Re: Thursday, January 14, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Another runaway for Lucy while the path to get there was quite different than yesterday's route. Brett had to walk out of the studio in a daze and wonder what happened as he left with just the $1,000.
Ouch on Brett having "sportswriter" in his introduction and then not having THE BEST OF TIMES go well.
Normally the players leaving AUTOMOBILES for last would be fine by me but this time I actually managed to get 6-8-10 right and have to wonder if I could have got the unplayed "easier" clues right.
The FJ! category is exactly what I want to see after the WORLD GEOGRAPHY of yesterday.
The FJ! clue did not have me sure, but I took my best guess and got lucky as it was just as much as thinking about what J! likes as having touched the pages of the book.
Funny that once again Lucy missed in a lock while her opponents both got it.
Brett could have bet 3600 more on DD2 to have had 9600 for the FJ! round, but the "what if" game then goes to Lucy who could have bet $1600 more on DD3. It would have been exciting to see a 9600 vs. 19200 scenario for the FJ! round. Would Lucy have bet or sat pat?

It is finished: http://www.j-archive.com/showgame.php?game_id=6904
The laugh in 2-LETTER LIT $800 plays better watching than reading it in the archive.

Archive playthrough:
Coryat $39,200 (49R, 2W)
DD 3/3
FJ
Negged with "medial cruciate ligament" and 1600m for 1500m (The "just a bit shorter than a mile" thing gets me Every. Single. Time. because a mile is 1609 meters. Adding that one to the flashcard deck so it doesn't happen again.)
Having young kids made FJ easy; not sure how I would have gotten it otherwise.

56 R
DD: 3/3
FJ:
LT: Secretariat, 1500 Meters, Left Hand, Gull-Wing, Corvette, Guanabara Bay, Buttercup, Cunard, The Lady and the Unicorn, Medial Collateral Ligament
Liz has a "Fitting" name.
Was hoping to see Yevgeny Zamyatin's "We" in 2-Letter Literature. My pre-call failed.
1969 book was all I needed to get "The Very Hungry Caterpillar".

I'm guessing you needed at least the category to rule out Slaughterhouse-Five, The Godfather, Portnoy's Complaint, The Andromeda Strain, and I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings....LucarioSnooperVixey wrote: ↑Thu Jan 14, 2021 4:03 pm

The curse continues as Liz corrects Ken and loses.
Several clues get left behind for the first time in the Jennings era.
Instaget FJ.

We went 4 games before having Unread Clues in the Jennings Era. Not too bad if you ask me.
The 2nd Daily Double in DJ was either Templar or Round Table. sadly i chose the Latter. Ive seen TS 3 and 4 and couldnt get Buttercup.
I was thinking Pop up Book on Final so i went with Goodnight Moon, which im not even sure is a pop up book anyway.

runs: 2-letter, Historically Bad, Archives, Y is the only vowel,
Daily Doubles: (WECIB), (WAG),
trash: Secretariat (how?) , 1500 meters (doesn't anyone know metric?) , gull-wing,
FJ: Guessed A Wrinkle in Time. Wasn't getting Caterpillar out of that.
Joined the contestants in stand & stares on the last 3 Unicorns clues.

Re: Thursday, January 14, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
I knew the book they wanted, but couldn't for the life of me remember the name.
Re: Thursday, January 14, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Even with Ken's faster clue-reading, a ton of negs left four clues behind. This did seem like a harder board.
====
I thought "Jo" was far more difficult than "Oz", and it was my only miss in that category.
Ran Wee-Pourri and Y Is the Only Vowel, but was 0/5 in Historically Bad.
-1/5 in Archives. $400 felt like a coinflip on Constitution/Declaration and OF COURSE I picked the wrong one. AS USUAL.
"Seabiscuit" lodged into my brain even after the neg and blocked me from pulling "Secretariat" in time. Hate close-but-no-cigar misses like that.
I did read The Very Hungry Caterpillar as a kid. I remember it having holes in it. Still, all I could think of was those interactive books that require kids to stick their holes through and touch various surfaces, which led me to put down Pat the Bunny instead.

A couple of hours before J! aired, I watched a 1955 episode of "You Bet Your Life" on Tubi. Ex-heavyweight champ Joe Louis and his playing partner were TKO'd by Groucho's $1,000 jackpot question, "what is the present-day name of the strait formerly known as the Hellespont?"

About half of the show was pre-empted here for Biden's speech this evening.
Not many people can say they've lost four times on Jeopardy!.

Re: Thursday, January 14, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
I'd have switched the positions on those two. But that's just because Oz is slightly easier, not because Jo was particularly difficult. On her own, Jo wasn't out of place in the $400 slot. Name the Little Women character who fits the category. Definitely a three-way buzzer race in most games.TenPoundHammer wrote: ↑Thu Jan 14, 2021 7:52 pm I thought "Jo" was far more difficult than "Oz", and it was my only miss in that category.

Do you know anything about the book? I've never read it, saw the movie once, but only one of the sisters fits the category.
Now swimming in the J! pool.

Same here. There's a Jo and a Meg and an Amy and one other Beth? That's pretty much the extent of my knowledge. Oh, one of them gets sick and dies. I remember that from Friends. I should probably know which one. I'd say I also know the last sentence of the book, but my wife informs me that The Simpsons has led me astray on that score. I guess pop culture can only take you so far.Bamaman wrote: ↑Thu Jan 14, 2021 10:14 pmNever read it nor have I seen any movie version of it.
