and 11, 1997, and April 15, 1997.

Darn close to a perfectly even game with 21R, 19, 19 and each solving a DD along with the triget for the FJ! clue. Strange that they could get everything right (though with some rebounds) and got stumped with a pop culture clue that should have been wheelhouse at the time of taping.

Yep, but they did pretty well with some tough-ish clues. I doubt it would go that smoothly today. They'd really have to water down the category to achieve the same get rate. We might not even see the bottom 3 clues outside of a TOC.
