Kathy Nitschke, a customer-service representative from Greenbush, Maine
Jonathan Van Balen, an international marketing specialist from Lexington, Kentucky
Rachel Gordon, an attorney from Washington, D.C. (whose 1-day cash winnings total $7,400)

OPENING REMARKS
Alex: Thank you, Johnny. And thank you, ladies and gentlemen. Well, it doesn't happen very often --does it? --but it did on yesterday's program. Two players going into Final Jeopardy! with about $20,000, having to guard against each other with their wagers. And Rachel in a distant third. She had about $6,000. And she winds up winning. And that's neat. Took it to the guys. Jonathan and Kathy, welcome aboard today. Good luck to you. Let's go to work. Here are the categories for this first round, the Jeopardy! Round.

JEOPARDY! ROUND CATEGORIES
FIRST NAMES IN THE DICTIONARY (4/5)
TECHNOLOGY (5/5, including 1 correct Daily Double)
POP--THE QUESTION (5/5)
DOUBLE DOUBLE LETTERS (5/5)
THE BURGERS (5/5)
OF CALAIS (2/5)

THE RIGHTS & THE WRONGS
Rachel: 12 R (including 1 DD), 1 W
Jonathan: 8 R, 2 W
Kathy: 6 R (including 1 rebound), 2 W

Jonathan: $2,000
Rachel: $1,800
Kathy: $1,200

CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: Kathy Nitschke is from Maine, and for 25 years she worked for the Maine Forest Service. She's now retired. And you raise chickens at your home?

Kathy: We do. They're independent women, and they have their own bank account. They don't need a rooster.

Alex: They don't. Hello! How long have you been enjoying this pastime?

Kathy: Oh, about 20 years.

Alex: Oh, for that long? See, I heard something on the radio here in Los Angeles this morning --it is no longer legal to have chickens within the city limits in Los Angeles. But you don't have to worry about that.

Kathy: No.

Alex: Do you get a lot of eggs?

Kathy: We do.

Alex: Okay, good for you.

Alex: Jonathan Van Balen is from Lexington, Kentucky. And this young man has been doing origami since you were how old?

Jonathan: Since I was 6 years old.

Alex: Okay. I was once taught to do a small crane, about this big. You know, if you get enough lessons, even I can learn to do that. Now, you can do all kinds of stuff. And the smallest origami you did was?

Jonathan: I did a crane that's no taller than the, like, half of my fingernail.

Alex: Oh, gosh. How long did it take you to put that together?

Jonathan: I don't remember. I know I had to use tweezers at the end. I've had it for maybe 15 years.

Alex: Good for you. All right.

Alex: Rachel Gordon is an attorney. She's from Washington, D.C. And this young lady tore her ACL a few years ago and still pursues alpine skiing.

Rachel: I tore my ACL. It was the last day of our trip, so I didn't miss too much.

[Both chuckle]

Alex: It doesn't count as much if it happens on the last day. Right.

JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Rachel found the Daily Double on the 18th clue. Rachel had $2,000, Jonathan had $1,000, and Kathy was at $1,200. Rachel made it a True Daily Double, wagering $2,000.

TECHNOLOGY $400: (Kelly of the Clue Crew shows a diagram of a ship & a submarine on the monitor.) To hide a warship's engine noises, Prairie/Masker technology on the ship creates waves of bubbles, an effective tactic for outwitting the passive type of this detection device

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
FIRST NAMES IN THE DICTIONARY $400: Now calling one of these youths trained for knighthood
(Jonathan: What is a bobby?)
(Kathy: What is a stewart?)

OF CALAIS $600: The burghers of Calais were 6 men who offered themselves as hostages to get the English to lift this in 1347
(Kathy: What is a blockade?)
(Alex: Be a little
more specific.)
(Kathy: The blockade of Calais.)

OF CALAIS $800: Visit "The Dome", built to launch Nazi V-2 rockets; it's this type of underground structure, buster

OF CALAIS $1000: A column in Calais commemorates the return of this number King Louis after the fall of Napoleon
(Jonathan: What is the XVII?)

SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Rachel: $8,600
Jonathan: $3,600
Kathy: $2,000

SCORES ENTERING FINAL JEOPARDY!
Rachel: $9,000
Jonathan: $7,200
Kathy: $400

FINAL JEOPARDY! CATEGORY
SPORTING EVENTS

VENUSIAN MONOLOGUES/MARTIAN CHRONICLES
Four-fifths (exactly) for first place. Shore's Conjecture.
Rachel: Wager $5,400, but no more than that: you cannot afford to lose by $1 to a likely wager of $3,600 on the part of Jonathan. If you're a fan of shoretegic wagering, you might risk $4,601.
Jonathan: Your score is exactly 4/5ths of Rachel's score, so wager $3,600. If Rachel wagers properly, you'll tie each other should you both get Final wrong, and if Rachel makes the mistake of overwagering, you'll win the stumper.
Kathy: Too bad for you, Kathy, your score is less than Rachel's score minus Jonathan's score. Unless they both commit an egregious wagering error, you've no hope of moving into first place. Wager as much as you desire, but remember, you'll have better chances of advancing to second place if you have a larger sum left over on a Triple Stumper.

FINAL JEOPARDY! CLUE
An old name for this Olympic sporting event is the quinquertium

FINAL SCORES
Kathy: $400 + $398 = $798 (What is the pentathalon?) (3rd place: $1,000)
Jonathan: $7,200 + $5,001 = $12,201 (What is Pentathlon?) (New champion: $12,201)
Rachel: $9,000 - $5,401 = $3,599 (What is the decathalon) (2nd place: $2,000)

Total Potential Lach Trash: $18,400

GAME DYNAMICS

CORYAT SCORES
Rachel: $7,400, 14 R (including 1 DD), 3 W
Jonathan: $5,600, 20 R (including 2 DDs), 9 W

Combined Coryat: $13,400

BATTING AVERAGES
Jonathan: 21/60 = .350
Rachel: 14/59 = .237
Kathy: 10/58 = .172
Team: 45/63 = .714

MISCELLANEOUS INTERESTING CLUES
DOUBLE DOUBLE LETTERS $400: In the 19th century Thomas Palmer told us what to do "if at first you don't" do this
(Alex: Right, with a minute to go.)

THE BURGERS $200: The Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese
(Rachel: What is a Big Mac?)

during the introductions, my local station broke in for a weather update to let us know it was raining somewhere. (I'm serious). I was angry and cursing my weatherman, but he was done and we returned to the show while Alex was still doing his opening remarks.

After seeing the show, I wish I had missed it completely.

FJ was an instaget. I spelled it the same way the chicken raising lady did. I don't know if they were just being nice since it wouldn't have mattered either way, but I'm counting it as a get.

Alex should have explained the Burgers category before they began.

What an awful game. Three contestants who don't even qualify as mediocre. The only reason there was even a winner is because, according to the rules, someone has to win. Kind of like when the Houston Astros play the KC Royals. The biggest surprise of the game is that the third contestant (whose bailiwick was guessing blindly at high dollar clues) didn't finish in the negative. Look for that champ to lose tomorrow.
I'd rather cuddle then have sex. If you're into grammar, you'll understand.

Sienna is a name?!? That completely threw me. I saw "burnt" and "raw" and thought "amber", which is a name. But the color is "umber" so that doesn't count. I was so rattled that I didn't get the easy "lance" clue under it.

Tech should've been 5/5, but I clammed on "sonar" and couldn't come up with "methane" in time.

Dover Strait seemed undervalued at $200.

That BMS on Calais for $800 shows why I don't like BMSes on a word that's kinda sorta synonymous.

"Buster" seemed like a very opaque TOM for "bunker".

Sonic kept me from a run in Burgers. Only eaten at one twice. They love mocking me with the fast food categories. First Del Taco, now this.

====

DJ! totally ate my lunch with only 5 right. Contestants seemed to completely come unraveled near the end.

====

Quin. Quint. Five. Five… what has five. Five. Pentathlon!

At least the guy who DIDN'T ADD AN EXTRA SYLLABLE won the game.

Do you even have rules any more, Jeopardy?

Just a dreadful game. Some weird whiffs - what happened with siege? - during the J round but they finished it, at least. Then comes DJ, and the champ just disappears. The guy in the middle is totally on tilt and pretty much rings in on everything, but since he's wrong half the time he basically gains no substantial ground. I think the lady at the end mostly negged, too. Then, you've got a question like the Oregon one, where people get to think about it, and still can't come up with "ego." Ouch.

Also, the show cited World Book for a DD. Is that around any more?

Really a missed opportunity to note that it was "that coward Robert Ford" (NOT WYATT EARP STOP BUZZING IN MIDDLE GUY) who killed Jesse James. Also, a whole category of question phrases, and no one took advantage of the chance to simply state the answer, without the usual phrasing.

I am sure there will be a *riot* over accepting that lady's spelling of penthathalalalon. How could they set such precedent, and for someone who had no chance of winning? I am actually really unhappy she lost because tomorrow the guy playing on tilt will be back, buzzing in with Henry VIII for any question asking about an English king, Babe Ruth when asked about a baseball player, etc, etc.

I thought FJ was pretty easy, but then I've never been on the show, and the person who won yesterday thought it was decathlon, so maybe it was crazy tough!

I mean, what the hell did I just watch. PBolivia!!? Charge of the Light Brigade by DYLAN THOMAS!??! I was rooting against him after that one, but whatever. The one day champ carousel is in high gear.

Like TenPoundy, Sonic kept me from having a run in The Burgers. Had it mixed up with Arby's.

It took every second afforded by the neg and the silence to pull out ego. Not sure why, but I'll give them a pass for that one. And I'm 90% sure that Alex did call him a coward.

I'm not sure how they completed that first round. LTaM warning sounds with a full category(?) left, everyone seems to go out of their way to stutter and pause, and they finish anyway?

I'm also not a fan of going for the 1600 clue when you're down 1800 and running out of time, but he probably would've missed it anyway.

Had never heard of. Thought they were going for the two words sounding vaguely familiar.

I missed $400 in that State category because I came up with "Ask", but it's not a state, so what do they want? By $800, I got it. Couldn't pull out Diana since I'd never heard of one in association with the moon, but got the other three.

I got FJ without much trouble, but I will admit that I had a little sliver of hesitation, where some small part of me wondered "Does that long word actually parse as 'five plus something' or 'five times something'?" For example, does "quin" mean five and "que" means something else? (Remember, for example, "dodecahedron".)

But "quinque" resembles "cinq" and "cinque" enough that I thought, "Yeah, I'm probably overcomplicating things; it probably simply means five."

My shout-at-the-TV moment happened when nobody could name Garfield as the president who was elected in 1880. That may seem a little fussy of me, but I think dates of presidents are pretty important for Jeopardy contestants. It's OK not to be always first on the buzzer with those, but they had time to think about it.
