My concern is with the show's time slots and how this additional tournament could leave several in the contestant pool high and dry. But it's also hard to shake the mental image of Michael Davies pointing at basically every S39 champion and saying, "You get to come back! You get to come back, too! You there, with the interrobang earrings? You're back, too!" There are several single to three time champions I wanted to see return (albeit with the Second Chance tourney in mind rather than a new one), so...it's a mixed bag for me!

He was given a golden goose called WWTBAM and killed that one. Not sure why we should be surprised.

Nah. Jeopardy! is pretty much guaranteed of staying on the air until at least 2033 at this point; all bets are off if the broadcast networks lose NFL rights at their expiration, though.

Same season? No. Try a few years later at the soonest, and that's only if things go really south.

A special Thursday episode of the podcast is more than I care to recap, but this Reddit post does the job well:
Spoiler
spoiler in case the link makes it a huge post size here.

My comments: The CWC now fills in the blank about how the postseason will work between the SCC and the ToC. I how many 1x to 3x champs will decline for being satisfied with how their time on J! already went and not needed a new experience.

No mention was made of the HSRT candidates who were not one of the 27 of 30 who played. If J! is going to have Emma Arnold back the CWC seems like a good spot.

46 weeks is indeed more than most game shows do and I'm fine with 6 weeks of rerun. 52 weeks is not necessary.

I'm going to mark in the archive the early S39 4x champ for the games played as it seems even more certain now a ToC invite is coming.

But what about the losers of the Second Chance competition and the Champions Wildcard? Shouldn't there then be another tournament just for them?

I know one 3-day champ who, with 100% certainty, will accept their invitation (...assuming it comes).

I had a hunch that a play-in event was coming given what we knew about the desire to expand the postseason and run said postseason straight through ToC in November, I couldn't think of anything else that could possibly fill that gap. But certainly not at this scope. My thought was that they could push back the ToC to start one week earlier than last year, expand SCC to 3-weeks and mimic the HSRT bracket, and then fill the last 3 weeks with a play-in with however many top non-auto qualifiers fit in a 3 week event. Curious to see how this will look.

Yep. This essentially cements Mr. Davies as a poor successor to Mr. Friedman for me. Why Sony never went the obvious route and bothered to pick someone with actual show experience (such as Sarah) is beyond me. Sure, Davies brought Millionaire to the US, but I think that deserves an asterisk (in sports terms) given his treatment of it.

As I said, just because he's not the producer who resigned in disgrace doesn't mean he turned out much better when it comes to the job he was hired for. IMHO he should stick to his sports stuff.

Initial reaction from me: "You do? Cool! Three time champs, unite!...

...ohh. Wait a moment."

Guess we don't have to wish you retro good luck! Just the last two words will do. But most importantly, have fun.

Michael Davies is ruining my sanity.

Shoulda made Jimmy the host AND the EP.

So why did you make Jimmy your preference for both roles anyway, out of curiosity? (For the record, my hosting preference is Laura Coates, and my EP preference is either Sarah or Lisa/Rocky.)

Also, it wouldn't be unprecedented: Bob Barker handled both positions on Price from 1988 until his retirement. Plus it would've saved Sony millions every year.

The ratio has improved a bit over the last couple of weeks, but statistically a tournament made up of 1-, 2-, and 3-day champs from Season 39 is going to skew heavily male, unless the ratio continues to move closer to even. Having an event in which women will be, shall we say, "less than" visible for weeks is going to be very unpopular for a LOT of people.

I'm currently showing a 55/45 split.

My back of the envelope math counts 11 women regular game champs and 20 dudes, 7 of which have qualified already, so 11/13.(No guarantee those numbers are correct, but they're close enough.) Not the problem I thought it was. Thanks for the correction.

I have it as 22 men (7 of whom are 4+ game champions), 12 women; thus for 3 or fewer game champions, 15/27 = 55.6%.

Not for nothing, but do we know what the prizes are going to look like in the new tournament?

Second Chance probably saved them a bit of money. Each week had a $35,000 first prize, $20,000 and $10,000 for the other two finalists, and $2,000 and $1,000 for second and third place in each of the three semifinal games. $74,000 total. Whereas in a normal week, they'd pay out five winning totals, five second-place $2,000 prizes, and five third-place $1,000 totals. With the Season 39 average regular-play winning score at $27,309, that makes a normal week's payout $151,545. Stretch that out to maybe eight weeks, where you're selling the main reward as a ticket to the ToC rather than actual money, and that looks pretty cost-effective.

(Granted, I have no Idea how much the prizes make up out of the show's overall budget, but still, it can't be hurting them.)

4/3/23 "What are Contestant Interviews?" (28:30)

Buzzy and Sarah host and Buzzy got to do the opening.
Buzzy took the Anytime test on March 30th and finished in about 7 minutes. 15,873 took the test.

Sarah's daughter is on "podcouch" sick during spring break.

The Champions Wild Card will feed "a few" people into the ToC with no exact number given yet. Sarah's sees it a possible Cinderella story to go from SCC to ToC.

On April 26 Buzzy will host new podcast "This is Jeopardy!" and he has recorded some episodes already.

Amy Schneider book coming out in October is "In the Form of a Question".

Masters will air May 8, 9, 10 & 12 (M-Tu-W-F with no Th), May 15, 16, & 17 (M-Tu-W) & May 22, 23, & 24 (M, Tu, W) for 10 eps.

Mark Barrett note: I'll be watching all three hours of Survivor finale on the 24th before Masters.

9:35 March 27 week of games:
Spoiler
Kevin's hair (or mane) got a mention.
Sarah mentioned the headlines about "Ken Jennings Robbed Kevin" in association with the Gethsemane ruling when Kevin made it sound like it ended as "-dee".

People loved Lisa's chats and facial expressions and Lisa added "please clap" because she thought she lost.

Jordan from Wednesday game has a "Disneyland Forever" podcast and invited Sarah & Buzzy to go to Disneyland with him. Around the time of GOAT Buzzy & Ken did a guy's trip to Disneyland.

Lisa's "Goodbye cruel world" got a mention and Lisa will be back for the CWC.

Sharon Stone's sister Kathryn came in third when she played and there is a third sister who is supposedly the smartest and has not tried out yet. There was a mention (hard to know where on the joking to serious scale) about a siblings reunion in mentioning Ray Lalonde and his brother trying to get on J!, the mom & two daughters as they were called (the Donegans), father and child (Gus & John).

The segment detoured into a discussion about the chat segment as Lisa was ready to lose on J! to be done with the segment since she had no more stories. Buzzy understood as that portion of the show is not his favorite and can see the chats as annoying.

Sarah played defense counsel for gems like Brittany's SMBA cat story and it's a chance for people eating dinner while watching to get a bite of food.

Buzzy called chats "bygone game show relic". Sarah sees the interviews as a chance for viewers to connect with the contestants.

The hosts wonder how the chats fit in with Michael Davies seeing J! as a sport. Buzzy would support props for the chats as was done in one of the Trebek test pilot eps.

Buzzy worked in movie title references for player Sharon Stone using "Basic Instinct", "Total Recall", "Casino" and "The Quick and the Dead".

It was noted that Sharon was the 4th female champ in a row.

As part of the talk about siblings on show the hosts talked about their own kids. Buzzy's kids could not get on unless Buzzy dies or is fired. Sarah's kids care more about hosting or announcing than playing and they as well would not be eligible.
23:30 Question from Derek who took the test May 21, 2022 and again on March 30, 2023 and which is his eligibility date to take it again. It's now reset to 3/30/23 for a year to wait.

For next year's JeoparDAY! the plan is to show another never-been-seen ep. of J! and the classics from Pluto TV got a mention that have shown Buzzy games.

Next week: The April 3 week of games.
