CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: Leigh Wishner, the young lady from the Bronx in New York, had brain surgery a couple of years ago, but brain surgery with a condition that you imposed. What was it, Leigh?

Leigh: Yes, I absolutely wouldn't let my neurosurgeon go in there without having him assure me that I'd be able to do well or at least get on Jeopardy! in the future. [Chuckles]

Alex: And he gave you that assurance?

Leigh: He did, and he did a good job, 'cause here I am, so...

Alex: So you're healthy? Everything's good?

Leigh: Everything's fine, yes.

Alex: All right, terrific.

Alex: Let's move to Katie Proctor now. Katie, your face lit up when that Disneyland songs category came up, and I can't see it, but I'm informed that you're wearing Mickey Mouse...

Katie: I-I have Mickey Mouse earrings, yes.

Alex: Earrings? You're a big Disneyland fan?

Katie: Uh, uh, well, Disney World. Uh, Disneyland is on the wrong coast for me. But I actually completed the Disney World Marathon uh, this past January.

Alex: Which is what?

Katie: Uh, 26.2 miles through all 4 parks.

Alex: Wow! Good for you.

Katie: Yes. Thank you.

Alex: Joon Pahk... quit his job--his summer job--in college, in order to do what?

Joon: To play a video game full-time.

Alex: Was there money involved in playing?

Joon: No, it was just a really good game. It was, uh...

Alex: Oh, wait a minute. One game?

Joon: One--it was--

Alex: You spent the whole summer playing one game?

Joon: It's a tough game--um, Zelda: Ocarina of Time on Nintendo 64--the best video game ever still.

Alex: Of course. I know it well.

[Laughter]

(After the Jeopardy! Round, Dr. Oz delivers a Footnote about the Let's Move! initiative.)
The Let's Move! initiative is aimed at reversing some of the scarier recent trends in diet and exercise. Being driven everywhere and eating three to six snacks a day are developments that fed off each other. As the First Lady says, let's eat better so we have the energy we need to play.

FINAL JEOPARDY! CATEGORY
ART & STATE CAPITALS

VENUSIAN MONOLOGUES/MARTIAN CHRONICLES
Three-quarters (exactly) for first place.
Katie: Wager $8,800. If Joon bets to tie your $0 bet with a wager of $4,400, Joon would fall to $8,800 on a miss, and would beat you out by a dollar if you were to bet to cover and were also stumped.
Joon: Your optimum wager is $4,400.
Leigh: You do have some slim hope of taking 1st place, and it's most likely to happen in the event that you're the only one to respond correctly to Final. Wager between $3,201 and $5,599.

FINAL JEOPARDY! CLUE
The Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, home to the largest permanent collection of her works, is in this state capital

FINAL SCORES
Leigh: $5,600 + $5,600 = $11,200 (What is Santa Fe?) (3rd place: $1,000)

well, you could switch it up since today's game also has katie.

non-spoilery preview: see if you can guess the correct FJ response from the category alone. i did it on the actual show (though of course i didn't write anything down until the clue came up).

Did you expect anyone but a female to beat Joon? :P

So fascinating how a giant killer always seems to be a woman... there's got to be something behind that. But Joon, what a run... it's not like this is goodbye, since we'll see you in a few weeks in the TOC. And Katie, my fellow North Carolinian... way to go! So proud that a giant killer comes from my home state. :D

Wow. So a 4-time champ with $85,601 will not be in the ToC? Unbelievable. Sara Heard must be pissed. Paul Wampler, too.

So why wasn't just "First century" accepted? They didn't require AD for any of the others.

Instaget FJ, but spent the last 28 seconds hoping she was from New Mexico.

Alex said no matter what happened, Joon would be leaving with more than $200,000. Had he missed FJ, he'd have left with exactly $200,000, not more than.

Congrats on your run, Joon. Retro good luck in the TOC.

Loved the boardie shoutouts in anthems and John (Don't call me Myra) Breckinridge.

Congrats to Katie on becoming the new champion! And congrats to Joon on the 7 wins and the ToC spot!

Des Moines, Iowa, was my precall for the FJ clue. I was thinking that the clue would reference Grant Wood or American Gothic. Santa Fe was still an instant get.

Joon, I loved the story about The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. I remember that I was in 7th grade when the game came out and I had a subscription to Nintendo Power. I got caught up in all the hype and begged my parents to buy it for me. I ended up getting it for Christmas. I turned out to be horrible at the game. I gave up at the Water Temple, and it took me a year just to get there. Super Mario 64, Goldeneye, and Banjo-Kazooie were more my speed.

First of all, congratulations to Katie. You sure did!

Next, what a great run, Joon, and sorry to see it end. I'm sure 2 very big ones will assuage the pain. You were a true pleasure to watch up there. And good (retroactive) luck in the TOC. There must be some tough matches coming up, to be sure.

Those DD bets had me screaming at the TV. Especially since she must have seen how Joon bet! Argh!!! But I am glad to see that I'm not the only to hit a DD on the last clue on a board and have no idea it was still out there.

Instaget FJ, though like the mere mortals among us, I did not get it from the category alone.

Except the giant killer before this one was a man- Amit beat Justin. Congrats, Katie! :)

Sorry Joon lost, of course. Brilliant run and I'm wicked excited to see you in the ToC this year.

Bamaman wrote:So why wasn't just "First century" accepted? They didn't require AD for any of the others.
Et tu Bamaman? I think you made the same mistake as Joon, not realizing that the answer they were looking for was the First Century B.C. Also, before anyone asks, just as there was no Year Zero, there is also no Century Zero; the 1st Century A.D. was immediately preceded by the 1st Century B.C., at least I think that is the proper way of wording it.
Bamaman wrote: Alex said no matter what happened, Joon would be leaving with more than $200,000. Had he missed FJ, he'd have left with exactly $200,000, not more than.
I at first thought the same thing, but then realized that at the very least Joon would be going home with $200,000 and some Aleve, and that's nearly as good as cash, since just 2 Aleve can relieve pain all day. That's Aleve: 2 pills: all day strong, all day long!

Did anyone else wonder what the proper names were of the Winnie the Pooh and Peter Pan attractions at Disneyland? They are technically known as the Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh and Peter Pan's Flight. I hesitated on both questions, wondering if the intended answer would be the actual name of the attraction, rather than simply the name of the main character featured in the attraction, but I guess I needn't have worried.

Congratulations to Joon on a fantastic run, and looking forward to seeing you back in just 3 weeks time! Also congratulations to Katie on a dominating performance in the DJ! round tonight, and retro good luck to you in the coming shows.

Congratulations to Katie- you really did! And congratulations to Joon on a great run. Chlidhood health was a wheelhouse (doh), 5 for 5, but I had a moment's doubt over Sante Fe vs. Albuquerque. Guessed the right one, though.

Thanks, everyone! It has been a surreal sort of day, which began with unclogging a toilet into which my youngest son had unrolled an entire roll of TP.

As for the Disney category, you can see me hesitate on the Winnie the Pooh response, because I was 99% sure it was The Many Adventures of Winnie-the-Pooh since that's the name in Orlando, but I figured I'd better be safe than sorry.

I was also tremendously lucky that Leigh found all the DDs and bet small, or I'd have had a much harder time. Joon got the last 4 responses in the Woods category and made up a LOT of ground. I'm particularly pleased to have gotten the Tolkien response, though, as my daughter is named after a flower in Lord of the Rings.

As for the mistake I alluded to yesterday, in the intro, Trebek said it was the first time Joon had played against two women (I'll refrain from mentioning what went through my mind at the time). But his first game as champ last Tuesday was also against two women: Elaine and Megan.

That Zelda story was way cool. Over the summer, I had a Legend of Zelda marathon; I played Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Windwaker, and Twilight Princess back to back last August. I'd quit my job to play it if I weren't a broke college student.

Anyway, congratulations on your 7 wins Joon! It's probably already been taped, but good luck in the ToC (Congrats to Katie the giant killer, too).

a 4 time champ with $56K didn't make the 1992 TofC, Walter Mayes. I think there was a $60K champ under the old dollar values that didn't make the TofC, no? They might have only won three games, though. It was discussed on the Sony board a while back. Did Katie give away that she would win with her current screenname :)

The first TOC was all five timers, so any four time winners were out of luck that year.
