43R. 3/4 on big clues. I immediately wrote Watership Down. The version I own has a farm and a rabbit on the cover. At least I think it's a farm. Real hard to get that out of my head.
Spoiler

Missed Horus and said Set. I need to review Egyptian mythology.

I did very poorly on the CAR CULTURE category. Some people really like cars but not my thing. Sat in traffic earlier but it didn't help me with the category. I did have the chance to look at a lot of cars and I thought of Jeopardy! when I saw a truck banner for Chumash Casino Resort. The Chumash tribe came up recently and I flagged it as something to learn.

I've missed more than one clue that had Ska associated with Reggae or Jamaica. Ska makes me think of Streetlight Manifesto which is a good band but doesn't make me connect anything to Reggae or Jamaica. Guess I'll go learn something.

Clues that I missed that I want to get next time are Roger Williams, courgette, ska/Laurel Aitken, A River Runs Through It, and John Krasinski. James Oglethorpe and Jim Halpert got stuck in my head even though I knew why those were wrong. I have to stop calling him Jim in my head.

It's too bad they discontinued 151. It was the strongest alcohol you could buy in California and I've gotten to make some special drinks with it. Too many people getting alcohol poisoning and suing the company I suppose.
I had a dream that I was asleep and then I woke up and Jeopardy! was on.

Category 13 wrote: Fri Apr 09, 2021 8:19 pm I've seen all three film versions of OMaM, so the clue clicked pretty well for me. (Burgess Meredith, Robert Blake, Gary Sinise)
I also saw the Broadway revival a few years ago with James Franco (and let's not forget Lon Chaney, Jr., Randy Quaid, John Malkovich, Chris O'Dowd). Didn't help me tonight. The rabbit farm is not the thing I take away from the story, though of course it's a great detail...Probably should have considered Steinbeck more after rejecting TGoW.... At least I didn't get waylaid by any English works...

They lost me at "novella". I've either read it or seen a movie about it but I don't remember the rabbit farm McGuffin. I wouldn't characterize it as a novella, whatever that means, but I missed it because I didn't know the story well enough. Fair question. Congrats to the new champion, you wagered strategically on DD2 and DD3 to stay in position on a miss and just keep the runaway in range with a strong finish.

Good job this week, Aaron. Now cut that helter skelter facial hair and do something with that hair style so you don't look like a 55 year old man . :). (I know comments on appearance are off limits, but NFL players and celebrities are fair game.) The jacket and tie dress code don't help matters, so by hiding a young(er) face it makes him look the same age as Dr. Oz. [FTR, AR is 37 years old]

This appears to be the cover that the FJ! clue referred to. I'm not sure when it was published, but it looks fairly modern.

Seems like a lot of people forgot the category. Lots of British books being mentioned in this thread.

It took me a few seconds, but then I locked in on Of Mice and Men with pretty high confidence. I love John Steinbeck.

Allegedly, it was because 151's easily flammable, but there's never been an official statement.
There's other 151 rums available in CA, though, e.g. Gosling's and Lemon Hart.

Novella: shorter than a novel, longer than a short story. Animal Farm is one as well, so picture that thickness.
...and why would you not characterize it as one if you don't know what one is?...

Bugs Bunny was definitely a help on this one, and at some point I absorbed the source of the reference so easy association.
The best thing that Neil Armstrong ever did, was to let us all imagine we were him.
Latest movies (1-10): Everything Everywhere All at Once (10), Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken (6), Black Sunday /1960/ (6), Marcel the Shell with Shoes On (7)

I knew The Flaming Lips' song was "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots," and I predicted the "ninjas" neg. Between the name Yoshimi and the karate quote (to say nothing of having it at $400), it feels like negbait to me. I think the clue would have to say something about sci-fi to have a chance at preventing someone from saying ninjas.

Also, I thought the FJ was oddly worded. One edition "shows a farm"? I assumed they were describing a cover illustration, but I couldn't be positive. Nevertheless, I got it right.

Clearly it should have said "shows the farm"... ;)

Didn't even notice but yeah "on the cover" should have been in there even if it's fairly inferrable. It's a very short clue as is so a few more words shouldn't have beeen an issue.

econgator wrote: Fri Apr 09, 2021 7:30 pm Do you think they would have taken "the Hindu Triumverate" for the clue that wanted Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva? I'm counting it, for now.
I think they likely would have needed the names. My question was would you have to have given the names in the correct order? My instinct is they would have taken them in any order but dunno if there are many (any?) past precedents of clues like this to rely on.

While I did state all three names, I wondered if Trimurthi would have been accepted as the name for all 3.

Tonight it was Dennis who looked very impressive. FJ was pretty much an Instaget. 1930s American novella showing a rabbit and a farm? I’ve heard enough humorous riffs on the “tell me about the rabbits” line to keep it in mind.

As an example of the closed captioner not having a clue, for 'Horus' they had 'Horace'. Oy.

And what was going on with Seward? It sounded fine to me.

And I think George and Lenny bunked in the cabin with the other farmhands.

I had two and only two encounters with Bacardi 151. The first involved a HS party in which nearly everyone got sick from it. The second was in grad school resulting in me falling asleep in a doorway with a paper umbrella in my hair. I for one won’t miss the stuff at all.

Aaron Rodgers simply understands how a show like Jeopardy should be hosted. A lot of talk about how prepared he was for this gig and it shows. He has just enough of a mixture of what we would expect from Alex and his own personality that he brings to the game.

I may still rank it 1. Ken; 2. Aaron.....but it is close. Aaron does have this thing called a professional football career that would seemingly make it impossible to do this full-time, but he has proven that he can do it if he wanted to pursue the world of hosting when he does hang up the spikes.

As for the game, this season has been odd. Well, for the obvious reason. Beyond that, it just feels as if we have seen a decent amount of dominating performances that don’t lead to a TOC streak. Someone who is dominant on the device one day is taken over by someone who is even faster the next.

Less "forgot the category," more "wasn't certain enough Watership Down is British not to guess it when it and the definitely-British Animal Farm are the only two names that come to mind."
Oh, what has science wrought? I sought only to turn a man into a metal-encased juggernaut of destruction powered by the unknown properties of a mysterious living crystal. How could this have all gone wrong?
