FJ was a welcome WAG as my thought process was: "They're clearly looking for a motel/hotel chain with an amount in the name. Motel 6? Were rooms really that cheap back then? I got nothing better so let's try it..."
To echo Mark's point, you gotta know your 7 Wonders guys. I knew he was doomed when he bet only 10k. Thats an all-or-nothing situation there, going half-way does nothing to improve your odds, as evidence by Brian still having the lock.

Was sure glad I didn't think of Super 8, my sympathies to anyone who picked that over Motel 6. Looks like it was founded in 1974 with an $8.88 nightly rate. Inflation calculator says this is $46.62 today. Very close to the same amount!

Re: Tuesday, January 19, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
I got Motel 6 pretty quickly, especially with the "travel" hint in the category. I had a 25 seconds of confidence, followed by a 5 second panic when I thought of Super 8, but that seemed to me to be less nationally famous than Motel 6, with their "We'll leave the lights on" campaign. I didn't change my response, fortunately. Oddly enough, there are almost twice as many Super 8s as Motel 6s.
Dollar Rent-A-Car didn't come to me, as I was thinking strictly of hotel/motels. Would a car rental cost $1 in 1962? Probably not. In my nightly Internet rabbit hole last night, I was reading about McDonalds, and their burgers in the late 50s/early 60s were 15-20 cents, so if the response were "Dollar", a car rental is about 5 burgers. The ratio seems off - five burgers at McDonalds today is, what, about $20 max if you get "fancy" ones. Way less than a car rental.
I think some of Ken's history and perspective as a contestant is what caused him to allow Rosanna Arquette. Yes, her response was wrong, but it's pretty clear in the "did they know the material" heuistic, she'd pass. I wouldn't complain if they counted it wrong, though - J! can be strict about what they're asking for.

Interesting that when you looked at that picture, you saw Brad Pitt. I saw a bat.
The policy is there is none - although ideally some common variants of answers should be on Ken's sheet. Mostly, last names are okay, but first names required when there could be confusion - Curie is an obvious BMS. "Williams" for a deceased comedic (and dramatic) movie (and sitcom) actor, a BMS is not needed. For a tennis player, BMS. It's frustrating, I agree. Khan, however, definitely deserves a BMS. The worst thing is when a player doesn't expect a BMS, response semi-correctly, and then loses on a BMS...but it happens.

I combined the names from both companies and said Motel 6.
Nice try, Brian, but H&R Block won't work everytime.

ITYM Super 6 or Motel 8? Both my non-trivia wife and I got this one pretty much instantly. I wasn’t a fan of Brian’s answer, mainly because it doesn’t seem as much funny as it does mean. Smilies don’t change that for me, but maybe I’m just being old and crotchety.rockyboy34 wrote: ↑Tue Jan 19, 2021 10:31 pm

Didn't get Final Jeopardy. I got stuck trying to think of a car rental place for some reason. Maybe I associate that with business travel.
I liked the "Sounds like the movie's sequel" category. The clues were funny.
I think Brian mispronounced Maori. I think he said it with 3 syllables instead of 2. Are there multiple correct pronunciations of that word? I think a lot of us, especially coming from the archive, probably have the fear that we're going to mispronounce something on the show and get dinged for it.
Last time Caligula/Nero come up as a response I missed it and decided to figure it out or use a mnemonic. So that worked.
Is there a good reason to know that the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway is in the Philippines? Lisa got that clue right and nobody missed it so obviously it was gettable but I don't understand how to make a connection with that to anything else.

Somebody call the studio medical team, we got a burn victim here!
The song title one was all sorts of bizarre and felt like they just wanted to keep things moving
And srsly, if you only have time to study one thing for Jeopardy!...make it the Ancient Wonders.
I'll never forget that Michael Hutchence fronted INXS. It will likely be the ONLY thing I'll ever remember about INXS, but, still.
When I went to Sydney, the roof of the Hard Rock Cafe had a mural with five rockers:
I knew four of them. So I asked one of the staff, at, again, the Sydney, Australia, HRC, who the 2nd from the right was.
Spent all the commercial time trying to precall "Thomas Cook"...I could only remember 'Thomas' by the time of reveal.
Got final thanks to The Simpsons!
Regarding Khan, I think this is just going to take experience.MarkBarrett wrote: ↑Tue Jan 19, 2021 1:46 pm Ken (or is it the judges with Alex gone?) are letting responses slide that will generate comments to the negative. Just Khan? Ken provides the first name. Song title wanted? Go ahead and give the actress's full name instead. I get why it happens though I can see the other side of wanting Ken to be a little tougher on the players as well.

That'd be my fear, too. I swear I remember some big controversey in the 80s on J! about poin/set/ti/a vs poin/set/ta. Searching the archive, all I could find is this:MattKnowles wrote: ↑Tue Jan 19, 2021 10:45 pm

HOLIDAYS & OBSERVANCES $500: This Christmas flower named for an American diplomat is honored on December 12
It has a self-correcting poinsetta going to poinsettia, but it's from the 90s. I know I saw a news story about it, but I was probably in my early teens.
Also, I swear that I've heard "poinsettia" pronounced incorrectly more often than correctly.
I think there's more leeway on foreign words and phrases that would be reasonably difficult for a native English speaker to say. You're right that the number of syllables is key, and from what I've read, I can't find a source to give 3 syllables. For some reason, I've heard that incorrect pronunciation more than the correct one, too. So, technically, it's wrong if he did say it with 3 syllables....but, again, the foreign word leeway clause might be in effect. Plus, I think if you transcribe "may or ee", you can reasonably get "Maori". It could be seen as semi-spelling out the response, breaking it into ma/or/i.

Absolutely. The other one like this that bugs me is "nuptial." For some reason most people pronounce it like it ends -ual rather than -ial.talkingaway wrote: ↑Tue Jan 19, 2021 11:53 pm Also, I swear that I've heard "poinsettia" pronounced incorrectly more often than correctly.

Which pronunciation do you think is incorrect? Because it takes seconds to find dictionaries that list both common pronunciations. Granted, Merriam-Webster calls one nonstandard, but other dictionaries don't, like Google's dictionary. Collins, which comes from England, calls the 3-syllable version "American."This Is Kirk! wrote: ↑Wed Jan 20, 2021 12:13 amAbsolutely. The other one like this that bugs me is "nuptial." My family used 3 syllables for the flowers my whole life. I'm not changing now...
Brian's 3-syllable pronunciation of Maori is even easier to rule on, no need to consult a reference. It accounts for all the letters, so it's fine for J! purposes, if not for cultural sensitivity...
We used to travel the interstates of America when I was small, so I (sort of) remember when Motel 6 was $6...

Nailed FJ but without a ton of confidence. As others have pointed out, there were other plausible answers. Hurts to miss a DD that gave you "huge marble tomb" along the way to a 1-in-7 option.

Obviously the three syllable version is incorrect. Like I said, I realize people say that, but people also say "new-cue-ler." Nobody pronounces the word "partial" with three syllables--at least no one I've heard--so why do people pronounce "nuptial" with three?davey wrote: ↑Wed Jan 20, 2021 12:59 amWhich pronunciation do you think is incorrect? Actually (3 or 4 syllables there?), they do...when they say partial - ity... (Never heard anybody use a u sound, though.) Some of your examples irritate me too. I've come to believe more as I get older that that's my problem. And dictionary writers often agree. English is a messy language, and English speakers are even messier. You'll pull poinsetta from my cold dead tongue...(But I would not consider misspelling it... )This Is Kirk! wrote: ↑Wed Jan 20, 2021 10:01 amObviously the three syllable version is incorrect. I thought the joke FJ response was fine. Unless he spent 7K large just to make it that is, then it is a pretty expensive troll . It is very much an inside joke - if you get out of this ecosystem you will find very few viewers that get the joke. I barely pieced it together from lurking here for 3 years. I do remember Watson and Tulsa as a punchline, that should be the default throway, along with someone who has not been in my kitchen .
I thought Ken's voice was a little less ?reedy?, or fuller? Maybe some coaching or just more comfort? Or just me getting accustomed to it?

In my business traveling days, I avoided business class hotels (Hilton/Mariott etc..) like the plague, unless the conference is in the exact hotel. It used to be because I didn't like my car held hostage and paying 20 bucks a day for wifi, etc.. I found the motel chains like Super 8 and Days' Inn often had brand new buildings compared to Holiday Inn's and Ramada Inns with old smoked up rooms and dim lighting. For leisure travel (please go away Covid!) I definitely avoid upscale digs, not because of the cost, but because of the white privilege and the people who choose to stay there to avoid people like me . One final travelogue lesson learned the hard way - La Quinta is pet friendly and you will basically be staying at a dog hotel, if that is your thing.
