I guess I am a full-merger speaker, but, I presume, so was Berry Gordy.

Maps on the internet of various dialectal boundaries do seem to show Michigan as being firmly in the merger camp. The Wikipedia article did not mention any distinctively African-American Vernacular English approach to the merger. The South, however, from which Gordy's Great-Migration-era parents originally came, is said to be an area that often has Mary-merry merger and preserves marry (and therefore Barry) as distinct. I am sure that somewhere on the Internet one can easily find footage of Gordy saying his own name, but I leave that exercise to anyone else who would like to undertake it.

Yeah, don't think I didn't try that. He was a first-person-pronoun user. No Bob Dole was Berry Gordy.

But he didn't correct Barbara Walters, at least:

It was also mentioned previously in this thread.

Notably, according to the article, 57% of American English speakers say marry and merry (and by extension, Barry and Berry) the same. Not universal, but it should be enough for the contestant to get credit for the alternate spelling.

If they pronounce them differently, how? Do they say "merry" like "mrry", Cleveland Brown style?

Because Berry Gordy has never been called Brry Gordy, that I can find.

(a) It's plausible that you might find him saying, "My name is Berry Gordy."
(b) Berry Gordy is still alive.

Sorry - indeed you did post it. I guess my eyes skipped over it due to the transformation of the key words into ellipses in the URL. And of course that happened again when I posted it. Mea culpa.

Come to think of it, this is actually a dead end. Berry is the pronunciation we all agree on. We all agree (I think) that Berry the name sounds like berry the fruit. If his name actually were Barry, that is where the confusion would arise.

I wonder if it's a matter of Barry and Berry being 2 different actual names. Like you'd get dinged if you put Lisa Minnelli, even though you could also broadly argue that L-I-S-A could conceivably be pronounced "lie-zuh".

So is Ken the new Clue Crew? If the audiovisual clues are like that, then I won't mind them as an occasional feature. Also nice to see Ken dial down the cockiness in delivering them.

That said, I completely bombed the category. No guess on the first two, and then chickened out on $600 and $800.

I joined the contestants in being caught flat-footed on Pieces of "Eight" for $200. I just wasn't expecting to be asked to convert Roman numerals in the first box and therefore couldn't process the clue.

"Fences" = Denzel Washington rings no bells for me. Recognized the next two but couldn't pull them in time.

Also skunked in Volcanoes. No idea why I said Etna instead of Vesuvius.

Then another 0/5 in Sultans. I knew Isabella but just couldn't match Ferdinand.

"Surface to air missile" is also unfamiliar to me.

No idea how I whiffed on Mary Higgins Clark, as my mom is a big fan of hers.

Detroit to Motown to Berry Gordy was a very easy mental path. To me, Barry/Berry are pronounced the same.

Lach Trash: Equal Rights Act, Rick and Morty, also got the "hasta la vista" DD

I went with Quincy Jones, but that ruling was TERRIBLE!

The Barry/Berry ruling reminds me of this ruling on Password Plus back in the 80s:

I'm with you. These have two different sounds and "Mary, merry, marry" have 3 different sounds.

Best I can do for the differences is this:

Coryat $41,800 (48R, 2W)
DD 3/3
FJ --> I would have totally written Barry Gordy (poll request?)

The ruling was completely inconsistent with anything I thought I knew from the first 36 seasons of J!. Wow. Lesson learned: don't write the first name unless you absolutely, positively have to.

Glad the harsh FJ ruling didn't change the outcome. I'll be interested to learn if they were specifically advised to use a first name during the break.

Agree, and in any event, it was 100% clear she was talking about the right person. It's not like Berry Gordy is a Motown producer and Barry Gordy is a shortstop for the Tigers or something.

I pronounce those two words the same. But the word the players said (hairy) is not the word they were going for (Harry). My clue would have been “Truman”.

I also pronounce Barry as rhyming with carry and Berry as the end of strawberry. But had I been judging, I give her credit.

It took a bit, but I got it right. I only wrote down his last name. If I had wanted to put down his first, I would have made the same error the player did.
