Bay of Pigs was right after JFK took office, I think in April 1961.
I didn't get why Alex was close to accepting Bay of Pigs as correct.

10 seconds is plenty of time. Especially since you'd already written down "The Adventures of", right? Even better would be to write that, then write "Tom Sawyer" and "Huckleberry Finn". Remember to cross one of them out before the music stops.NoName84 wrote:Took me about 20 seconds to decide on the correct one...now could I have written it down in time?

Nor do I. It precipitated the Crisis, but as you said, it was in 1961, not 1962 as the clue required.Bamaman wrote:I didn't get why Alex was close to accepting Bay of Pigs as correct.

"Life on the Mississippi" if you didn't realize it's not a novel. It's more viable than Tom Sawyer if you know even a little about the plot of Tom Sawyer.econgator wrote:Likely not necessary. If you got it wrong, that's almost certainly the one you picked. Are there even any other viable choices?NYCScribbler wrote:Picked the wrong one in FJ!, which I vote for as the poll question.

During the first commercial break, I was wondering if Father Bill had taken a vow of silence.Golf wrote:Bill upon finding the late DD: "This isn't my category so I'm going to make a wager with zero upside that could lock me out going into FJ!" In the end it did not matter, I did find myself rooting for him throughout the game.
Sad that the current president of South Africa was a TS.
I predict many rebounds from boardies in this game.
On the DD, if you aren't going to take a chance and bet big, a $500 bet would have been the way to go. And why was jawbone negged? Did the clue demand the medical name?

The clue demanded a word that came from the Latin for "to chew".Bamaman wrote:On the DD, if you aren't going to take a chance and bet big, a $500 bet would have been the way to go. And why was jawbone negged? Did the clue demand the medical name?

While I am not surprised that nobody got the Canadian $20 bill clue, I am a little surprised they didn't use a current bill. When the picture first went up on the screen (before they zoomed out to show the whole thing), I exclaimed "Look! It's an old Canadian 20!"

Last line in the book: "But I reckon I got to light out for the territory ahead of the rest, because Aunt Sally she’s going to adopt me and sivilize me, and I can’t stand it. I been there before."

I almost didn't answer Canada. I was just in Montreal yesterday and thought, "Wait, that's not what the $20's I had looked like."bpmod wrote:While I am not surprised that nobody got the Canadian $20 bill clue, I am a little surprised they didn't use a current bill. Wow, this was the first episode I've caught in a few days and I have to say that the current champ did not impress. Too many negs from him and too much money left on those boards. Maybe I'm getting bitter as I vainly await The Call, but I was nearly screaming at the TV several times during this game. And only one person got FJ correct?

DH and I at FJ:
Both of us instaget: "Huck Finn!"
ME: Wait, no, Huck Finn started in Hannibal, MO, so that's the neg bait.
DH: Yeah, I remember that too. Twain's hometown. But what else could it be?
Both of us: Hmm...
(5 seconds of silence)
ME: "Showboat! Wasn't that originally a novel?"
DH: *shrugs*
Approximately 2 minutes later:
Both: *fill out membership applications for the Society of Overthinkers who haven't actually read Twain since the Elder Bush Administration*

I usually fail to pick up on visual cues at all, but I saw "vignt" and "twenty", and figured Canada right away.econgator wrote:I almost didn't answer Canada. I was just in Montreal yesterday and thought, "Wait, that's not what the $20's I had looked like."

Unfortunately, I don't know if I can count a get tonight, as I most certainly would have answered Tom Sawyer if my mom hadn't called me and said "I thought it was Tom Sawyer" before I had a chance to watch the show.
So, it was a coin toss between Huck Finn & Showboat that landed correctly.

I, too, had forgotten that Hannibal is fictionalized as St. Petersburg, so I was a little stuck for the first 15 seconds. But with a journey down the river, what else could it be? Showboat is from the 20th C. Life on the Mississippi is not a novel. So I had just enough time to write down Huckleberry Finn, which if it's good enough for Hemingway, should be good enough for Jeopardy!OKlibrarian wrote:DH and I at FJ:

One of many disappointing triple stumpers not yet mentioned - Goethe. I mean, who else could that have been - Heinrich von Kleist??
