I just went back and looked at that clue. What slur word?

Hmm... Never considered that a "slur word".
As a matter of fact, one of my favorite genres of music is widely known as "Gypsy Jazz", a specific type of swing-oriented music as popularized by the great Django Reinhardt. He called it that, and so do nearly all of today's practitioners of the art, such as Hot Club of SF.

If it is allowed in San Francisco (where Dianne Feinstein is too racist to have a school named for her) how bad can it be?Rackme32 wrote: ↑Thu Feb 04, 2021 1:57 pm Hmm... Never considered that a "slur word".

I think some of the distaste for that word comes from its shortened form, meaning to cheat or shortchange someone. For a long time, I never knew of that connection - to me, it as a completely separate word, divorced from its original meaning...but to many, the etymology is well known. I can think of a religious minority whose name can be used in a similar way, and when it's used that way it's almost universally recognized (and hopefully reviled) as a terrible slur. Although their full name isn't controversial at all.Bamaman wrote: ↑Thu Feb 04, 2021 2:03 pmIf it is allowed in San Francisco (where Dianne Feinstein is too racist to have a school named for her) how bad can it be?Rackme32 wrote: ↑Thu Feb 04, 2021 1:57 pm Hmm... It also comes from a lot of genuine racism and oppression in Europe - the Romani people are apparently Europe's largest ethnic minority, and they've gone through (and, from what I gather, are still going through) a LOT. There's also a sterotype that goes along with that word that's not the most flattering.
I just go by "I'll call you by the name you want to be called by", and from what I've learned, the Romani people prefer that name.
Of course, I don't think a lot of this was that well-known 40 years ago, which is probably why there aren't many protests about Fleetwood Mac. And a lot of the story of the Romani people still isn't that well-known today.

Re: Tuesday, February 2, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
My wife and I adopted our son from Romania in 1999. We spent a week there. We flew into Bucharest and then took a train ride with our escort (who was with us all week and helped us tremendously) to the village where our son was living in an orphanage.
The night before we got him, the three of us were walking around the town taking in the sights. Our escort went on at great length about how a lot of Romanians were Gypsies and what horrible people they are. I asked if our son was a Gypsy and he got an awful look on his face and assured us he wasn’t.
As I said, he helped us get our son and we greatly appreciate that. But he seemed like the Romanian version of Archie Bunker. (Although this was the only time he made any comments like that).

Well, it was in "Writers for Children," so I suppose it could have been the the Charlotte's W.E.B. guy............twelvefootboy wrote: ↑Tue Feb 02, 2021 11:44 pm I went with DuBois, but didn't think it would be the W.E.B. guy.
I'm not the defending Jeopardy! champion. But I have played one on TV.

Took me a minute, but I got FJ from a recent perusal of Seuss's Wikipedia page:
Full quote from DAM:
You're wrong as the deuce
And you shouldn't rejoice
If you're calling him Seuss.
He pronounces it Soice (or Zoice)
Also:
Geisel switched to the anglicized pronunciation because it "evoked a figure advantageous for an author of children's books to be associated with—Mother Goose" and because most people used this pronunciation.
