John made me laugh with his baseball story as however many years ago I did a project of cutting things out from newspapers & magazines. Instead of putting the images in a scrapbook like a normal person, I made a wall of fame on the inside of a closet door that include the Ryan vs Ventura.
Spoiler

And the classic video:
Now I hope to see a baseball category tomorrow (or later if John continues to win).

I thought TECHNOLOGY was going to skunk me as I was out to sea for the first four clues, but saved a zip in knowing the $1000 clue.

If Michael farmed DD3 then that is 14800 for the FJ! round and 29600 at best. Perhaps John would have won $5K more if that happened as he would not 7600 spare to bet.

The FJ! category had me try precalls of Chaucer, Tolstoy, Allende and Beowulf.

The FJ! clue had me stumped. I ruled out Poe's "Rue Morgue" as a sucker's play and had no inspiration for anything connected to Jack the Ripper.

In trying to recall any woman dying in literature I thought of Anna Karenina. That got me to Russia and I wrote Moscow to avoid a blank page. Near the end of time I thought of the right work though did not know enough whether a switch was warranted and even if so I would not have had enough time to do it.

This FJ! clue may generate at least 3 wrong choices for the poll of incorrect cities.

Archive playthrough:

Coryat $42,000 (49R, 1W)
DD 3/3
FJ :(

Worst blank: couldn't name the royal house of SAUD-i Arabia.

Said Hermia for Angela. Negged myself, but upon further review...

Judges?

FJ: right novel, but didn't know anything past that and guessed Moscow because I figured if I got that far, it wouldn't be St. Petersburg....

Had the novel right away. Matched Michael in guessing the wrong city. Considered St. Petersburg but couldn't talk myself into changing.
Oh, what has science wrought? I sought only to turn a man into a metal-encased juggernaut of destruction powered by the unknown properties of a mysterious living crystal. How could this have all gone wrong?

I've read the book referenced in FJ twice, and it's one of my favorites. I wasn't sure on the year it was published, so it was more of an educated guess based on 2 women murdered, but knew the city it took place in instantly.

Zero chance on FJ. Never read the novel, the year means nothing to me, and even if you had spotted me the novel, I would have guessed Moscow.

The category steered me away from the US and England. I put down Moscow with very little confidence.

Man, what a rough final. I went with Venice for Thomas Mann's Death in Venice. Published much later than the given year, but it was all I had with such limited wording in the clue.

My count is 1/8 on the board and with the players that's 1/11. Hammer will add one to the miss side of the ledger when he posts.

Three misses for me on 1/25, 2/1 and 2/8 to cue up whichever "Monday" songs fit.

I got a chuckle from Leah’s college considering Mississippi a foreign country. As we say in Alabama, “Thank God for Mississippi”.

Absolutely knew London was the wrong response based not just on WORLD LITERATURE typically excluding the US and England, but also because they're going to pick a city off track enough that it's not going to be one where you can just stumble on the right response. Also eliminates Paris and New York, IMO -- it has to be a city where you go - "Oh, the city X. That's where the novel Y takes place!"

Despite all that meta-gaming, I was completely blank. Just to have something down, I put Zanzibar - I'm on a Queen listening jag now. Other than knowing the country and author of Crime and Punishment (but not the spelling), I wouldn't be able to tell you a thing about the novel. Apparently Anna Karenina does involve St. Petersburg, so I guess you could sort of stumble on that with the wrong book.

Chalk a face-palm for my taking 2 or 3 clues to understand the NON-VOCABULARY category. And once I did, I hit the MRI clue, which I got, but the category name was useless because the "non" was in the clue, not the response.

NHO Surprise Symphony, so it surprised me that it was top row. Got revenge by getting the next two classicals right - although "Pastoral" was more of an educated guess, I did buzz in.

Streamed J! in realtime.
runs: Allusions
bagel: Before & After Movies
Daily Doubles: :D :D :D
trash: none. Not much available.
FJ: matched John with Paris, thinking of"Murders in the Rue Morgue". :(
The only Saint-Saens work I knew was "Danse Macabre" :|

Man! I struggled with this game like I can't remember...On the first clue I was stuck with barcrawl...never occurred to me to make it a gerund...then there was that Technology category (some of them I knew but I couldn't come up with them)...then I was so gobsmacked by learning that 36m Americans have no teeth (!?) that I couldn't bring myself to say it!...I said Irma for Angela and Brunhilde instead of Helga and Capet instead of Bourbon... And Yggdrasil instead of yew. (At least I pronounced it correctly...) I did know Carnival of the Animals to close the round...
And then came FJ....I got nowhere near it, and probably wouldn't have remembered St. Pete even if I had...

Impressive performance by John. Rough FJ. I knew the work in question couldn't be the one by Poe. He died before the Civil War. But I still thought Paris seemed like a solid guess. Then, 15 seconds in, I thought of the correct work. I've read Crime and Punishment more than once and was able to remember its setting and thus switch to the correct response. Sympathies to those who didn't know the setting and guessed Moscow. Rough FJ.

EDIT: Looking up "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" I see that it also involved the murders of two women. So for those not familiar with the death date of Poe, Paris is a really strong attractor.
