Alex: Thank you, Johnny. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen. And welcome to all of you. We started the week on a high note. Our first champion this week won $33,300. CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: I have a bit of information on this card in front of me that makes me wonder about the first player we introduced on the show today, Lauren Hopkins Karcz, from Atlanta, Georgia. It says here you met your husband on a street corner?

Lauren: It's true. He was a blind date on my 21st birthday, and when we met, it was actually before we got to the bar that we were meeting at. So my husband, Adam, he said, "Oh, it's you. It's your birthday. Here's a birthday card." And he handed it to me
and said, "Happy birthday from the guy you just met."

Alex: Hey, that's great.

Lauren: I still have it.

Alex: Hey, that's a wonderful move right off the bat.

Lauren: That's right.

Alex: The man's on his toes. Good. You're still together.

Alex: Greg Draves is an MBA student from New York who spent some time in China working on what kind of film?

Greg: I worked on a documentary on tea farming. I was part of
one of the first western crews to film at a state-owned tea farm in China, and I went to a lot of the rural areas that most American tourists never see.

Alex: Well, why China? Because they grow tea throughout the far east.

Greg: Yeah, but the sponsor of the documentary, the producers, were a tea shop in Berkeley, California, that specialized in Chinese tea, especially green tea.

Alex: I see. Okay. And green tea's good for you.

Alex: Jonathan Van Balen is from Lexington, Kentucky. He did a three-month internship in South America. Where?

Jonathan: Yes, Alex. I was fortunate enough, the summer between my second and third year of law school, to do an internship in Santiago, Chile, for almost three months.

Alex: And you're fluent in Spanish?

Jonathan: Yes, thanks to my mother and grandmother, I am.

Alex: And what kind of work were you doing there?

Jonathan: At the time, the Commonwealth of Kentucky had a trade office located in Santiago, and I did work for that office
and I also did kind of like some part-time stuff for a local law firm.

Alex: Okay.

JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Jonathan found the Daily Double on the 20th clue. Jonathan had $6,800, Greg had $1,200, and Lauren was at $3,000. Jonathan wagered $1,200.

BODY QUOTES $1000: This 1897 work includes the line "a great nose indicates a great man"
(Jonathan: What is The Wizard of Oz?)

SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Jonathan: $7,200
Lauren: $4,800
Greg: $3,200

Wish Alex had not mentioned it because was most curious to see how many were going to scream "Cracker Jack neg bait" on FJ when it's not alliterative. But of course it's a better answer than nothing.

Glanced at the question of the day.

Wouldn't have gotten that in a million year, having no idea what a bo'sun whistle was.

I had never heard of a bo'sun whistle. Apparently its a shortened form of boatswain. I had Frosted Flakes.

It'll be interesting to see if Jonathan adjusts his playing style. He knows stuff, didn't really get any gaping knowledge holes exposed, isn't afraid to go in, and really appeared to get the buzzer timing down during DJ last night. (That last one could really help him, even if he runs into an opponent with a better knowledge base to work with.)

But the discretion just was not there at all. He got a second game because neither of his foes were unable to take advantage of his misses and the defending champ whiffed on what should've been a gimme FJ. I imagine adjusting on the fly like would have to be tough assuming it was, as it usually is, taped the same day.

Better game than yesterday. Not a fan of how Jeopardy! uses the word "alliteration." I got Final, but I would not refer to Cap'n Crunch as alliterative.

Bombed the George Washington category. Only one I knew was Mount Vernon at $1000, but couldn't get Valley Forge out of my head in time.

McAfee was my only miss in NYSE. I've never used antivirus or firewall products, nor had a reason to.

3/5 in Body Quotes. Clammed on Cyrano out of uncertainty, and said wash feet instead of hands.

Ben was my only miss in Rats & Mice. I knew about the MJ song, but was flustered because the previous four had all been animated. Still no love for my favorite Kelsey Grammer-voiced animated character? :D

Cheever was my only miss in "Chee".

====

Ran "Gr"8, but I don't think I'd have gotten "gravitas" if not for the rebound after "gravity".

I think Bodies of Water for $400 is the fastest I've ever gotten a clue.

African American Authors for $400 seemed undervalued, and I'm not saying that just because I went 0/5 there.

3/5 in Pop. Never heard of either song at $1200, clammed on $2000.

====

Alliterative product that you find a prize in. Cracker Jack? No. Some kind of cereal? Maybe, but what cereal is alliterative? …Frosted Flakes. Sounds good. Cue the "oh, @#!$*&" when the champ's screen came up.

I don't get it. Americana has long been a favorite topic of mine, and I could provide lots of info on many given Americana subjects. But every time it comes up in FJ!, it totally bites me on the ass.

====

There was a point near the end of the credits where the jib camera seemed really wobbly. Odd.

Glad I'm not the only one.

I swear it felt like time slowed down while Jimmy was reading that first science clue, then sped up when he finally got to the point. b--l--a--b--l-a--wtf-does-this-football-graphic-have-to-do-with-science-b--l--a......lawofmotion I almost didn't snap out of it in time to say Newton

I did exactly what the defending champ did, and I'm sure I wasn't alone. I wrote down "Cracker Jack" at first, but thought it was wrong for two reasons: (1) it's older than 1963, and (2) it's not "alliterative" in the strictest sense. I felt mildly panicky for a few seconds, but tried to think: sailors... nautical... Captain... got it.

The Cap'n Crunch whistle was actually pretty famous in some circles. Nerds of the day learned that it emitted a tone of exactly 2600 Hz. Just the tone that AT&T used in itsa long distance routing. Et voila- free long distance.

Yeah, as billy mentioned, that whistle was used for phreaking.

I got Cap'n Crunch. I wonder whether they would have accepted Captain Crunch. Judges?

I can't reproduce the clue word-for-word, but there was a video clue to which the correct response was barnstorming. I said wingwalking because that's what they were doing in the video. Judges?

Aww, I was gonna say that, but you beat me to it.

And how is Cap'n Crunch not alliterative? Both words start with the same sound, [k].

Prize + sailor = Cracker Jack. But wait, not alliterative. (I misread the clue as saying whistles were a prize in 1963, so knowing Cracker Jack was older wouldn't have helped.) Hmm. Cap'n Crunch?

For the majority-minority DD, I flipped between that and minority-majority, which I settled on. Wikipedia lists both in the introduction to its article, so I'm counting it.

Groaned when the pop music category came up, but ran it, so it wasn't too bad.
Oh, what has science wrought? I sought only to turn a man into a metal-encased juggernaut of destruction powered by the unknown properties of a mysterious living crystal. How could this have all gone wrong?

Oh yeah, 17 and 14 right is what I call a great day. Surprised that was so, since I feel like pound sign, question mark, star, exclamation point right now. You'd think by now, my body would learn that sleeping for 14 hours straight is not normal.

(In before "Still no love for my favorite Kelsey Grammer-voiced animated character?" "I thought you didn't watch The Simpsons!")

I was able to avoid that trap for that reason. Cap'n Crunch didn't come to mind, unfortunately.

4/5 Mice, though Tom & Jerry took a few seconds of thinking. (NHO Ben.)

Suffixed "over Texas" after Six Flags  Probably what I get for growing up there.
