A.J. Motley, a student of diagnostic sonography from Wylie, Texas (whose 1-day cash winnings total $20,801)

OPENING REMARKS
Alex: Thank you, Johnny. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to our show. Just before A.J. was introduced by Johnny, I was backstage looking at him, and he did one of these... [inhales deeply] took a deep breath to help him relax and get ready for the competition, I guess. Laura and Tracey, are you going to make it tough on him? Absolutely. We're about to find out, aren't we? Good luck. Here we go. The Jeopardy! Round for you. And these are the categories...

CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: You're gonna love this one. Tracey Rhys from New York is in the Order of the Blessed Saint Scully the Enigmatic. What on Earth is that?

Tracey: Yes, well, it's, uh, some people would call it an Internet cult. We prefer to think of it as a cyber-abbey, uh, devoted to the wisdom of the character of Dana Scully from The X-Files.

Alex: I see.

Tracey: The brothers and sisters in Saint Scully.

Alex: I made one brief appearance on that series years and years ago, and people still ask me about that.

Tracey: Oh, I--believe me, the sisters will want to know all about my time on Jeopardy! and what Alex is really like.

Alex: Okay, good.

Alex: Laura Sikes Jambon.

Laura: Hi.

Alex: French for "ham". From Rochester. Had a pygmy goat in college.

Laura: I did.

Alex: Why?

Laura: Uh, for the cuteness factor. Yeah.

Alex: Well, there are a lot of other things that are cute. How 'bout a little cat?

Laura: I had a little cat, and one time my little goat--

Alex: But the goat ate it?

Laura: --ate a chunk of her fur. She didn't enjoy that.

Alex: No.

Laura: Billy also enjoyed eating a lot of things, like a 3-wick candle, an entire bag of Hershey Kisses, and unfortunately, he met his demise by eating a bag of Quikrete.

[Laughter]

Laura: [Turning to audience, reacting indignantly to their laughter] That's not--!

[Turning to audience]

Alex: Wait, wait a minute. Was it a 60-pound or an 80-pound bag, because...

Laura: Alex, you're being insensitive.

[Laughter]

Alex: [Laughing hysterically] You're right.

[Laughter]

Alex: Uh... [laughing] A.J., I don't want to talk to you.

[Laughter]

Alex: Uh, who's in charge here? You have command of the board. Make a--make a selection.

[Apparent edit]

Alex: All right.

A.J.: Uh, let's go with, uh...

Alex: I can't follow that. You can't follow that.

JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
A.J. found the Daily Double on the 19th clue. A.J. had $2,800, Laura had $3,600, and Tracey was at $1,000. A.J. wagered $800.

NOT SO GAY PAREE $800: In his 52 B.C. "Commentaries", he wrote that the Parisii burned their town rather than surrender to him

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
LET'S EAT THAI $1000: Used as a condiment, nam pla is a type of sauce made from fermented these
(Laura: What are soybeans?)

NOT SO GAY PAREE $600: In the 3rd century Barbarians wiped out Roman Paris; the people fled to what's now this Seine ile crossed by the Pont Neuf

I'M JUST SWAMPED! $1000: Once home to runaway slaves, this "Great" swamp in Va. & N.C. appears in Harriet Beecher Stowe's "Dred"
(Alex: Less than a minute now, A.J., to complete the round.)

ELECTION YEAR BEFORE & AFTER $1000: National Wildlife Federation's magazine for kids that's a conservative ex-senator from Pennsylvania

SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
A.J.: $5,200
Laura: $5,000
Tracey: $2,400

DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND CATEGORIES
30s ROCK (4/5)
NIXON'S ENEMIES LIST (5/5)
HOW NOVEL! (3/4, including 1 correct Daily Double)
DON'T MESS WITH TAXES (3/3)
THE TELL-TALE HEART (5/5, including 1 correct Daily Double)
"OGRAPHY" (4/5)

THE RIGHTS & THE WRONGS
A.J.: 15 R (including 1 DD), 0 W
Laura: 7 R (including 1 rebound and 1 DD), 1 W
Tracey: 2 R, 3 W

Clues revealed: 27
Triple Stumpers: 3
Double Jeopardy! Round Potential Lach Trash: $4,800

FIRST DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
A.J. snagged the next Daily Double on the 18th clue. A.J. had $17,600, Laura had $7,000, and Tracey was at $2,400. A.J. wagered $1,600.

THE TELL-TALE HEART $2000: An irregular heartbeat may be caused by an imbalance of these ions that conduct current, such as sodium

SECOND DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
It was Laura who snatched up the last Daily Double of the game on the 23rd clue. A.J. had $20,400, Laura had $8,600, and Tracey was at $1,200. Laura made it a True Daily Double, wagering $8,600.

HOW NOVEL! $2000: "If this alleged report is true, that is the last of Roy Hobbs in organized baseball"
(Alex: And we're running out of time, Laura, and you can see the score. You have less than 50% of A.J.'s total.)
(Laura: Well, I'd like to make it a True Daily Double, Alex.)

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE DOUBLE JEOPARDY! ROUND
30s ROCK $1200: "Caught Up In You" was a No. 1 mainstream hit (though ironically not with a bullet) for this Southern rock group
(Tracey: What is Guns N' Roses?)

"OGRAPHY" $2000: The sociological study of populations
(Tracey: What is ethnography?)

HOW NOVEL! $1600: "The answer to the great question... of life, the universe and everything... is... forty two"
(Laura: What is... uh... uh...)

SCORES ENTERING FINAL JEOPARDY!
A.J.: $22,400
Laura: $17,600
Tracey: $1,200

FINAL JEOPARDY! CATEGORY
THE UNITED NATIONS

VENUSIAN MONOLOGUES/MARTIAN CHRONICLES
Three-quarters for first place. Shore's Conjecture.
A.J.: Wager $12,801 to cover Laura, but no more than $19,999 so as not to fall behind Tracey's doubled score. If you're a fan of shoretegic wagering, you might risk $10,401.
Laura: You ought to wager between $4,801 (venusian) and $8,000 (martian), thereby safely covering a $0 bet by A.J..
Tracey: Too bad for you, Tracey, your score is less than A.J.'s score minus Laura's score. Unless they both commit an egregious wagering error, you've no hope of moving into first place. Wager as much as you desire, but remember, you'll have better chances of advancing to second place if you have a larger sum left over on a Triple Stumper.

FINAL JEOPARDY! CLUE
Of the 6 official languages used at the U.N., this one is the last alphabetically

FINAL SCORES
Tracey: $1,200 + $1,000 = $2,200 (What is Spanish?) (3rd place: $1,000)
Laura: $17,600 + $14,000 = $31,600 (What is Russian Spanish) (2nd place: $2,000)
A.J.: $22,400 + $12,801 = $35,201 (What is Spanish?) (2-day champion: $56,002)

Total Potential Lach Trash: $8,400

GAME DYNAMICS

Combined Coryat: $35,000

BATTING AVERAGES
A.J.: 26/60 = .433
Laura: 19/59 = .322
Tracey: 7/58 = .121
Team: 52/63 = .825

MISCELLANEOUS INTERESTING CLUES
30 ROCK $200: The daughter of this "30 Rock" creator inspired a catchphrase for Liz Lemon: "I want to go to there"
(A.J.: Who is Lorne Michaels?)

LET'S EAT THAI $400: A basic ingredient in Thai cuisine is prik kee noo, a small, spicy one of these named for its resemblance to a mouse dropping
(A.J: What is a [*]?)
(Alex: Be more specific?)
(A.J.: What is a... Thai [*]?)
(Alex: Well, we'll give you it on [*]. It's a chili [*]).

I'M JUST SWAMPED! $200: Most of the small islands in Botswana's Okavango Swamp were formed by mounds built by these insects
(Laura: What are ants?)

ELECTION YEAR BEFORE & AFTER $600: Paul Reubens' childlike (& childish) alter ego who once ran Godfather's Pizza
[The end-of-round signal sounds.]

DON'T MESS WITH TAXES $800: In 1789 the First Congress passed a law setting up these, placed on goods imported into the United States
(Tracey: What is a stamp tax?)

THE TELL-TALE HEART $1600: (Sarah of the Clue Crew shows an anatomical animation on the monitor.) Palpitations accompanied by dizziness & shortness of breath may indicate a problem with these parts of the heart, such as the aortic & pulmonary ones, that permit blood flow in only one direction

Very gutsy move by Laura. In a way, you gotta admire the way she called out Alex during her interview. Oh, and her "tdd" bet wasn't so bad either.

I'm happy for the champ, since that would've been an awful way to lose (not that there are any good ways).

Instaget FJ. Haven't they asked a similar question before, or am I thinking of a TD (or both)?

That game was tons of fun, and not just because I only missed 7 questions or so the whole time. I'm mad that I couldn't come up with FJ, but now I'll never forget the UN's official languages.

Laura, wow, big bet almost paid off. Glad you could make it exciting and keep it from being a stomping. How many other contestants have made Alex legit crack up?

I tuned in just for FJ. I approached it by mentally compiling a list of popular languages, and when I got to Spanish, I figured it was probably the correct response.

I was able to name five of the six, could not think of Arabic. I spent most of the time hoping the sixth wasn't Vietnamese.

German isn't a UN language because the Germans weren't invited to the UN formation, same with Italian and Japanese.

Guns n Roses?

You're not missing anything.

If I had 50 cents for every math question I got right, I'd have $6.30 by now.

Agreed. If she had made it to the ToC then she would be a shoo-in to be invited back for a tournament like the Million Dollar Masters. That's only the second time that I have ever seen Alex skip over a contestant in the interview segment, except the other time that I saw it happen it was the contestant at podium 1 who impressed everyone, and he skipped both of the other contestants.

I thought that this board was well written, but I found the J! round to be hard and DJ to be ridiculously easy.

Laura's TDD wasn't gutsy. It was what she had to do. Well, I wouldn't have made it a TDD; I would have left like $200 to ensure that I could play FJ, but still. Props to her for hunting it and for making the big wager. However, her FJ wager was bad, though it ended up not mattering.

For FJ I was debating between Vietnamese and Spanish, and wasn't sure if Vietnamese was a United Nations language. I ended up guessing Vietnamese. D'oh!

I would like to see him play a tougher board, but so far I am sold on A.J. I like his fast style of play.
