Alex: Thank you, Johnny. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen. Well, who's it going to be--Paul, Keith, or Jason? Which of these three will join Colby with a "C" and Kristin with a "K" in our two-day finals match next week? Let's start finding out. Good luck, players. AFI LIFE ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS $600: In 2006 Mike Meyers wore a kilt to honor this recipient
(Keith: Who is Billy Connolly?)

SCORES AT THE FIRST BREAK
Paul: $2,400
Keith: $1,000
Jason: $800

CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: Welcome back. When you're a contestant on Jeopardy! you're trying to look good not only for our viewers, but also for members of your family, as Paul Nelson discovered when he, in one of his earlier appearances, missed a clue about...

Paul: About, well, Canada but specifically the Georgia Strait. The category was Georgia, and I answered something that was not right and realized afterwards not only does my grandmother live across the Georgia Strait, I've crossed it at least four times in my life. So, Granny, I'm sorry.

[Laughter]

Alex: Well, you took a long time to apologize.

[Laughter]

Alex: Keith Whitener from Charlotte, North Carolina. Gonna use his money, considerable amount of money--you had $147,000 in your initial appearances, and you're gonna buy a house.

Keith: Yeah.

Alex: Where?

Keith: That's a good question, actually. We're living in the D.C. area now, so there's not a lot of good, cheap--

Alex: You're not gonna buy a house for $147,000 in Washington, D.C. So, how about some place in Virginia?

Keith: Well, it depends on how I do on the rest of the tournament.

Alex: Oh. Oh, yes. I completely forgot. My bad. My bad. Sorry about that.

[Laughter]

Alex: Jason Keller is a tutor from New Jersey. The lead singer of a rock group became a fan of yours.

Jason: Yes, yes. The Magnetic Fields, an indie group, their lead singer, Stephin Merritt, actually watched all my shows in a bar, and through some mutual acquaintances, we happened to meet up, and we had lunch and hung out in lower Manhattan for a day.

Alex: Well, wait a minute, now. If he watched all of your shows in a bar--you were on for nine days. Did he spend nine days in a bar?

Jason: Well, actually, I don't know if he watched all of the shows in a bar, but he watched all of my shows and was a big fan.

Alex: We won't put you on the spot with regard to him.

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
AFI LIFE ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS $800: This 2-time best actor Oscar winner of the '90s is the youngest honoree ever

GADGETS $1000: Despite its name, you don't throw this "box", you use it to watch TV anywhere on your laptop, phone or tablet

GADGETS $800: The solar bikini uses strips of this "light current" film to charge up your iPod while you tan; looks good on me, too

LITERARY WHOSE WHAT? $800: 1979: "Smiley's" these

LITERARY WHOSE WHAT? $1000: 2001: "The Bone-Setter's" this

SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Jason: $4,800
Keith: $2,200
Paul: $800

0/5 in Literary Whose What. NHO any of those books.

I got the $200s in AFI and Coats of Arms, which was one more clue than I thought I'd get in either.

3/5 in Veggies. I always thought okra was the big green in soul food, not collard greens, and I've NHO chard.

Pluperfect was my only miss in "Perfect".

I actually lost $400 in DJ!, thanks to 3 right near the top of the board… then misreading Letter for $2000. (I said OK instead of just K.)

Pasteur was right on the tip of my tongue, but it kept morphing itself into "Lister" and I couldn't morph it back.

I saw no possible way to figure out the Epsilon clue (Letter for $1200) that damn quickly. ("Alpha, beta… no. Let's hop around. Gamma, zeta, omega, iota, mu, pi, chi, kappa… what the hell, don't they all end with vowels?!")

I at least recognized some of those drummer names, but couldn't put a single one to a band.

Italy has defined regions?

I thought it was sort of a weak first round with some surprising triple stumpers, but Keith was certainly impressive in DJ, even aside from the big DD bet.

FJ an instaget for me as soon as I saw "shadow".

A good game to watch. Props to Keith for the big DD wager that helped him get a lock.

Picked up some Lach Trash on Smiley's People and Bone-setter's Daughter.

No chance on FJ.

What wonderful betting by Keith. It does for me what Viagra does for others. And rebounding very nice from a sluggish start by all to really run away with the game.

For some reason I just knew Travis Barker was going to be the $2000 in Drummers.

Missed FJ. Umbria makes totally sense but I spent the time trying to fit words like "chiaroscuro" into the name of an Italian region when I should have just approached it by straight geography.

The finale should be interesting. I couldn't tell you who the favorite should be.

Finally, good players having confidence in their abilities to take proper advantage of DD's. Sweet.

Regardless, Ketih was by far the best player in this game. He deserved to win.

Although there was no reason for Jason and Paul not to bet everything on FJ.

DD's in Jeopardy are like blanks in Scrabble, In Scrabble you either bingo or score 60+ points with a blank every time. Gotta go for the big score in Jeopardy with the DD's unless of course you detest the category. Which should be rare if you're properly prepared.

Ran Scientists, literary whose what, monoliths and instaget final jeopardy after seeing 'shadow.' Great game by Keith and well deserved win. Kristin is going to have 2 very tough games against colby and Keith; I'm pulling for keith to win.

Looks like Keith took some advice from Omar Little: "You come at the king you best not miss."

That was damn impressive.

I wonder if Keith wanted to say "Sook it, TRE-bek!" after missing that first TDD?

(later)
Wow.... guess he didn't let it affect him. Hope either Jason or Paul got the license of that truck that just plowed right through them! That was da***d impressive, as astonishing a semi-final performance I've seen.

Got FJ on a semi-guess, but that still leaves me only 2/5 on the week.

Should be a good final. I think I'm rooting for Kristin, but after Keith's showing today, it's gonna be a tough climb.

Keith's play was almost Roger Craig-like. I greatly enjoyed watching him.

On FJ! I tried my Spanish to Italian method, but couldn't make the sombra -> Umbria leap. Just too weak in the category to think of any regions, even given some direction.

I have no idea who to root for. I really like all three finalists and their play in the tournament.

That was a most enjoyable game and a very impressive performance by Keith. I really liked the way he took control of the game with the $10K DD wager and then just kept on building from there. You could almost hear the wind being sucked out of Jason's and Paul's sails as they watched the game slip out of grasp. I haven't run the numbers yet, but I think Keith's lock was safe even while there were still several clues on the board.

His FJ response was also a nice way to score some brownie points with his wife, and I enjoyed Alex's witty retort, "I hope Rachel is your wife's name!" Congratulations on the win, Keith. I'm really looking forward to the finals!!

It turns out, not hopping around would have helped, as epsilon is the 5th letter. (Also, not sure why you're calling it "the epsilon clue" since omicron and upsilon also exist. Admittedly epsilon is probably the most used of the three, by far.)

Quite famously, yes. Even if you didn't know this, why would it seem like such a shocking fact that a very old country has defined regions?

It was Latin (umbra) -> Italian for me, ergo instaget.

Agreed. It's going to be an extremely pleasant final to watch, because I'll be very happy with any outcome.

Any that I'd have heard of?

ETA: Yep, Sardinia, Sicily, Tuscany are the only ones I've heard of. But I didn't realize they were specifically defined regions, any more specifically than "Up North" is to a Detroit native.

They're the closest thing Italy has to provinces/states. (Although Italy actually *has* provinces, they're more like what we in the US would call a county.) The modern state of Italy was formed by the union of those formerly independent regions.

Another fantastic game! Congrats to Keith on the win, and to Jason and Paul on their strong showings in the tournament!

The writers came through once again. I really liked this board, even though I struggled with the contestants in the J! round. I knew that "Gadgets" would be a rough category for me.

I made a lucky guess on the "Sean Connery" DD. I was thinking that would be an embarrassing miss, but I didn't know any other old time Scottish actors. I also picked up the Lach trash on Tom Hanks.

I loved that there was a clue on Travis Barker. I am proud to say that I still love Blink 182!

And I am SO jealous that Jason Keller got to meet Stephin Merritt as the result of his appearance on the show! That's just more inspiration for me to get on there and win some games.

Jason looked like he overcame his buzzer woes in his QF game, but he just couldn't keep it going in the semifinals. But I am super happy for Keith!

I had no idea on FJ. For some reason I locked in on the word "nimbus" and just couldn't get off of it. I have to wonder if Keith knew the FJ clue.

I, too, have no idea who to pick to win in the finals. I will just sit back and enjoy it!

Now THAT is how you do it, friends. Keith is the BOSS!- best of luck to him in the finals! You can go on and on about wagering strategy, blah, blah, but it comes down to guts, balls, cajones, love of the game-whatever! Just do it! It is, after all, only a game...
