Re: Wednesday, March 24, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Jon led Amal 17400 to 1400 with 14 clues remaining. Amal closed the gap piece by piece including the big move on DD3 to prevent the lock. Even if Jon had bet all 9600 on DD2 it still would not have been enough to wrap up the game.
Dr. Oz came out on Monday and Tuesday with his jackets buttoned while today it was open in completely showing his necktie. I don't care enough to check all the Ken & Mike games, but I suspect this is very host unusual for J! and probably a lot of game shows. Even though I am not from Missouri you would have to "show me" if Alex ever did it.
Dr. Oz uses a phrase that rings unique to me with his, "Take it away" for a contestant to make the next clue selection.
The FJ! category had me trying to precall product categories and I thought the clue might be about autos, coffee or beer.
The clue had me following the instruction and I only wrote the company name, unlike Amal & Bonnie who added "effect" to their responses. I had no idea the company was that old, but my surprise was not enough to lead me elsewhere like Jon went.
It's funny to think that what if Jon was the next KJ but he got the bad FJ clue for him in game 1 instead of game 75.
During think time I had the full 30 seconds to watch the players and observed everything incorrectly. I wondered aloud, "Why are they still writing?" as it was obvious no one was writing a short response. I expected to see a bunch of misses. When Jon made quick moves at the end I thought for sure the correct inspiration hit him and he won the game. Nope all around.
Nice work by Amal to eke out the title defense when staring down a 19600 to 10000 Coryat differential.

Nothing came to me on FJ. Wondered what kind of company starts in the middle of World War II.

I would have had no idea. Never been to an IKEA store and never had a desire to do so. My mechanical skills are severely lacking so buying something I have to build myself isn’t for me. Don’t tell me it is easy to assemble. You haven’t seen me in action.

They start with consecutive letters in the alphabet. The example he gave was abacus. Double letters were not part of it.

Got FJ! on an educated guess, but this MBA has never heard of the "effect" before.

Closing in on 7000 in the archive. If a few more old games pop up in the next couple weeks Aaron Rodgers could be hosting that one.MarkBarrett wrote: ↑Wed Mar 24, 2021 3:19 pm Hump day is done: https://www.j-archive.com/showgame.php?game_id=6979

I've only got a BSBA, but yeah, I've never heard of it either. Like most others, I never would have guessed that IKEA is 70-ish years old.Robert K S wrote: ↑Wed Mar 24, 2021 5:52 pm Got FJ! on an educated guess, but this MBA has never heard of the "effect" before.

I knew the company's age at least from the founder's relatively recent obituary (probably knew it before then).econgator wrote: ↑Wed Mar 24, 2021 7:29 pmI've only got a BSBA, but yeah, I've never heard of it either. A cognitive bias like the "effect" seems like something that would have been covered on Freakonomics Radio, or one of its spinoffs, which I listen to somewhat religiously, but a Google search on "Freakonomics" and the name of the effect brings up bupkis, except for a comment on a blog post, which leads to a deadlinked article at the Harvard Business Review (but which I was able to find a copy of by searching).
I love how people can derive tenure and glory and such from naming obvious ideas.

I'm not watching "Dr." Oz's episodes, but I will still play along with FJ!
I was completely unable to process "increased value of a product to a consumer whose own labor is needed". Needed for what? The clue just felt incomplete to me and I couldn't even figure out what was being said at all.

Wow, there was a lot of California-specific clues in this game:
$200 and $400 in I LOVE A PARADE
$400 and $2000 in OTHER WALKS OF FAME
$2000 in BODIES OF WATER FILED UNDER B
Is it just me or is that more than usual?

Big Bear is not a nationally-known Resort destination. It's mostly people from LA that go there.BrigadierSolo13 wrote: ↑Wed Mar 24, 2021 8:55 pm Wow, there was a lot of California-specific clues in this game:

I'd rather cuddle then have sex. If you're into grammar, you'll understand.

Would have been pretty unfamiliar to me as well except it had showed up with nearly the identical clueing in the New York Times crossword just last Friday, 3/19:Robert K S wrote: ↑Wed Mar 24, 2021 5:52 pm Got FJ! on an educated guess, but this MBA has never heard of the "effect" before.
