That 3,000 mile radius doesn't exactly narrow it down, does it? Anything from Southern Africa around to the whole of East/Southeast Asia could reasonably fit.

Right prefix, wrong country. I put South Vietnam, figuring that the April Revolution had to do with the Vietnam War.

Perhaps I anchored onto the correct answer -- South Korea -- for a misguided reason. I didn't think in terms of which countries (former territories) gained their independence soon after WW II, but which countries first came into being as distinct entities, and the only ones that came to mind were Israel, N/S Korea and E/W Germany.

I considered SK but 1960 didn't seem right. I put Cuba instead.

Whoops. Misquote. I think the 5,000 number still holds, though, right? Namibia, Botswana, Mozambique and maybe Zimbabwe, along with the Koreas, China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Cambodia...

1948 led me to the Indian subcontinent, and India is large enough that it would be weird to talk about it as a certain distance from some other place, so Sri Lanka canr to mind. I recalled there was an uprising in Sri Lanka, so that felt right enough to seal the deal for me.RandyG wrote: ↑Tue May 25, 2021 11:51 am Perhaps I anchored onto the correct answer -- South Korea -- for a misguided reason. Turns out Sri Lanka did gain independence in 1948, but the uprising was in 1971...

Lost a tough one on defense yesterday 6(5)-7(5). We both missed the same question ("Memories of a Catholic Girlhood").

I figured they were talking about Rush the band and Rush Limbaugh the radio guy and then I wrote down John Hancock. I figured the book was called something like The Rush: How Signing First Secured John Hancock's Legacy
I had a dream that I was asleep and then I woke up and Jeopardy! was on.

I might have had a chance at Kirov if I had approached it from the ballet angle instead of the history angle. But I didn’t know that Kirov was named for a person.
I missed Rush with similar logic as MattKnowles. I also had wagon wheels under consideration but guessed bowties.
I got the other three but thought for sure I had lost, given how badly I botched the three that I missed. But I managed a 4(3)-3(2) win.

I went with Indonesia, which became independent around 1948 and had some kind of a coup in the 1960s. The problems with that answer are (1) Sukarno wasn't ousted until 1967; (2) considering his politics, he wouldn't have gotten the red-carpet treatment by the U.S.; and (3) it was wrong. This Is Kirk! wrote: ↑Tue May 25, 2021 10:37 am I went through lots of countries mentally for that question yesterday. I figured it was most likely somewhere in East Asia. Ended up putting down Malaysia. Ended up with a 6(5)-6(5) tie.

Yeah, that was my problem. I know about the Kirov ballet. I didn't realize Kirov was part of the Communist revolution. I guessed Trotsky.

I'm also in this boat but nho kirov. I'm really struggling this season, lowest q% so far in quite a while. I will not be long in B....seaborgium wrote: ↑Thu May 27, 2021 3:39 pmIf the question had said Leningrad (instead of St. Petersburg), I wouldn't have WAGged Lenin.

I guess my military time helped. I'm familiar with both the old Kirov-class cruiser and the newer nuclear-powered Kirov-class cruiser, so I figure he had to be some kind of hero of the people. This Is Kirk! wrote: ↑Thu May 27, 2021 10:19 amYeah, that was my problem. I've hit on more guesses this season than the last three combined. Yellow for the Chinese geography. Catholic girlhood.
The transuranium elements got me again. I went with Ytterby even though I had serious doubts that Sweden had "states". Six or eight rare earths came from there and there had to be some reason for Erbium and Terbium and Yttrium to be non-redundant.
A few dumb misses, but I probably don't get Reese's pieces even after you told me Skittles was wrong. That shot ClassicRoadster's easy 3 he assigned me to make a double loss.
I knew the country was either Suriname or Guyana, but couldn't pull the city name which I didn't actually need if I RTFQ.
On the Bizarro front, it is damn hard to give 3's away, but KerryOakie and NoWhammies10 are doing pretty good with KO getting 7 of 8 so far, and a current streak of 5. After MD9 we will have played everybody once, and maybe someone will be able to run the table for the next round. I'm thinking the "winner" will be based on most threes given, longest streak of threes given, and lowest DE. It's kind of fun to chill and play with the big kids. When in doubt, I just assign the Bizarro match so each question mirrors the competitive match with 3/0, 2/1, 1/2,and 0/3.
