Very glad I put "year of the Spanish Armada" as one of my very first Anki flashcards. It took 2 steps to get from 16th century to 1500s, but after that it was obvious what they wanted.
Spoiler
1588.

Today's Ken moments:
Nothing added on the Scottish poet clue other than, "Right".
Tampico not said as "Tam-PEE-koe" but more like "TAM-puh-koe"
Two options for FISHING FOR THE RIGHT WORD $1000: This fish common in North America is also a word for a type of spear

Stuart was not comfortable with POETRY yesterday even though he got the DD right. Today Stuart played a DD in PLAY CHARACTERS: In this play Sister Aloysius, who serves as the principal of St. Nicholas School, has suspicions about Father Flynn

I suspect plays are not a specialty for Stuart since he guessed Boys Town. That puts a whole new spin on the Spency Tracy film.

Leah found DD3 on clue 30 trailing 13000 to 14800 to 6600. What to wager? She went for a pretty $4,000 and jumped up to 17,000 and the lead. If she had missed then Leah would have trailed 14800 to 9000. Rob would have needed only 3201 to cover and would have won on a tough clue.

Instead Leah used her lead to her advantage in betting 0 on a TS FJ! clue. Rob could have won by a buck if he had solved the FJ! clue.

I get why the FJ! clue stumped the players as there were a couple of connections to make while I'm disappointed it happened as I would have liked to have seen someone get correct.

Stuart selected clue 29 of the DJ! on a 50/50 shot of the DD being there. If he had found it and bet big then the FJ! round could have been an even bigger contest of who blinks first with a category that seems like it instilled fear in the players with a total of 2201 in wagers.

My expectation was something about Pope Gregory and the calendar while thinking it was not going to be 20th century. I'm glad it had a solid history angle and not a sneaky word origin type about someone's name.

Archive playthrough:

Coryat $39,200 (47R, 1W)
DD 3/3
FJ

Was liking my odds of hitting the low $40Ks after the J! round, but the movie category and the Hands category were rough for me. Fell for the GB negbait on Islands $800.

FJ: wasn't overly confident, but I can only think of one late-16th century invasion force, so........

I thought of you on this clue that made me laugh for those playing off the archive: This fishy color is seen here

It was so weird to see the screen filled with just that color.

On that one, there was only one fishy color I could think of, so I went with it! Looking forward to the comic relief when I watch the episode later...

Oddly-worded FJ. I would have done " Late 16th century Pope Sixtus V promised indulgences to all who participated in this invasion force, which he regarded as a crusade."

The wording threw me off completely, despite British history being a strong point for me. I went for Ottomans. If I saw your wording, I think I would have gotten it.

In betting to cover Leah’s zero wager, Rob put himself into position to be passed by Stuart. While I wouldn’t bet zero from the lead I don’t think the bet was that bad. She only had one player to worry about and he had good reason to bet smaller than her lead. If you hate the category at least you aren’t making things worse. Make the other player beat you.

Had I been in Rob’s spot I probably bet $1,599 and then regret it the rest of my life as I got it right. Being told to put down “what” and not “who” probably would have helped as I started trying to think of a group of people. All that came to me was the Huns and that just didn’t seem to fit. Then the date clicked in and I put down Spanish Armada with less than 100% confidence but managed to end the week on a positive note.

Glad Burns came up in a Ken game to end everyone’s wondering.

It did me at first as I thought some group was invading Rome and he was recruiting people to ward them off.

Are the J! judges going to argue with Wikipedia?

Feathered spears, often called darts or javelins, were used in medieval and Renaissance Europe...

I think it was a little unfair of the writers to call Reagan's gubernatorial win his "first political victory". Starting in the early '40s he was elected to the board of directors of the fledgling Screen Actors Guild, then to the vice presidency, then to the presidency of the organization. To characterize these elections as anything other than political victories is to place unnatural constraints on the word "political".
