Re: Wednesday, July 7, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Nikole had $3800 after running TOYS & GAMES and 23 J! round clues remaining. Nikole was still at $3800 when the J! round ended. By the time the FJ! category was revealed I mentally had Nikole down for a get as she seemed to like what I call the fun type stuff of movies, TV, pop culture, etc. while Keshav had me expecting a miss from him as he seemed to do better on the more academic type clues.
Courtney once again played a game from a third place position, yet the 8th win was possible if the FJ! clue had been outside of Nikole's solving range since she bet way above Courtney's possible best of 12400.
The result almost seemed destined to occur as two players had the last name Shah, so go with the Villanueva.
Courtney's score was not going to be above the needed 11800 without a DD though she did not help herself with gaffes like the mercury sulfide as a Best Picture winner and pluralizing the Chicago dept. store guy. Good on Sanjay being all over that second error to not cost a player the rebound chance.
Keshav missed DD3 and even on a solve he was not going to lock out Nikole. Strange that he missed such a gettable DD while getting the more difficult one of DD2.
The FJ! category had me skip the precall game to play the clue straight up with no warm-ups in the bullpen.
When I saw the clue the right group came to me, everything fit and I matched the ladies for the solve.

This is the sixth Jeopardy! episode with two contestants with the same last name.
I've posted about the other five in Obscure Record Holders thread.

I almost said The Police myself, having recently watched Bee Movie with my son, which features a bit with Sting being upbraided on the witness stand.

Not so much making it plural but making it possessive. Chicagoans love to make names possessives on businesses even when it's not part of the official name. So much so that what was originally "Marshall Field & Co." became "Marshall Field's" before being swallowed up by Macy's. They even do it to business names that are not (AFAIK) people's names - I cringe when I hear regional grocery chain "Jewel" called "Jewel's" or when flying, hear pilots give their call sign as "United's 123" or "American's 456" (aircraft call signs are formally defined and the "apostrophe s" is not part of it). Plus I'll hear Chicago locals butcher names of businesses that have made it clear there is no possessive ending to their name by calling businesses such as Nordstrom "Nordstrom's" or calling Meijer (another regional grocery store chain) "Meijer's".MarkBarrett wrote: ↑Wed Jul 07, 2021 1:44 pm Courtney's score was not going to be above the needed 11800 without a DD though she did not help herself with gaffes like ... pluralizing the Chicago dept. store guy.

Re: Wednesday, July 7, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
I think we've talked about this here before, but that was part of the old name for the chain (which further included "Thrifty Acres"). When somebody calls it "Meijer's", it might not be so much that they don't know what they're talking about, as that they're old-timers. EDIT: With one minute of Googling, maybe the Thrifty Acres stores didn't use the apostrophe-S, but there were definitely predecessor stores that did.

Completely sunk on this. I am aware that U2 exists, but somehow in all of this I've never picked up a single fact about them. I somehow thought they stopped having hits in the 90s.

Wasn’t sure Bono was a nickname but it was my best guess.

Re: Wednesday, July 7, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
I have little knowledge of rock bands and never listened to a U2 album in my life and can't name any of their songs (though I'm sure I'd recognize some). Still this was almost an instaget, so I call this one of the easiest FJs of the season. I did think of The Police (I know a few of their songs), but knew that they haven't recorded together in a long time.
To complete my cluelessness, I spelled it U-2...

U2 and the Police are likely my two least favorite artists of all time. Instaget FJ though. I wasn't aware they were still topping the charts but I remember the brouhaha about one of their albums auto loading onto iPhones a few years back which at least suggests they were actively making music in the last few years.

Real name Paul Hewson, nickname comes from the Latin Bono Vox (good voice). He's a near-contemporary of mine from Dublin - when I was a teenager we first had the Boomtown Rats to be excited about, and then U2.

44R. 3/4 on big clues. Missed Three Musketeers and guessed Les Miserables. Lucky guess on FJ. Just a couple months ago, on April 27, Bono and his original name were on my list of things to learn next time. Helped me guess right today.
For DD3 a wager around 13,000 would have been cool.
Some clues I missed that I want to get next time are Lionel, comparative, Carey Mulligan, Marshall Field, and drupe.

Truth be told I was a huge U2 fan in high school and into college, but Bono tends to grate on me a bit these days.
The Police's last studio album was Synchronicity which was released way back in 1983.

They haven't put out a good album since Achtung Baby in the early '90s, and only a handful of good songs.TenPoundHammer wrote: ↑Wed Jul 07, 2021 8:12 pm Completely sunk on this.
